Again restored did wonders. Apple tech at genius bar said my battery was fine and most likely a software issue. That sometimes when a new iOS comes out on certain devices it can be buggy.

The apple tech restored at genius bar and did wonders.

Has anyone did that yet?

Marc

My battery life seems to have considerably gone down as well but for the first time since owning the iPhone 4, my proximity sensor issues seem to have actually gone away. I'm not quite ready to call it 100% fixed yet as it's only been about a day since I got a new exchanged phone from Apple and upgraded it to 4.1 but I probably talked at least 2 hours on it yesterday and not once did it have an issue.

I'm afraid to restore it to fix the battery problem as it may screw up the prox sensor again, not going to risk it. :)

According to the apple tech no worries. Just make sure you back up everything.

Now my battery is so good I can't kill it!

Just wondering, if you back up your iPhone and restore as new, how can you get your app data back (like single player game file).

I backed up my iPhone, restored as new, and synced my apps back from itunes. It didn't give me my data though.

You restore it from back up. Worked like a charm. A friend of mine did it yesterday after my suggestion and can't thank me enough, he said his battery is like 'night and day'.

I dont htink the battery life is any worse. I think its just more accurate. It seems worse but at the end of the day I still manage my typical 6.5-7 hours of usage until it dies. Either way its still 2 more hours than my old iphone.

So if I want to restore as new, there's no way of getting my app data back on iPhone?

So I was the OP with the problem initially.

Did a hard reset last night (power button + home). Charged up my phone to 100% and let it sit all night. only went down 1%. Guess the reset worked for me. Don't know if that will work for everyone else....but just wanted to let everyone know.

Would you guys consdier this excessive battery use?

I fully charged my phone and after 1h7m of Internet use over 3G and 3h8m of standby the battery is at 76%.

That's basically what I've been getting, but on Wifi with 3G off, brightness 40% with no auto, manual data (no fetch or push), location and BT off. It's worse than the 3G battery :(

Battery life is substantially degraded by Co-Pilot GPS software which keeps running in background in IOS 4.??. It is necessary to also close this application in the multitasking tray, after closing the application. Perhaps your excessive battery consumption is something similar.

Doesn't auto brightness help save battery? Thats one of the tips apple gives for better battery.

That seems like what I'm getting currently. Is that usage time mainly for calls, browsing, and light gaming? Apparently, that's pretty bad battery usage compared to what others are getting. I've heard people getting over 4 hours usage and around 24 hours standby, and their battery hasn't even gone below 80%.

Also, this restore business - isn't the whole point to restore from 'new' so you don't have conflicting software files? I don't see how restoring from a previous backup of iOS 4.1 would be any different to upgrading to iOS 4.1 in the first place?

That has also left me confused.

Restoring from a backup will really only get your phone back to how it was when the backup was made.

If the backup has battery issues (almost certain) then it's not worth doing.

Restoring as a new phone is a BIG pain.

Good to hear. After reading your original post (and a few others like it), I was getting a bit nervous about upgrading to 4.1.

Did a full reset + set up as new phone last night. Still suffering from horrible battery life. 93% after 22 minutes 3G surfing and 27 minutes standby. Gonna try the hard reboot tip later at school.

Whats the procedure like? Hard reset and charge it up to 100%?

I remember getting my iPhone 4 and thinking how marvelous the battery life is, then upgrading to 4.1 the next day and wondering what the hell happened. :(

I'm at 75% right now.

1 hr, 15 mins usage.

4 hrs, 28 min standby.

On 3G.

Marc

So I guess mine is pretty normal then?

Forgot to mention that was with brightness at 100% and also did take some HDR photos (about 5) in there as well. BT is set to off.

I think it matters how bright one likes the screen...personally, I was having to set it such that it was fine in the dark, but would be too bright in the light with auto brightness on, so I figured better alternative was to keep it at 40% fixed.

Anyway I restored as a new phone, and I'll report back if that works for me like it did for the other guy.

Yeah, I just charged the phone up to 100%. Then hold down the power and home button until you see the screen go blank and the "restart Apple" logo appear. After this, my battery drain was back to normal.

So are you implying that the tech at the genius bar doesn't know what she's talking about?

She restored my iPhone. Then she said when I get home to restore it NOT as new, but restore from back up.

She ran a diagnosis. Battery was fine. She said most likely a software issue. At times a new iOS can be buggy on certain devices.

When I left Apple store my phone was restored. All I did when I got home was restore it from back up, meaning I had backed up all contacts, apps etc.

What's so confusing about it?

Your confusion is reasonable. What I think is happening here is that a restore from backup is unlikely to literally restore the phone to its previous (exact binary) state.

A backup that allowed a restore to literally go back to the exact state when the backup was made (apart from the iOS version) would be a bit-for-bit core dump of the entire user space and writable iOS pages. I suspect that upgrading iOS and then trying to restore such a "bit perfect" backup taken while running an older version of iOS would break things. All it needs is for Apple to make a subtle change to an API, or for any dynamically linked or static references to change location, and you get a mess.

What I suspect is far more likely is that a restore is more intelligent than a simple bit copy of everything so that when a restore is done all the information is there but certain things are re-initialised (e.g. links to dynamic libraries) which could sort out something that was wrong before.

Genius Bar staff don't know that much.

Plenty of people have been told incorrect things at the Genius Bar.

They don't get that much training.

I'm going to try a restore from backup. I lost 70% overnight and missed several important calls.
