No, we don't HAVE to pay for the BBC. If you never watch live TV and only watch it on catch up, you do not legally have to pay the licence fee.

Im pretty sure that will change, every household will require a TV Licence even for BBC Iplayer catch up. Thats whats going to be proposed in the the charter (due end of 2016). Lots of paperwork online to show that.

A subscription service would be the best thing in my opinion, a la carte bbc content for about £8/m per household, but then why not buy a TV Licence and get it all for £11/m ?

Im sure someone in the corporation is thinking this way, we will just have to wait and see.

Absolutely. Especially if the EU decides to stop content blocking by Country, the iPlayer will have to move to a subscription based service. Other wise every EU country will gain free access to it without having to pay. A subscription service would potentially allow users to use the service anywhere in the world, not just the EU.

Hopefully All 4 and Amazon Video aren't far behind..

I tweeted All4 and they said they had no plans currently. I can't see why though, they already have an iOS app.

We just need content rights worked out so we can watch The Simpsons on All4 and Family Guy on iPlayer.

When they do I'll get an Apple TV!

4OD and iPlayer perform horribly on PS3 and PS4!

4OD (which has been called All4 for a long time now) isn't on the PS4.

As for iPlayer, go ahead and compare the PS4 version to the ATV version. The difference in features of the former to the latter are considerable I hope you enjoy searching for what to what every time you use the ATV version, as the BBC didn't bother to include favourites in it, nor is there Siri voice search.

Apple are now featuring this on the Apple UK home page, linking to a dedicated page: http://www.apple.com/uk/tv/entertainment/bbc-iplayer/

Glad they got this launched before BBC3 goes online-only next year.

Of course iPlayer is the most important streaming app in the UK by a country mile, but Apple are featuring an app which is hugely inferior to iPlayer on EVERY other platform. It's super bare bones, a real rush job. Amusing too that given the that the main selling point for the ATV is Siri, that the BBC and Apple couldn't work out some way to make it work in iPlayer, and with no favourites option either (something every other iPlayer app has) it's a chore to use.

Not sure why you find search so difficult? You put in the first letter or two of the programme you want to find and up pops a list. It's simple and fast.

I truly don't understand all the negativity here. We have iPlayer on the new ATV, just enjoy it. I'm sure over time they will update and improve it by adding Siri etc, but I'm very happy with how it is now.

Shouldn't have to search though should I? Every other iPlayer app has a favourites list. The other iOS apps even talk to desktop iPlayer with BBC ID login to sync favourites and playback position.

It's clearly been rushed out, who knows what went on behind the scenes. It's also the only iPlayer app for TVs which doesn't use the standardised iPlayer UI. Maybe it will get better, but the BBC have a history of leaving iPlayer TV apps at v1.0 forever. Take the (far superior) PS4 app for example, no updates in over 2 years.

It's better than nothing of course, but it's the worst iPlayer app anywhere and doesn't use any ATV features at all.

There is talk of banning Geo-Blocking in the European Parliament at the moment. I hope it comes through and we can all start treating the internet like the open place it should be. At least here in the EU anyway.
This won't be covered as everything the BBC requires a license for you to view - it will be covered under a different law

I'm Irish and we have a dominant state broadcaster here too RTE. I am familiar with this licensing and the government ownership.

Favourites work if you can log in, I dont think thats a function of ATV yet.

iPlayer and Netflix are virtually unusable on my Blu-Ray player and Tivo. The iPlayer app on the Apple TV is much, much, better in that regard - as is Netflix.
While I have not tried iPlayer, the few Netflix apps I have used on blurays have been horrible.

After saying that I think that it was easier to find films and programmes on the old Netflix app on the ATV3.

I also agree with you here. The Netflix app on the ATV4 looks better, but that is the only thing that is better when compared to the ATV3.

Trying to browse for movies, tv shows, and genres is not user friendly on the ATV4. I have been browsing stuff on the better organized ATV3 Netflix app, and once I find what I want to watch, I switch to a different TV that my ATV4 is on.

I with I could get Alto's Adventure on the ATV3, then I could just disconnect my ATV4 until it got better.

No reason this couldn't be rolled out to all the hockey puck Apple TVs except apples insistence on forced obsolesce. Guess i will stick with my 120gb SSD G1 apple TV which is currently running PLEX and has 1080p thanks to hardware decoder replacing the wifi card.

Will never buy apple again until they stop this practice of making all goods "disposable by update"

I really like my ATV1, but I accidentally left some DVD cases on the top of it, which get insanely hot, and I think I messed up my graphics chip on it.

I haven't used it in a while, but didn't it always have 1080p??

I think once Apple makes the ATV Siri APIs public then we'll see it added to iPlayer along with numerous other 3rd party apps - we just need to hope that Apple provides the infrastructure it promises with app-wide program searching from the main ATV screen, so I can say "Watch The Living Planet" and Siri/ATV will be smart enough to work out which app's able to show it. I guess apps will need to provide some sort of schedule that's searchable to ATV.

Once All4 gets an app I will probably never watch terrestrial TV again using Freeview etc - it's great you can run Hulu and HBO alongside iPlayer.

Doubtful. Im sure the BBC were developing before "that guy" made his Auntie App. The BBC Online Development Teams, App Teams and producers all do a lot - this was just one of the apps.
Besides, it's out now, stop bickering.
Well considering the guy did it in a few days and the BBC said they don't have any plans and then right after that guy showed his app they said they would make one—well it's just hard to believe it happened the other way. Development time is pretty low for these more simple TV apps—especially if the back end is already put together. As for bickering, I'm American and can't watch it, so I must still complain! Haha. Why won't they sell us subscription plans? My humour is usually on the dry side, so British comedy often works for me.

Great to see the iPlayer on the ATV, shame they didn't include the ability to log in using your BBC ID, so no favoutites.

Need to buy another ATV for the bedroom now, for iPlayer & infuse.

HBO Nordic is available on the UK App Store but you'll need a Scandanavian VPN to use it. The app is on the UK ATV App Store as well but It's easier to use the IOS app and AirPlay to the ATV. It's the same content and in English.

Cheers I'll take a look. Got an iPhone and an app to stream to my Fire TV so all may not be lost haha.
I do feel in the UK we are getting the shoulder on streaming services?

We are yes, but there are often ways around these things ;) Their website BTW is in Danish or some Scandanavian language, but you can change it to English down at the bottom of the page. You get a free month trial and I had no problem signing up with my non Scandanavian debit card and they didn't ask for an address. Your bank may add a small charge each month though because it'll be charged in Krone. There's no contract, it's a simple month by month thing.
