I've got a MBP/MB/MBA and none were ever 100%. Best was the MBP started at 99%. MB at 98%. MBA at 97%. All brand new. My MB at 374 cycles is now 84%. MBP at 421 cycles is 82%. MBA at 38 cycles is 96%.

I've had my iBook G4 since January 2006 and it's been at 99% charge for as long as I can remember. I do think however, that it went from 100% down to 99% fairly quickly after purchasing it.

I've had 174 charge cycles and calibrate my battery every month.

Sounds like my battery is pretty normal. I thought it was up until I read the OP's post, but now I think its healthy again haha.

I just recently had apple replace my battery.

I'm at 97% after just 15 cycles (5372mAh). Awesome. not. Apple's already replaced two batteries for me. Who knows, with a year and a half left with applecare, I might be getting a fourth one.

I'm not putting a lot of faith into this coconut program, after 19 months my battery has 256mah more than it came with? I don't think so, and it's been through a lot more than 5 cycles.

Reading all these posts, I'm wondering if there are advantages to using other software to monitor the battery health of an MBP compared to the health reading you can get with Apple's own "Get More Info"?

Won't they give the same information?

WTF? 98% after 5 cycles?

This is a BRAND NEW Penryn MBP brought from the Apple Store on Tuesday!

I thought the first 5 full cycles is to condition it, that's why it's at 5, what's wrong? Should I calibrate it now?

You mean in System Profiler -> Power? Yep, same info, and when you go to Apple to inquire about a bad battery, that's the method they use.

The battery programs give some convenience (such as doing the percentage capacity for you). Again, Coconut doesn't seem to have been updated for Leopard yet, so it does give some incorrect information for some values.

Thanks for clearing that up for me! I won't look into downloading any of the battery monitoring software then. :)

MBP Unibody 17"

I just got my 17" unibody a few weeks ago and I'm a little unsure about the claimed battery life.

Apple claims up 1000 cycles that means 1000 cycles before its capacity falls to 80% or so. But after only 2 weeks and 26 cycles my capacity has already gone down to 95%. Anything to worry about?

How does your battery compare?

Looks like you're doing close to 2 cycles a day. Maybe you're using the battery too much...? Somewhere there's a fine balance between too much and not enough exercise, and I guess that's what we all want to know.

My battery is pretty new so I don't have enough time with it yet, but it seems to respond better (higher health) when I use it frequently, but not necessarily run it all the way down. Smaller usages - down to 75%, then back up, 50% then back up, 80% then back up, 35% and back up... all actually raised my capacity. When I did a deep cycle, it seemed to drop the capacity at first - so what's best? Probably just use the battery as needed, and keep it topped up. Unplug it fairly regularly for a while at least. Use it randomly and don't be thinking so much about it. When I sleep my MBP at night, I now unplug the charger.

I guess the thing about the batteries is, if you don't use them, you lose them...

indeed....use the crap out of your battery, i do and i have these results
once a day keeps the drain away :D

Seriously, anyone so worked up over battery health needs to get a life. Or find a girlfriend. Or something. Batteries are consumables. They wear out with use (or even from lack of use) and then you need to replace them. Get over it!
