Every couple of months. My husband works overseas so sometimes he comes home and sometimes I fly over there. Usually Istanbul but sometimes Dubai. He's a petroleum engineer so the mid-east is where the jobs are. At least the jobs that pay what he makes. #

We have a couple more years before he retires but I suspect we'll be traveling even more then. The flights to Dubai are 26 hours or so flight time with a copule of changes and short layovers ( if I can ge the good flights). Istanbul isn't quite so bad. One stop in the US and one in London.

One good thing is that in a flight you will usually tend to use lower brightness, probably lower than 50% but YMMV. That should help quite a bit.

The other is you could carry a small battery pack which maybe approved for air lines.

my iPad has just come off a charge. from 0% to 100% in 5 hr 20 mins. seems the same charge time as iPad 2

Get a decent sized external battery. There are plenty of them to choose from.

Here is one for $50 that should be able to charge the iPad 3 completely--twice:

I have one. Well, actually I have 2 but my old Yaboo doesn't seem to be able to do the job. But I'm not sure how well or how long it will take to charge. I'm testing now. But if I can charge on the plane, especially while using it it's much easier than carrying a boatload of electronic equipment around. No matter how light each piece is together it comes to a pretty heavy load after about 20 hours of planes and airports. I try to travel light with my carry on stuff. Rolling luggage only makes up for so much.

The one I linked to has a TON of capacity.n Again, it has enough capacity to charge an iPad 3, from 0-100%, TWICE.

Yes, you can have it plugged in while flying. Don't worry about "airplane compatible." If that were enforced you wouldn't be able to take anything with a battery on a plane.

But of course using power from the plane is best. Unless you have my luck and always get the ONE outlet that doesn't work.

Lithium-polymer batteries have an energy density that exceedes TNT. They can be fast charged up to 80% but beyond that they need to trickle charge to prevent getting all splody and such. You're probably looking at 6ish hours to get to 100%.

You are correct .... took me about 6 hours (maybe a few minutes less by the time I saw it) to charge from full drain to 1% to 100% fully charged.

But really I don't think my iPad 1 really charged any faster from what I recall.

May be looking at about an added hour or so above and beyond the old batteries we have been used to charging.

Perfect for me .... this thing showed up yesterday morning and I played with it All Day Friday (keep in mind loading hundreds of apps as well ... not plugged into to PC but from the cloud redownloading) and night and most of Saturday into Saturday night where at the end of the night it finally needed a charge.

Great Battery!!!

And charging seems ok to me.

So far my new iPad's battery lasts at least at long as my iPad 2 (both are 32GB wifi only), if not longer. I received it with an 82% charge. Been using it on and off since Friday at 3PM until this morning at 17%. On this initial factory charge I did a restore from my iPad 2 backup, messed around with photo stream and iPhoto quite a bit, a lot of surfing, some Real Racing 2 HD and other games, browsed the app store, Netflix and cable TV. I am very satisfied with the battery life. It took 4 hours to charge from 17% to 88%, which seems to be inline with the iPad 2.

I have the exposed LED elements on 2/3 of the top edge, but I'll not see it if I'm not looking for it. My screen is beautiful as is the battery performance. This one is a keeper. I do hate having to exchange and return stuff.

Probably helps for charging on the motorcycle! I use a powerbag backpack for charging my phone on my bike.

But also the external battery in that link would charge an iPad 2 twice and almost charge an iPhone. It wouldn't charge an iPad 3 all the way once, which sucks for everyone. The battery in that link was an 11000mAh battery pack. The new iPad has a battery that is actually higher than 11000mAh.

I had a 3000mAh battery in my powerbag. Once I saw the specs for new iPad I bit the bullet on a 90000mAh cartridge for the powerbag. So now if I drain both cartridges (3000+9000=12000) I should have just enough juice to fully charge a new iPad from dead to 100% and throw a little juice into an iPhone or one of my headsets......................in theory, have yet to test the real world yield.

