David Blaine == Media Whore
Les Kern == Sweeping Generalizationer

There, I've said it. :cool:
Whoa there, was there any need for that? Whore's a strong word!

I still laugh when i hear about his 40 days in a box above the river Thames. I went down one day to laugh at him and was inspired by the people hitting golf balls at him off roof tops. His card tricks and street magic is the best thing that he ever did. Why can't he give it a rest??

wow, so much hate for Blaine, I never expected this. Honestly I think he's fun, his street magic was better than these stunts, but why shouldn't he be allowed to do these things, Houdini did some pretty crazy things like this, why not have a modern-day heir?

I'd be cool with it if he smiled some more and had more fun with it. Kinda like back in the street magic days.

"The I'm so Fing Serious, Like a Heartattack" thing grates on my nerves.

I'm not so sure. The Brits have a fairly large population of eccentrics who are pretty different.

You know, what I said was NOT fair at all... I was thinking of the STEREOTYPICAL Brit. I LIVED in Walmer and Ramsgate, and let me tell you, there were some damned interesting people there.

To all of the UK, I sincerely apologize.

I don't totally disagree but you can't call him selfish. He bought his current wife a plane for her birthday, and a Ladyshave for her other leg! Boom-boom.

:)
Nah, he's greedy.

Without starting an argument, I can tell you thats not how its done, no wires are involved.

I will not however tell you how its done, magicians code...

That's not true. He does it two ways. In one version, he's just using an old trick where you stand up on the ball of your foot, but if you keep your feet together and have all spectators at a 45 degree angle to your back it looks pretty convincing. You could "levitate" 6 inches this way.

In another version, he does hang by wires, levitating a foot or more. Basically they splice together the clips of him on invisible wires with people oohing and aahing (e.g. Deion Sanders) to the first time when he does it legit. It's just to make the trick look better on TV I suppose, but it's still fake.

He does some other phony stuff too, like the trick where he reaches "through" the window of a jewlery store display and grabs out the person's wedding ring. First time I saw that I was blown away, later on I read about how the whole thing was faked and its all camera tricks and the "spectators" are actually in on it.

In the magic community, few people have much respect for him.

Don't forget the cigarette through the coin part, where he asks people for a coin until he finds one that doesn't have one, so he gets to use one of his own... one that has a hole through it.

Then there is the flash-frozen fly that he thaws out to bring "back to life."

The first trick he mentioned is actually really easy. No one will believe it if they know you, but it works on strangers. You just have to gets the audience within a 45 degree angle to you and practice with it. You don't have to be shaking (as it puts a lot of pressure on your thigh).

The Super Best Friends are going to have to stop the Blainetologists from mimicking this by drowning themselves in the Washington monument reflecting pool.

read about this on the bus yesterday. I commend him on these "achievements", I couldn't do them! But my mate just joked about "do they sprinkle food into the bowl?" i was exceptionally giddy :D

Impressed

... not by the stunt. People were doing this decades ago, sitting in chairs hanging over the edge of buildings and so on. David hasn't invented it, he's just copying it.

The REAL media whore was Houdini himself. The papers would say things like "watery crate splashes down into river with Houdini chained inside" when actually the crate was lowered gently into the water.

To both men, I say... so what? It's their occupation to make spectacles out of nothing and to invite the press to watch. We shouldn't be surprised. We certainly shouldn't be upset about it. So I don't get the anger on this thread.

As far as I'm concerned, what's most impressive about David Blaine is he moved magic away from the big lights, stage and hair of David Copperfield and back onto the street in front of regular people. The people didn't pay admission to see Blaine's tricks back then... ABC did. No way Copperfield is doing this water aquarium stunt when he could just charge $80 per seat to do the illusion in MGM Grand's hotel/casino. THAT'S why I like David Blaine so much.

Agreed. I think the problems Blaine experienced when he tried to wow us in his box stemmed from the fact that we're not generally fans of arrogant people who expect us to be impressed by their pointless antics.
Yet you all love the Queen and Prince Charles.:rolleyes:

ROFL! Take that, Rude Brittania!!!

Sorry, but blaine does do some impressive things and there's no way you can "creatively edit" something while he's in motion.

For the record, his trick with the cigarette through the coin... he DOES take a quarter from the crowd. Whether he switches it out with a quarter with a hole in it is another story.

"Magic" is ALL mis-direction. If you guys are so clever, maybe you should do it. Then you'd be famous too.
