my iphone 3GS drains too fast for my taste, but i have 3g/fetch and all the other goodies always on so thats probably why. Yet when im just listening to music it eats up battery more than it should, im confused about what to do

Guys, please don't hesitate and go back and exchange your S iphone NOW!
It's a battery issue / flaw.
I heard from someone who does distribution for Mac, but Apple did not make an anouncement "yet".
I had my 3gs monday, unlocked, all worked fine on US Tmobile and my Belgium carrier.
Overnight i did a full charge, in the morning it was empty??
I did run some test, as i thought it might be an unlock/jailbreak issue, which was not, then by deleting app by app, and waiting to see if there was a "hole" in one of the apps due incompatibility wth 3.0 ...again, nothing.
Meanwhile my iphone went in less then 3 u -50%!
Day after, i went back to the Apple store, and i saw the guy running a diagnostics app i never saw before.
he came back and said, "Nope" i see no issues here but i'll exchange it".
new 3GS, used Wifi up to 4 u...did email, playing games , streaming music for up to 5 u ...and now..3GS nicely runs just over a small 2 days in batt LIFE.
So i guess and i'm pretty sure, its the phone itself!
DON'T FORGET, if you DID do a jailbreak, backup your iphone, do a full restore and then return it, otherwise bye bye garantee.
Hope this helped!

2 bad 3gs iphone batteries, can't even get 3 hours "usage"..

apple already exchanged first one...
2nd one is worse
have brightness at 30%, no games/apps, only check email 10 times a day on push manually, read news apps/ weather ...play 10 minutes of music...and use safari sparingly, maybe email a few pics..
can't even get 3 hours...
they said to do a restore? but this is a brand new phone I didn't upgrade from the prior 3g
any suggestions?
thanks

After my initial calibration, I was getting really good battery life, and I have a screenshot showing the figures below:

Usage - 3hrs 52mins
Stand-by - 2 Days
Battery left - 12%

Everything was fine until I did a restore last week. Now I don't seem to be able to get more than a day out of the phone with similar usage to above.

Leaving the phone on overnight seems to give reasonable results of about 1% loss per hour, but running any sort of 3rd party app seems to be killing it.

I woke up this morning and had 60%. I ran Tioti TV to check on a listing...I ran it for literally 1 minute, and the battery dropped by 2%. I locked the phone and then checked it again a few minutes later, as I've seen the battery drop before, then increase again, but it had lost another 1%. That's not right!

I'm guessing it's one of two things:

1. After restoring the battery needs calibrating again...I haven't had time to try this as I'm on callout ATM...I'll be killing it tomorrow.
2. Didn't I read somewhere that the firmware version getting downloaded for a restore was slightly different to the shipped firmware. If so, maybe this version screwed the battery life...or the indicator.

Any thoughts?

Cheers

Hello all,

bought my White 32Gb 3G S a week ago.
it's showing some tiny cracks by the mic/bottom speakers which don't bother me too much...however, battery usage has been far from ideal and much worse than my previous iPhone 3G.
Here is a screenshot...charged the phone overnight, unplugged it at 9 am this morning and this is what it looks like at 3 pm.

WiFi is on, 3G and Bluetooth off.

any opinions? should i give it another week, or is it better to make an appointment and return /exchange it?

Thanks in advance.

not funny, my usage is less than yours, worse only 2 hours, % the same

today only read news apps, weather, checked email 10x, listened to 10 minutes of music, browsed safari for 10 minutes, and phone calls for 20 minutes....
do I have to do a restore as a new phone????
did it work for anyone?
thanks

I'm coming from a 2G so I don't know if this is normal usage. What do you guys think about my battery?

WiFi, push, 3G, notifications, on. Fetch every 30 mins. Texting, a few calls, internet use and no ipod.

Turn off push notifications. If it still does not work , off 3g. check your brightness level too. ;)

Given that you're showing 0-1 bars of signal, I'd say that is not unusual. Mine has acted like that, and the battery life gets better with more bars.

