It took me two days to wear mine down to the point that it shut itself off. It took 6 hours to charge. I'm not complaining. I'll just do it at night.

Hopefully something that a software update can improve in charging efficiency.

Important note!

Be sure to check the Amp rating on the charger too. I had a couple of 10 Watt apple chargers from the past but they are only 1.0 amp. The one that comes with the iPad is 2.1 amp. This is in really small print on the side of the charger and other than that number, they look identical.

Okay, I'm quoting my previous post to make a correction. I checked the old power adapters and they do not list the wattage. It just says iPod charger and lists 5v and 1a output. That would make it a 5 watt adapter.

However, my caution still stands as if you have any of these adapters, they LOOK identical to the 10 watt versions and you could mistakenly use them to charge the iPad as I almost did.

Sorry for the confusion. I've put them in storage now!

I have no idea on why or know for sure, but I can say I tried charging my iPad 2 through an extension cable last year and it was significantly slower.

If I have to charge the 3 more Ill have to find a longer cable so I can more easily use it while charging.

I swapped ends on my charger with the one on my Mac Book Pro (took the cord off the charger) and put it on on the iPad charger, and that fixed me up as far as the length goes.. But I will be looking for a longer cable..

I'm sure this question is a bit premature, but I was wondering if the ipad will charge at all using a cigarette lighter. the reason I ask is because I am on the road a lot and sometimes don't get to an outlet for about 24 hours. Currently I use a first generation iPad and have no issues with this but I thinking of the upgrade but this is a crucial piece of information for me. Later in the week when if you don't forget about this thread can someone post on their experience?

Thanks

I'm sure it will work if it works on your first gen. Only the battery has changed. The power adapter is exactly the same

Yes you can charge via the cigarette lighter... I'm in my car right now and I'm charging my iPad no problem... Just make sure you get a 2amp charger, or it will not charge at all!

Thanks. What brand charger are you using? I just bought a Rocketfish for my phone and in two months it bit the dust?

The new iPad looks great and on monday I get to play with one but a 6 hours battery charge would be a deal breaker for me.

/Mine is down to 8% right now.

Gonna run it down to 1% before I go to bed then charge overnight .... I'll see how long it takes for mine and post.

Yeah I threw that 1% per 30 minutes as a conservative estimate. I checked after that and it was doing something like what you mentioned.

This is all plugged into the wall with the correct adaptor and everything.

I plugged it in for charging 7 hours ago and with about 4 hours of playing around with the ipad at 100% and about an hour with 30-35% is stands at a total of 80% charged.

This is a little more than depressing. Shouldn't affect me most days, but I fear for that one day..

The other thing I don't like is having to sit with that short cord stretched out while it's charging all this time. I'm going to have to get an extension plug just for the iPad.

Has anyone tested how long it takes to charge up from 0%?

I did, but here's how.

Started charging at 1:45pm. Usage non stop with 100% brightness. Battery level 0%.

Approx 3pm, still using it, battery level 12%.
Approx at 5:30-6:00 still at 100% brightness. Battery Level in the 30s% iirc.

Now I turned the screen to 30% brightness, and in another hour or so the battery level went up to 55 odd percent.

So around 7-7:30 I stopped playing with it. And in that hour it went upto 80. I think it finally reached 100% at 10-10:15.

So with mixed usage it took approximately 8:15hrs. I used it to browse the web, install apps and thats about it.

Been taking pictures and surfing the net for 45 minutes now since I took it off the charger, still at 100%. The reason? Screen brightness at 25%.

The charger will not charge more than a percent per 30-45 minutes if you are using it.

This screen is a black hole when it comes to power consumption.

Disclaimer: What I have just described is the first charge cycle, expect there to be some differences in the future cycles.
