Hope this helps a bit... but I had the original iPhone and a co-worker (IIRC a 3GS), and i lamented that the battery life is not what I had before. He commented that he had similar battery life with his iPhone before updating to to iOS4.

I have only had my iPhone 4 since Monday so today was the first real chance to test the phone in the "wild". So far I have been on 9 1/2 hours standby and and 4 1/2 hours usage. Sure I had fun in testing out the MotionX GPS app on my drive in to work. And for the past couple hours I have been playing some tunes from the iPod app.

Right now I am at 42% battery life. Will end up charging it over night and try tomorrow to use it more like I did my first iPhone and see how it goes. Just not sure how long the iPhone 4 battery will last if I have to charge it every night. :(

Not sure if this will help, but if you have multiple email accounts setup try turning off push and fetch support. That seemed to fix my battery issue. My battery would drain all the way down to 20% in less than 8 hrs on standby.

Upgraded to new iOS

Upgraded, charged the phone to 100% and left it alone for 3 hours, was still at 100%. Then 25 minutes ago I made two phone calls, and now I'm at 95%.

I am obviously not JB anymore. I am going to try what the person said about using multiple accounts. I normally forward my gmail account to my .edu address but recently started my trial of mobileme. I'm going to completely drain it again twice more then charge and see if I notice any changes. If nothing changes, I'll try disabling push notifications for my email

Going to give this a try as I go to bed tonight with my fully charged iPhone 4... Still thinking it is an issue with iOS 4...

Can't begin to thank you enough for this tip BEFORE the most recent update. :) Did my usual browsing, a couple or so short GPS trips using MotionX Drive - and tonight was one of the are times my friends wanted to talk on the phone... :)

Added to that, this was the 1st time I had a brief Facetime chat with my new iPhone 4.... Was way cool IMO :) LOL

While the battery life is not yet up to my original iPhone - with your tip, it makes it workable for us light users.

Just need to know how this usage might weigh; when compared to my 3 year old iPhone that gives me 3 days usage between charges at least....

Don't forget this whole drain and recharge is just for the battery meter itself and does nothing for the battery. If anything, the batteries like to be charged as often as possible to maintain healthy battery life. Less charge cycles equals healthier battery.

Understand that all too well in my job in dealing with digital camera batteries... Nikon seems to have done well at giving us an indication of "actual" battery life it seems over time... they tell us when the battery is near the end of its life...

Finished some serious testing and here are the results (hint: not good)

I restored to 4.0.1 on Wed then drained and completely recharged that night. On Thu I was able to get 5h 58m of usage and 8h 20m of standby before I got the 10% remaining warning. It was mostly 3G browsing, 1 Yahoo push email account, and all radios enabled.
On Fri I jailbroke and noticed no significant difference in usage or standby time.
On Sat I installed 3G Unrestrictor and immediately noticed the decreased battery life during usage and standby. I didn't log the time since I was out running errands all day. But overnight usage was 8% in 10 hours attached to a wi-fi network with no phone calls.
On Sun it got worse. I installed SBsettings to turn off 3G Unrestrictor and 43m of 3G browsing used 16% of the battery! I tried downgrading to mobilesubstrate 3226 but the install failed with an error that I was trying to overwrite lib... and I ended up in a loop where tapping "okay" just brought back the same message and the operation never completed nor timed out. Then I couldn't get back to SBsettings because Activator disappeared from the Settings menu.
Right now I am restoring from my jailbroken backup from Thu that has zero Cydia apps installed. I'm bummed that 3G Unrestrictor turned out to be the problem or at least a major part of the problem. I had no issue with it over the past several months and I don't really won't to install Rock for the pleasure of paying for my3g when I've already paid for 3G Unrestrictor.

I'm running ultrasn0w on a 3GS (4.0.1), no Cydia apps, a little pushing and all radios on, and I've gotten about 6 hours of usage through a day. I'm also inherently running the latest mobilesubstrate. Since you're not unlocked, I'd continue to believe that there's a minor leak with the jailbreak itself.

Iphone battery drain..last 3hr 12mins with 10% remianing

mine got used up 90% with in 3 hrs 12 mins
it's the 2nd time its happening after got my iPhone 4. i already took it to apple store and the genius said that the restore didn't happen properly, i even check to c if there was any appps in the background, but there seemed to be none, i think it's probable because the iphone cant grab enough 3g signal it must be draining the battery by trying to search for better signal all the time, i have to prove this theory yet...lets c... but i still think that iPhone 4 has some serious problems, i am still with in the 30 day period of my upgrade, i am going to return it back once i check turning of the 3g and restoring manually, very disappointed with apple for the first time.

pb

What's battery like when you turn 3G off or go into Airplane Mode? I attribute a ton of my low battery life to running wifi 24/7.

I think you're definitely onto something. That being said, don't overlook as visit to the Genius after a week unjailbroken.

Hey guys I found that website talking about saving iPhone's battery life https://sites.google.com/site/lesmaclinsenglish/

Much appreciated, but with all due respect; I'm baffled by these posts that basically suggest turning off most of the functions of the smartest phone on the planet to gain battery life.

The question is whether there is a bug, incongruence or error in low battery life, not normal usage like wifi, BlueTooth, etc.

...after being asleep for 5 hours, it was already down 2%...

2%? OH NO!!!

...Then I checked back 3 hours later, and with no use, I was down another 1-2%...

ANOTHER 1-2%? RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!!!

Sorry guys, I just don't see all the stressing over battery numbers. Everyone uses their phones differently so you can't really compare to other people's usage. Just turn off the battery percentage (so you don't obsess over it) and when the battery gets low, plug it in.

Attached are some images of my battery life over the weekend through today...

The 1st one was the first real use of long use of the iPhone 4 and how I use it day to day for internet type. things. I did not set up for a recharge till Saturday night the 15th....

The second one is through yesterday afternoon... with a couple hours of cell phone calls added in...

These two had some great time listening to tunes on the iPod app....

The last one is from my current status since yesterday.... just a short phone call and mostly net usage over the 3G network.

Keeping in mind that I am coming from the 1st iPhone the standby time seems to be way lower than what I am used to - but compared to other smart phones I have used prior to the iPhone 4 in the past week or so.. battery life is pretty nice overall.

The issue is the lack of changeable batteries of course. With the older smart phones I could have a spare to swap out when I needed it. And it gave me the ability to extend the life of two batteries by rotating them. With my original iPhone and it's battery.... it seems to be going strong after 3 years - I never really had to worry...

The one thing I have noticed is that the iPhone 4 battery does charge very quickly on the iPad AC charger. Have not yet tried the iPhone 4 AC charger as of yet. In the end I find myself managing my charge cycles a lot more with this new iPhone than my old iPhone to be sure I don't have to pay for a battery replacement in 1 1/2 to 2 years. :(
