Did anyone else expect a Beatles announcement after all the mentions they got? He played two Beatles songs, name checked a couple of albums and even used their album art in his summary.

It looked like he was setting up for a by the way kind of announcement, not that the Beatles should ever be mentioned as an aside. Certainly when the first mention of them came up capitalised on the macrumorslive report I thought something might be up but it all came to nothing - why do you tease us so Steve?
I figured with Steve's magic powers he would bring the 4 Beatles on stage and have them play something for us. I guess even Steve has his limits.

Beatles iPod

Imagine this, if you will. The Beatles 8 gigabyte (or larger) iPod complete with the entire Beatles library. 3.5" touch screen in a yellow case. Is Valentine's Day far away?

Of course to each his own but I have never gotten why the Beatles are a big deal? I grew up around that era but don't consider them to be super great. Now I am for anything that adds content that people want so Beatles for that reason will be a good thing. I think of them as the original boy band at first that morphed into drugged out folks. Some of the stuff in between is OK.

I always hear people say, "I don't like the Beatles, but I like this song..."

What does this mean???

Is it me, or are they confused...

I am one of the folks who say that. I am not a fan of the band or group. It might mean I don't like what they might stand for, or their individual ideas so I don't buy every thing they do or did. It usually means that I don't like the sound or style of the bulk of their catalog. An example would be not liking a particular genre of music but finding one song I enjoy out of that genre. I don't like country music as a type but I have a few songs in my library that are country tunes. But I might put all that aside and enjoy one or two songs from an artist that I don't particularly like. I have had artists that I liked so much I bought everything they did only to later look back and say wha??? Why did I do that?

You don't have to love the Beatles music. I do, and billions of other people do, but you don't.

But, you do have to recognize that without them, popular music would be an entirely different game right now. People can't remember a time when rock/pop was only ONE type of popular music. The Beatles made it THE type of music, and virtually everything that has come since is a direct result of that change; both musically, and in spirit, in terms of the artistic freedom and experimentation that the Beatles encouraged.

This is not to mention the enormous influence the Beatles had on the recording process itself; the technical advances that went down at Abbey Road in the 60's were mindboggling, and many have become standard studio practice.

So no, you don't have to love the music. But you must grant that without the Beatles, most of the music you DO love would be a whole lot different.

Interesting points considering you don't know the music I listen to. But you are probably correct in some ways. It is interesting that some of the innovation came from EMI technicians in the studio and the Beatles themselves were influenced by countless other American artists so who made who first?

I like the Beatles, though I seldom listen to their music. Lots of better and more recent stuff to listen to as far as I'm concerned. But there are lots and lots of people that will buy mp3's of all their music as soon as it is available legally from a download service.

They've just changed the single chart rules in the UK, so that all downloads sales count - previously the song had to be available on cd single as well for it to count. The general consensus is that when the Beatles are available for download they will easily occupy all of the top 10 single positions.

Again, not my cup of tea but I think it sums up just how big it will be once someone does license their catalog.

I was waiting for the 'we've licensed the Beatles' announcement after he'd played some of their songs as well. Though thinking about it, that would be done at a separate announcement, when Apple need some easy pr.

I agree; it was a teaser. I think everyone was expecting the announcement, and playing The Beatles during the keynote got everyone excited.

But this clearly deserves its own event. Also, 2007 is the 20th anniversary of the CD releases, and the 40th anniversary of the release of Sgt. Pepper. These are both big milestones, and both Apples will want to capitalize on it. I don't think it was coincidence that they played a track from Sgt. Pepper (Lovely Rita was it? I haven't seen the keynote). Look for an announcement in the near future, followed by a release (of at least Sgt. Pepper) on June 1, which is the 40th anniversary date.

In addition to downloads, I'd also really like to see upgraded CD (or even surround) releases of the UK albums.
