Your internet connection is probably most to blame there. However I find Sky's non HD quality rather poor, and they don't provide HD channels to Now TV customers.

Everything else was working perfectly fine so it wasn't the connection.

But we're moving away from the topic in hand.

Good news that it's coming, but for the ATV to have a true impact, it needs ITV, Channel 4 and Five to play ball as well.

I'm still just amused at the creativity that went into naming the BBC's channels. One. Two. Three. Four. Oy...

(Even though ABC was at one time NBC Blue) ;)

I can't see how there are any particular rights or legal issues involved in putting iPlayer on Apple TV. Given it's already available on every other streaming device and every other Apple device out there.

You ever tried to agree a contract with Apple (other than agreeing to exactly what Apple want you to)?

What contract? The new Apple TV has an open API and App Store just like the iPhone and iPad. Anyone with an Apple Developer account can develop apps for it.

I'm not an expert, but presumably some agreement has to be reached with the two parties.

If rights and legal issues aren't an issue, shouldn't Virgin be carrying Sky Atlantic by now?

As I say, I'm not an expert, but presumably where broadcast intellectual rights are involved, there's a bit more to it.

If it was simply a case of "developing an app" then shouldn't we have HBO Go in the UK by now?

Really?

Apple's two biggest markets are the US and China.

How many people in those two countries are hanging out for ITV?

In those two countries not that many I guess, though I have seen quite a lot of people from America saying they want the iPlayer (I'm assuming they are expats or just like our TV).

In the UK though, having those catch up Apps on Apple TV will make more people contemplate buying one.

BBC already has all the rights, including streaming rights, for all the content on iPlayer. There is nothing magical about the Apple TV that makes it different, legally speaking, from any other streaming device. I don't understand why you think this is complicated. It's not.

There isn't a UK HBO app because Sky has exclusive rights to HBO's content in the UK. We have Now TV instead, which has basically all the HBO content anyway.

Amazon Prime video is one app we probably won't see on Apple TV, given that Amazon have so far refused to release it for Chromecast, and that Amazon have recently stopped selling both Chromecast and Apple TV.

Sadly, you are probably right, but I don't see their logic.

Opening it up on new platforms would encourage more people to use it. It's already on iPhone/iPad etc. But as a result of having an Apple TV, I use Netflix a lot, and Now TV a bit. Amazon, only for 1 show. Maybe I'd ditch Netflix for Amazon if it was available on the ATV. But it isn't, so I'm more likely to ditch Amazon at the next renewal.

The real big problem is that we went from a consolidated market of Satellite/Cable TV, to having a fragmented market of Satellite/Cable TV plus several streaming services. Before, I had "all" the channels. Now if I want to watch Mr Robot or Top Gear I'll need Amazon. If I want to watch The Affair I need Now TV (I have cable so don't get Sky Atlantic). If I want to watch Fear The Walking Dead I need BT. If I want to watch Orange is The New Black I need Netflix. So I need to fork out several monthly subscriptions on top of what I used to pay. Guess that's progress...
