This is my first phone, is there any way to test if my iPhones battery is normal?
There's no real way except to use it. Basically, the more bars of signal you have, the longer the battery will last (assuming that you're not in airplane mode). Also, the more things you disable, the longer the battery will last (but, what's the point in having an iPhone if you're going to cripple it? ).

A good way to make sure everyone is the same across the board is to try this out and post your results here.

Charge your phone to 100%. Before taking it off the charge, turn Airplane mode ON. Turn auto lock OFF. Turn brightness to 100%. Turn auto brightness OFF.

Unplug the phone from charge and note the time you took it off charge. Let it sit for 1 hour. Then post your results here. Before and after.

Damn my 2G iPhone stays on for days with just wifi on and texting and game. I don't know if I should upgrade to 3.0 after seeing all these battery life.

Standby: 1d, 15h
29% left.
lol, some of us would kill for standby times like that. Where I am, I often have few bars, and so I'm lucky to get 1/3 of what you get:

(Note: the snapshot was taken in an area w/good signal -- the phone spends much of the day in an area where it gets around 1 bar.)

True enough -- I didn't have Bluetooth on though either (forgot to note that). Most of my time was overnight just sitting there using Wifi to get email every hour. I think that only cost me a few % by morning...

No, it's not. This "test" is meaningless.

It's not totally meaningless. You can think of it as a rough measure to see if your battery performs similarly to everyone elses' (and, yes, even then, it's not particularly good, but it's a valid piece of data).

I did this test on the Apple Discussions board, and many of us got to 90% after 1 hour. I'm not sure how much this says, because we even did it for the second hour and it went down to 78%. Results vary; clearly if you're down to 80% after 1 hour, there is a problem.

MBHockey seems to be following you around here.

It might be better to try using the tests that Apple did to establish the times they quote.

I noticed that. Lol. As for the test, I am not worried. I was just curious where my phone stood as far as longevity.

It's not "scientific" by any means, nor is it a true measure of how you use your phone every day. If we went by that, results WILL vary GREATLY. This test just gives a general idea of how the phone does for 1 hour and we know that every phone has the same settings for that 1 hour. If any large deviation from that "average pool of 90% for 1 hour" comes to light, there may be an issue that needs to be addressed.

Again, it's a rough baseline.

your battery life seems pretty good to me!

I did the one hour test and checked it at around 40 minutes and it was around 94%. By mistake I locked it soi didn't finish the test, and I ghave been browsing for 5 minutes with wifi and it's now down to 92%. I'll try and do this test again later. Is this normal battery? Judging from other posts here it seems about right

ok so i did this test for the heck of it and in one hour i went from 100% to 83%
is that a cause for concern? i have everythign turned off, which i normally have it turned of anyways. brightness to 100%

just not sure if its worth the trip to the apple store

any feedback would be appreaciated

I would say it's cause for concern, but you really need to see how your phone works under varying conditions and over a longer period of time before you can really tell if your battery is bad.

WiFi, Location Services and 3G all on. Brightness at 50%. Firmware 3.1b2. Not very impressive battery performance so far.

ive had the phone for about 2-3 weeks. i always have everythign turned off (3G, location, bluetooth, push, notification) everything except wifi

on good days i can get about 4 hours when it hits 10% (this is when i go on safari for 20 minutes, take about 10 minutes of calls, some ipod music (this actually helps increase usage without taking up a lot of battery) play a few games for 30 mins.

on bad days i varies from 1.5 to 2.5 hours. basiclly this is when i use safari for about 40 minutes or so and take 20-30 mins of calls and play some games aswell

I hate exchanging stuff (never had my 3G exchanged) but im not sure if i can live with such battery life. The only thing stopping me is (1) 3.1 and see if it helps and (2) my results are all over the board. 4 hours seems ok to me, but 2 hours is really bad.

maybe when i go to get my griffin reveal, i will book an appt aswell and let them look at it, doesnt hurt. plus it really gets hot when im on it for more then 20 minutes, so i can tell them a few things.

thanks for your feedback

Here is my usage..

I am on the fence as to whether or not it's "within specs". I am going to give it a couple more days and see if it improves. My previous phone made it to at least 1 day of stand by time. Everything normal is on. BT is off. Wifi, push, 3G, notice, brightness is 35%, auto bright on, etc etc. Did some wifi and 3G safari surfing, a game for a few minutes, mostly calling.

Started with 94% before bed and went to bed at about 2 am. Woke up at 8:00 and my battery was showing 80%. Quite a drain in 6 hours of just being in standby.

Oh well, few days and we will see how it goes. It does get "warm" during charging and heavy 3G usage. I assume that would be normal.

Here is the best I've gotten
well I couldn't get the picture on so...

Usage: 7 hours, 2 minutes
Standby: 15 hours, 8 minutes

with 5% battery left

And is there a way I could post a picture in here when I am on my iPhone

Considering you show only 1 bar of signal, that's probably within spec. When there is a weaker signal, the phone is going to use more power to try and keep it. It's like that with any cell phone. Talk with a signal like that and expect a good amount of drain. My brother's Palm Pre has 1 bar in his house and after a 2 minute call, that thing gets super hot and the battery drains something like 2% per minute. And on standby, he can only make it through a day or so.

People, if you're going to post numbers like this, please also include, at a minimum:
  1. What kind of signal do you get? How many bars? How does it change as you go about your day? Low bars == less battery life, high bars == better battery life.

  2. Do you have 3G on? 3G is pretty power-hungry, and turning it off will get you better battery life.
Also, some idea of how you used it would also be helpful. People who use wifi a lot will get less battery life than people who don't use wifi much.

Yeah, some of it is from the signal. However, I don't think it's much. When the phone is not touched, I get several bars of strength. So it's got it, I just can't pick it up and expect to hold it :)

I think all is ok. I am now at 20% and have 18 hours stand by and 3.5 of use. I dunno. It does not seem like a lot to me. I am giving it a few days to cycle through and all that to see. I don't want to deal with yet ANOTHER phone exchange. It's getting old.