Drained mine completely before giving it a full charge. Not much of an increase in charging times as far as I can see. Charged up to 32% within a couple of hours,

That would be stupid when the iPad will only draw up to 2.1 amps anyway--the exact amount that the existing iPad 10w charger puts out.
Michael

Correct if you are only considering chargeing while the iPad is off or in sleep mode. If your using you iPad while pluged into a charged, some (actually most) of the power is used to power the iPad and little is left to charge the battery (see all the comments on battery percentage droping while using the iPad and chargeing at the same time). Having an 15 or 20 watt charger would be of great benefit. Using one of the dual port chargers with a 'Y' spliter power cable (made to provide power off of two USB ports for some external hard drives), where each port is rated at 2.1 amps or one ports is 2.1 amps and the other is 1 amp should do nicely.

5hrs and 15 min for me from 0%. Acceptable for me.

Approximately the same for me. I fully drained my new iPad last night (first time for a full charge cycle) starting at 74% charge and playing The Lord of the Rings Return of the King extended cut (over 4 hours). I had the following settings:

- no sound (had it running in the background)
- Screen brightness at greater than 90%
- Video set to full screen to maximize battery drain
- LTE on
- Bluetooth on
- Wifi on

It took me over 6 hours to drain the battery to 0. In fact, I had to recycle the movie. I was pretty impressed. The charge time to 100% was ~same as noted above, a little over 5 hours.

One more thing, the back of the unit did get 'a little' warm but only slightly during the video. I checked it multiple times. It was never hot. By the way, I am blown away by the LTE speed (Verizon)! see my speedtest.net results below.

I've just done mine and it's taken 5hrs 57mins to fully charge my 64gb Wifi+4G jobby.

FYI - about the long flight battery usage - something to consider:

iPad battery 42.5W from what I understand.
Voltage of that battery is 3.7V nominal.
So that = 11.48 amp hours.
Assuming 10 hour run time - average power draw from iPad is: 1.15amps. (for that battery capacity)

USB provides 0.5amps of current @ 5V.

So if the plane has a USB plug available, and you run the iPad with USB plugged in, you'll extend the run time by another 7.5 hours at least. So it won't charge it, but will get you further along...

Ah, exactly the type of info I needed. Thanks!

The power to run the iPad comes from the battery whether it is charging or not--this is best illustrated by a fully dead battery that must charge first before the iPad will even turn on. Using the iPad won't change the fact that it won't draw more than 2.1a while charging.

I found that if I use the new iPad while charging, it will charge, but at a very low rate. Practically speaking, my iPad can't be charged while in use. It will maintain the current charge level, but that's about it. It would take hours to boost the charge level by just a few percentage points.

I'm hoping that this may change as the battery calibration is refined. Otherwise, this is a non-trivial reduction in functionality.

wow, i timed mine from 0% to %100 and it was more than 7 hours.

charged from the wall, while leaving it alone.

it's not that big of a deal since I get a days use and charge every night, but still.

Anandtech performed battery tests and they reported that for web browsing (WiFi) battery time decreased by bout half hour (by 1.5 hour on LTE).

I don't know what people are doing with their iPads that are taxing the battery that much. I see no difference whatsoever from my iPad 2. I would go as far to say it is a little more efficient.

Yesterday I had both my iPad 2's and new iPad's batteries drained completely. I plugged them in at the same time and had them charging in airplane mode and without using them while charging. The iPad 2 took just under four hours to charge completely. The new iPad took just barely over or exactly two hours more to reach full charge. So -- that was to be expected.

Currently I'm doing repeated tests to see if they drain at the same rate under difference circumstances. Out of the box, the new iPad drain was significantly more harsh. But after I let the new iPad's battery drain completely and then recharged, it has seemed to equal or usually surpass the iPad 2's in holding a charge. I just want to have a clear picture of how the new battery stands while I still have my iPad 2 around!

I am in the uk so that may explain my quicker charge times, I don't know

I hate exchanging or returning as well, since I will never know what I will get, better or worse, either of which is possible.
