I can't remember the other person who suggested that restoring the iPhone as new is the way to get better battery life, but my question is don't you think it might be just a coincidence? I mean, why would setting up as new give you better battery life? I'm not doubting your conviction, but an explanation as to why this makes it better is needed.

I was another person that did a backup/restore and had bad battery life. I setup the phone as new and no issues. I could not tell you why either. My percentage is also much more accurate than with a backup.

I'm considering doing a full wipe of my 3GS to see if it will help my battery at all, but I have so many text messages, etc. that I'd love to have still. My question is:

after setting up the iPhone as a new phone, does restoring from a backup "undo" the full restore? Meaning, does it defeat the purpose of setting up as a new phone?

If yes, is there any way to restore text messages to the phone?

I am on my 4th!!!!!!! iPhone 3GS. First one raised bevel, very annoying. Second one, battery drain, third one I got was PERFECT. Battery was great clicky home button, flush screen. Everything was great with it, until i had it plugged into my car charger and for some reason, i think my car charger fried it. I was listening to it in the car, and the charging kept cutting out and then one time it just turned off. The apple genius couldn't revive it either. Sucked because it was perfect.

Now I'm on my 4th iPhone and got the 28th week production, clicky home button, flush bezel, but yet again, BATTERY DRAIN. As i keep checking the usage stats, it seems like the usage counter is still going up as I keep the phone locked, with no programs in the foreground. I have no clue what process is running and draining this battery and why if its a software thing that a restore doesn't fix it. I'm baffled. I don't under stand why this is happening. I'm just really pissed off.

Best you take it back and get it your 5th one then :) haha

I'll feel like an idiot going back there again. I don't know if they would even change it out again for this. I'm doing a little test right now. I deleted all my email accounts on the phone, turned off wifi, turned off notifications, turned off bluetooth, kept 3G on and i'm seeing how it goes. So far it seems good now that i turned off all that. So i'm thinking that it's one of those that was draining it. I'm gonna keep those thing off for a little while longer and see how it goes. Then turn on one at a time and see which one is draining. Hopefully i can pinpoint it. If not, hopefully 3.1 fixes this ****. I just don't get how it can vary so much from phone to phone.

Yes to your first question. No to your last question.

At least, that's how it is for me. When you setup a phone as new, it's new. When you do a backup/restore - new or old, that backup overwrites what is already there. Some say it's impossible that setting up a phone as new does anything. Some say it helps.

Restore as NEW.... I am right now at 81% Stand by = 1day 11hours
Usage = 1 hour, 8 minutes

You can choose to follow my advise, or continue suffering with horrible baterry life. another thing, do not drain baterry completely.. 20% is fine and no lower than 15% will give you the best result when attempting to drain for better battery life when you first drain. never completely drain.

Another tip... turn of 3G when not in use.... I use it when speed is needed. (surfing when no WIFI))

IT WORKS! TRUST ME.... I am so happy :) :) :)

I too have witnessed this behavior recently, and am about to do my third restore of the phone. After each restore I get about a month's worth of normal battery life before it starts to degrade. The phone gets very hot and battery life depletes in a matter of two to three hours. Both symptoms are representative of a stuck process, but a hard restart doesn't do anything to solve the problem.

Why does a full restore work? What's going on to cause this behavior?

iPhone 3GS 32gb with OS 3.0.1

I just exchanged my 3GS on Saturday because if bad battery life. I could hardly go a day with 3-4 hours usage and standby for 8 hours.

My new 3GS is sitting at 3.5 hours usage and 1 day standby and 42% left. I'm more than happy with my battery life now.

Wow nice one! Did they replace with new or refurb?

I can say a few things to this..

1 - Restoring from new may or may not fix the problem. It seems some phones it does, some it does not.

2 - Turning off 3G (on your PHONE) is stupid. You bought it as a PHONE. Leave the 3G alone. Unless you're in a crap area or whatever. There is no reason to turn it off.

Battery life is SUBJECTIVE. What works for one person, does not mean it will work for you. It is also based on signal strength and how hard your phone has to work to keep that signal. You have wifi, 3g, push, fetch, etc. It will suck down battery life period. There is a lot going on in that little phone of yours. You should be amazed. :)

I have setup phones as new for battery issues. It seemed to have worked. Then I would get the fluctuating battery meter. I have since restored my phone from a backup and did the update. Battery life is fine. At 50% I am at 1 day standby and 3 hours usage. Push, 3G, Fetch (15m) and all that ON. No weird power saving BS here.

If your phone is burning up and dying in less than 10 hours and most of that is standby - there is a problem. Take it back and exchange it. No amount of conditioning or restoring will fix that. If your battery is draining and in only a few hours and with HEAVY USE - it could be your style of usage or a problem. Test it and see.

I did a restore backup when I purchased mine two weeks ago, as soon as I got home. The restore as NEW, I did on the following day. It also reset the counter, as it was showing my last phone's counter (2G's) life time talk time. This was also bugging the heck out of me.

Once I did the restore as NEW, it improved my baterry life significantly, and continues to get better each day. I am a HAPPY CAMPER!

As of right now, I am at 80%

Usage = 1 hour, 16 minutes
Standby = 1 Day, 14 hours

:D

Please stop misleading people. You need to specify what is on and what is not on. From your previous post, I can guess your 3G is OFF. Yes or no? What else is on and off. Please don't just throw out numbers. They mean nothing unless we know exactly how your phone is setup.

He also needs to describe what kind of signal he gets, and how it changes as he moves around (if it changes). Too many people here ignore the fact that low signal often leads to low battery life.

Yup. Low signal means more juice to get a better signal/keep the signal.

Got my iPhone last Thursday, this morning unhooked my phone from full charge around 7, listened to music through the iPod function for about 50 minutes, did about 30-40 minutes of internet browsing through 3G during the day and received 2 texts.

Occasionally brought the screen up to look at the screen. Fairly light usage I'd have thought. Yet my phone died around 17:20 on the bus home.

Had Wifi and Bluetooth turned off. Hadn't thought to look at the signal bars, will take a note of it tomorrow. Obviously phone fully discharged so have done a 100% recharge this evening. Will see how it goes tomorrow.

Also haven't owned a iPhone before, so it was set up as a new phone without a back up restore.

60% with 2 days and 10 hours standby.... OK leave your 3G on, I turn it on, to surf.... other than that, it's generally off. Yes it's a 3G phone, that doesn't mean that you have to have it on all the time. unless you want to drain your battery then complain.... It's like turning the AC in your house and leaving the doors open ;)

Please try and tell my wife that anytime she wants to use Safari on her iPhone, she needs to go to Settings and turn on 3G. Then, when she's done, she needs to turn it back off. She'd probably smack you. :D

It would be nice if there was some automatic way of turning on 3G when you open up an internet-enabled app (like Safari, Maps, etc), and then turning it off after a couple minutes of non-use. This would probably never happen, though.

Restore as NEW....

And lose all my app data?? My 3gs was restored from a 2G backup (and my replacement 3gs was restored from that) and I do pretty well. 3G, BT, wifi, and location all on, brightness at about 75%, gmail fetching every 30 min and mobileme pushing. I'm at 1:21 usage, 11:57 standby, 67% left. That usage includes some email, some ipod, and a little gaming (stone loops).

Even if I could improve with setting it up as a new phone, I'd lose a LOT of app data - and really, I think this battery life is not bad for the settings I have.

No you won't lose your apps. I've done it, and not lost anything at all. I have gained more than double the battery life. see my previous post with screenshot.
