My kids keep asking for me to shave it off. They've never seen me without it. :p

When I was very little, my dad sent me to my room to play, while he shaved off his beard (for I don't know why) and then later called me out and when I saw him I started crying because I didn't know who he was. He's never shaved it off since.

Was that last week

I keeed because I love :p

You got me beat. I have had a goatee for about 15 years.

I've had my goatee for about 20 years.

Trim it with an electric beard trimmer.

Shave it off every few years, but never like the look so grow it straight back.

Luckily that takes about 2 days.

When I was younger I used to bleach it and dye it blue. The reason? It grown ginger, but my hair is brown. I thought if I dyed it blue, people wouldn't ask me why it grows a different colour. These days it's got the odd grey hair in it. But I won't go down the just for men path. I am what I am.

That childhood trauma explains a lot.

Hey...was that an old guy crack!?

What happened to patient confidentiality? You aren't supposed to disclose these things to anyone. I'm so embarrassed now.

BTW, can we finally update my appointment schedule to include weekends? I don't feel our 5 days a week sessions are helping.

Nobody is listening here...your completely twisted problems are safely hidden.

No weekend appointments available. I can only take so much strangeness.

My beard comes in looking like I've got scurvy, so I take a strict moral stance against you hair facer types.

And yeah, my upper lip ends up looking sorta porn 'stachy, too.

This is the key, know your face and recognize if it is beard friendly and compliant or not. :D

I do the goatee/mustache combination and keep it all trimmed to the same length. For the parts I do shave (most of my face and neck, in fact), I use a single-blade safety razor. An electric (or in my case, rechargeable) trimmer works wonders for keeping everything neatly cropped.

Beards seem to be pretty "in" these days, and I've chosen to follow the hairy masses and grow out a beard.

I'm looking for tips, tricks, and advice on how to properly grow, groom, and maintain a nice looking beard. Any certain products you use on it (creams, waxes, etc)? Tips on keeping a sharp, clean neck line? What do you do with your upper lip?

Two weeks was about all I used to do, then I'd trim it with a beard trimmer (down to stubble). I'm about 4-5 weeks in now. I struggle a bit with what to do with my upper lip. I used to just trim it every few days or so, but I don't want to go with the Amish beard, so I've been letting it go. Unfortunately my facial hair grows in dark reddish. That is where the plight with my upper lip comes into play. It looks kinda "porn-stache'y" when I let it get past about a week.

Anyways, speak up and share your tale of beard.
No creams, waxes fru fru crap = no.

I use conditioner occasionally, whatever stuff my girl stocks. I don't think it's imperative.

1. Water resistant electric trimmer, to keep in check and even. Max setting of 10 (mm?) on I think a Panasonic. ~weekly
2. Upper lip, I use the same trimmer, set to 6 (mm?). Much longer, tends to get in my mouth
3. A Mach3, shave 3-4 times a week to shave my neck to avoid the itches, and to keep the edges tidy.
4. Head also gets the mach3 treatment also, twice a week :) just say no to male pattern baldness.

I have been growing out the facial hair since Christmas. I use a hair trimmer once a week to keep everything even. I do keep the mustache clean at the lip line. Helps with those pesky mouth crevice hairs.

There the worse. Especially when kissing the wife.

I wish she would trim hers.....

(Disclaimer. My wife doesn't read MacRumors. If yours does, avoid one liners like this!).

Goatee since I have been about 20 and a mustache since I was 15. I use a hair clipper on mine once a week or it drives me crazy. Hate an unkempt beard. My clipper has all the perfect lengths for trimming my goatee. I am almost OCD about keeping it neat and have to be.

Working on the ambulance on occasions requires it. Plus there are times I am required to wear SCBA, so a clean trimmed goatee is the most facial hair I am allowed. I am tested every year to make sure it does not interfere with the equipment.

Excellent advice!

I've been told a beard suits me and I grow one every once in a while. I'm lucky I can grow a decently filled beard in about a week and a half but I'm ready to shave the damned thing off by week three lol. I shouldn't really have one though because my job demands asbestos grade dust masks as I often work with hardwoods and mdf. A beard breaks the seal and my boss suggested if I plan to keep it, I must have an air fed helmet style mask. It's a bit overkill for me and it's just easier to shave :)

Haven't had a beard since college( Late med school). Had to shave it then due to the work I was doing. Decided to regrow mine this winter.
Biggest advise I can give is to let it grow for 3 months before making a decision. ( Usually beards can be patchy in the first few months)
Trim your neck line & corners of mouth.( inch above adams apple )
Do wash it twice a week with shampoo and conditioner. (I use a tea tree shampoo due to sensitive skin)
and last but not least patience.;)

The whole hipster thing is weird in my honest opinion.

I don't mind a little scruff or a goatee, but this recent fad of these lumberjack beards are just plain ugly. It's a trend, that's all it is. Some hipster watched a show and thought "I want to be that guy with the plaid shirt and lumberjack beard". Ugh.
