i have a question regarding battery charging. when i charge my macbook battery while using it, it never seems to say 100% charged. it says 100% charged after i disconect power adapter, but it always stats at 99% and keeps telling me "calculating till full..." is that normal? am i really suppose to let it go like that until it reaches 100% and the magsafe adapter light turns green?

I believe the default response to this is to calibrate your battery. See the apple website for instructions on how. It basically says let your computer battery run almost out, turn off your computer for a few hours, then let it fully charge.

They often get stuck at %98 and %99 for some reason, pretty normal for me.

On my four year old ibook I have the battery replaced 3 times till now.
Don't worry as the clock is always clicking downwards on the laptop battery and of course it's gonna die someday.

from my experience this is pretty normal, all battery's have a predetermined lifespan and that lifespan decreases with use.

My friends, Christmas is near and I feel a miracle has occurred. I calibrated my battery today and low and behold after 32 cycles I'm back up at 100% health again in iStat.

But just to make sure I downloaded coconutBattery as xUKHCx recommended and as the attached screenshot below shows, things are looking pretty good! I've got more battery capacity than I started with.

Now I can go back to using / loving my Macbook Pro rather than worrying about lost health.

It may be early but I say Merry Christmas ! :D

Your screenshot shows that your current battery capacity is 6460 mAh, up from its original 5500 mAh capacity. Seems like you're well over 115% to me. :p Seriously though. Something isn't reporting right; is that really possible? Why didn't I get a super-steroidal battery??

I've only had mine for 4 months not 8 like it says, but when I got my battery it was 100%, and since then everytime i've discharged it which is once a month, it has gone down a percent or two. I think my battery either sucks or i dunno, but I dont think its normal.

My Macbook pro shows:

Current Battery / Max charge: 5848 mAh

Current Capacity: 5848 mAh
Original Capacity: 5500 mAh

100%

Battery Load Cycles: 5 (must have reset, I remember being over 31)
Age 13 months

Yeah I didn't believe it was possible myself until I read about other people on this thread reporting the same thing and until I downloaded coconutBattery.

115% hey? It seems calibrating the battery definitely helps. I also make sure I use it on just battery at least once a day. Still, puts my whole thread into context hey, maybe I should rename it ... :)

What kind of usage causes the battery life to go down, is it:
a) keeping the laptop plugged in with the battery still inside charging when it is full of charge
b) using the laptop with the battery till the end of its power and then recharging it fully
c) using the laptop minimally and then charging it fully multiple times

Thanks.

B. These types of batteries take the biggest hit when being fully cycled....

Mine gets cycled ALL the time...I use it on the battery a lot. I'm at 14 months, 220 cycles, and 78% health. :-/

after upgrading to leopard my battery health has gone from 90% to 40% and the battery life has halved. it even shuts off with about 10% to go which means i only get an hour of battery life! this is crazy the batterys only 8 months old!!!

should i ring applecare to enquire about a replacement? im scared that leopard has boinked my power management and i if a get a replacement battery it will have the same symptoms.

When I got my MacBook and turned it on, it was at 94%...don't complain about 1 little percent.

That's pretty bad. Yourself and the other people who said that they had a low health when they turned it on should have told AppleCare and see what they said about it.

But I'm curious, did your health later go up after use / calibration?

what is Apple's policy for batteries? is it just subjective or do they have set numbers on what warrants a free replacement? (or do they even give free replacements?)

Mine is at 100% after 5 cycles. I've only done 5 cycles after 6 months of daily use. I just keep it plugged in all the time almost. Shazaam.

my iStat says my battery is at 97%, but my coconut battery says its at 99% with only 59 charge cycles on this baby.

hmm which to trust?