This is about how it is every day. I think that kinda sucks.

I brought my original one to the genius bar and they plugged it in to run some test that told him that I had to charge it "more than normal." They gave me a new one. I now have refused to turn the % on because I think caused me more headaches knowing what it is.

Also, I came from a 2G and I think my expectations were too high. My buds with 3G's say the batt life is fine...

Ya i might have to do that!

This is my first iPhone so I don't know what kind of battery life to expect, but I'm pretty sure this battery is defective. I have everything turned off during the day although I had wifi on for the last 45 minutes. I used it very lightly today. Should I go bring it back to apple or should I wait for 3.0.1?

Usage: 2 hours 11 minutes
Standyby: 12 hours 33 minutes
battery: 65% (now 64%)

everything turned off exept for wifi for like 45
I also have a data block, but that shouldn't matter
had the phone for about a week, discharged it fully maybe 3 times

btw: in the interest of full disclosure -- it actually wasn't that easy. I had to start with the Applecare line where they made me restore, remove apps, etc.. then wait for a few days to see if it was better, then an appt at the genius bar, then a second appt and I got the new phone... It's not the fastest process.

It's really too hard to tell, since you're only at 65%. You did have over 2 hrs. of usage, so perhaps you were on the phone most of that time? A signal issue can drain a battery, depending on where you are. Anyway, what I suggest is that you look over the other extensive threads on battery usage on MR.

Actually I was using that 4500+ fact app, No calls/MSG or anything. 1 hour was without anything on, brightness at 50, and the second hour with wifi, browsing this forum. In just 20 min it went down 10%

Just thought I would throw in my current "usage" stats.

Usage: 4 hours, 15 minutes
Standby: 1 Day, 3 hours

30% battery life left.

I have never had an iPhone before this so I don't know if it's good or not.

Mine right now is at 16% battery

Usage: 3hr 40min
standby: 23 hrs even

I had my brighntess at about 75% and was using it for games and internet alot more then texting and actually zero calls. I just changed my brightness to about 40% once the battery hit under 20% though. I guess this is pretty good battery life right?

wifi off, push off, fetch new data off, bluetooth off.

about how long should streaming radio on the 3Gs last without 3G or Wifi turned on? This is coming from a 2g phone where I finished off with about 30 or so % at the end of the day when listening to streaming radio for 6 hours or so. With the 3Gs (on Edge mind you, so it should last MUCH longer...right?) I got about 4 hours before my battery went under 10%.

I'm so disappointed with the 3Gs and battery life so far its unbelievable how the original phone can outclass a brand new phone after me using its battery for an entire year and a half now, with both having the exact same settings on.

I'll just wade in with my battery stats - which I think are pretty good and certainly no worse that the 2G I just came from. 3G, wifi, location - on. Bluetooth - off. Brightness 25%. Plus it's jailbroken and unlocked.

Been a mix of games, 30 mins GPS, web browsing, mail, ipod etc.. I use it quite a lot (or so my wife tells me)..

Note: The pic that states it's been plugged in before is because my battery went - this is the first screen shot as soon as it booted up.

Anyone else waiting for 3.1 to see if it fixes the battery problems before bringing it in to Apple?

I'm hoping that 3.1 makes things better. I'm guessing they need to tweak the SW for the new wireless chipset...

The problem for me seems to be when I'm spending a lot of time fetching data on 3G. Over the last day I have had pretty good luck (I find it starts by turning off the % indicator for sanity -- the calibration is questionable IMHO).
3G on, Location Services = On, Wi-fi on for part of yesterday and all of today, push w/exchange off. Some iPod time, some surfing time (wifi)
Usage: 4h 25m
Standby: 1d, 15h
Call time (current): 1h, 41m
29% left. This is basically sitting in my home office for the better part of 2 days.

The usage does seem to increase when I don't think I'm using the phone but I'm not sure.
