It works really well.
Both with my home wifi and at a Coffee Republic using the Cloud…
Pity only one program so far.

Great start BBC! :D

Edit:
As reported, no luck with Edge though.

Does the radio also work?!?

No, just the podcast directory that's been available for a while.

There is some new stuff coming in April for iPlayer radio, including other formats I believe, so it might have something the iPhone can play then. Apparently there's also some new interface stuff coming for the iPlayer in general about the same time, so maybe the iPhone interface will get a bit slicker then, though as I understand it the current interface for the podcasts was done by a developer as part of his "10% time" rather than a formal BBC project, so it might not come straight away.

If the BBC and Apple could get something worked out for Fairplay we might even see all the BBC's radio output being "podcasted" with the 7 day timeout DRM, but with music left intact. Build a nice RSS feed around that and it'd be completely awesome.

I wonder what they are using to tell if your iPhone is in the UK? I'm from the US but in the UK with a WiFi connection via BT DSL, and the iPlayer will play no content. Keeps staying "its not available".

Most of the time- the application checks to see if you have an UK IP address but in this case, its seems they are doing more. Can the app be checking the ESN on my phone to see if its a UK phone?

Interesting!

That just means that programme isn't on iPlayer yet - I don't think they'll be going back and uploading old programmes, so all that's on there are some programmes from yesterday and today.

The only checking that's done is the Geo-IP, and I'm pretty sure it'll actually say "sorry, you're outside the UK" if it doesn't think you are.

Do subtitles / closed captions work on any of the new BBC streamed iPlayer content?

Have to say that I just had a look at this-and what a great job the beeb has done!
The encoding makes the video look superb on the iPhone.:D

and the best thing... BUFFERING!

where i live, and with my ISP, internet in the evening is very slow, and as we all know, iPlayer (on mac) can't buffer, so i have to watch any programs after 11pm when internet is fast again...

...with iPlayer for iphone, i can start a program, pause it, then wait for a little while...

is there any way to watch H.264 on my Mac?

Yep, looks like they just check your IP to make sure you are in the UK. Kinda sucks, I was hoping to check out some BBC shows. I guess I'll just have to watch as many as I can when I'm in London this spring...

Sorry to resurrect the thread, but:I have found that the iPhone keeps dropping the WiFi connection after thirty minutes, on the spot, every time I am watching iPlayer content. This obviously brings the content to a standstill very quickly! I don't think it is a WiFi issue as other devices remain online downloading and uploading throughout this period.

I imagine there is some kind of sleep function, but the iPhone itself does not go to sleep. Is there a way of disabling it ?
