You should be very worried. My 2011 MBA battery exploded on me, it was on my lap as well when it happened. My wife left me for another man because I couldn't give her a child. Sleep with one eye open with these Apple products, you never know when they go al Qaeda on you.

My late 2008 Unibody MBP's battery swelled on me. I noticed it because the trackpad wouldn't depress as much as it had in the past.

I took it to the Apple store and a day later it was ready to pick up with a new battery at no cost to me. I still plan on buying apple products in the future.

My 2008 MBP's unibody laptop did the same. However I didn't get the free replacement, which I figured I should have been entitled too. I had to pay $100+ for a new one.

Hoping my new MBA doesn't do that.

Had the same issue on my late 2008 Unibody MB Pro. Couldn't figure out why the trackpad wouldn't depress & finally figured out it was a bulged battery.

Took it to the Apple store(after doing some searches online) walked out with a new battery, no charge. This was November 2011, so 3 years after purchasing the laptop with no AppleCare.

Initially he was going to charge me $125, but when I mentioned that there had been a recall associated with the battery on this iteration of the Unibody, he did some searching, found the issue documented, and replaced the battery at no charge.

We also have a 13" air that is about 6 months old. No sign of any issue with battery swell, but it took quite a bit longer than 6 month for the issue to become apparent with my MBPRo.

1. That image isn't an Apple Laptop. There are buttons that don't exist on any Apple computer...

2. Apple buys it's batteries from the same manufacturers as Lenovo, Toshiba, Samsung, Asus. Battery recalls happen for all of the above manufacturers...

3. I have an Air, owned a Powerbook, 2 Macbook Pros and none have ever caught on fire.

1) I wasn't posting a Macbook, I was posting a Sony battery catching fire, which was a response to the poster.

2) We already said that, but if you look for "Bulging battery" the only laptop with bulging battery problems was the Macbook.

3) Great. But my question was about batteries bulging not catching fire.

and as you can see. about 3 posters before me = Macbooks with bulging batteries. So, for a non mac user, this is a very important issue. All we see are Macbooks with bulging cases and batteries ready to explode. We don't know if this was or is still an issue, hence the question. This was/is a REAL Macbook problem, not some weird issue.

I've been watching this board ever since the 2010 Airs came out. I have seen 1 post complaining about a bulging battery on a Rev 1 Air. That doesn't mean there hasn't been more than 1, but it DOES mean it's not a normal occurrence, by any means.

Re: Best Thread of the Year.

There should be a best thread of the year contest where somehow people vote threads up and at the end of the year the most highly voted thread starter gets 500 posts or something added to his post count.

I would vote for this thread for its borderline insanity mixed with off the charts sincerity.

Hopefully. All I need to worry about now are cracked keys.

Thanks!

I haven't had a buldge issue since I started wearing pants of appropriate size;)

Both of my well-used and well-maintained Rev A MBA's went BANG suddenly after two years, several months apart.

Huge bulge on the bottom casing- about 1/2", with the trackpad bending upwards perhaps 1/4". They wouldn't even come close to closing afterwards. The total "new thickness" at the front edge was about an inch. Both batteries black plastic casings were split open at the same point. I will post pics tomorrow.

I might have been neutered had they actually been being used as laptops at the time.

I have read many news articles about this issue over the last year or so.

LOL!!!!!! Are you a boy or girl? :D

1. other company makes the batteries, i believe it is sony
2. only apple seems to be reported for it because they are internal and the bulging affects the laptop chassis. Most other laptop batteries are partially external or have mounting bracket space etc to expand into.

hmmmm. Nah. I don't think so.

No bulging battery here,

But in the gripe department, does anyone else find the paint on the MB-A to be kind of glittery and 1990's in a bad way.

If anyone from Apple is reading this thread (and I know you probably are) possibly consider a matte finnish for the next revision.

Just a suggestion.

It's not painted

My bulge issue tends to happen in the morning when I wake up, then it just kinda goes away on it's own. I havent gotten around to researching online to find out what the actual cause is.

I found this thread because my late 08 MBP has a bulging battery. I noticed my battery lid was not sitting flush anymore. How about that?

I've seen it on several. They're usually older ones with the original batteries. If the batteries are used constantly, they're cycled to failure before this ever becomes an issue. I have no idea if newer ones have been updated to compensate for this.

I have only had the 'bulge' issue on my second mac, a 2007 black macbook. Considering the issue only arose in the past month (after roughly 6 years of heavy use), I would say it's probably not something to worry about unless you have a rarer factory defect.

Inevitably, this will happen to all batteries as their condition fades, and typically your mac will alert you to degraded charging capacity (Option-Click the battery icon for a current read on its health.)

My best advice would be to regularly use the battery and don't keep it charging at all times.

I think the problem with exploding bulging batteries is when people leave their laptop on the charger 24/7. I never leave any laptop I have ever owned on a charger unattended.

The MBA battery charges pretty quick, so when the light goes green, I unplug the charger.

I know a guy who knew a guy whose MacBook Air exploded on his lap while he was playing StarCraft, and he lost both legs. He died from complications from the amputation a month later.

They say he haunts the local Apple Store, terrorizing men, women, children, and Genius alike, looking for revenge
