Beats me too.

Ask any audiophile, beats earphones would probably be the last thing he/she recommends. Many of them hold the opinion that beats earphones are 45% Design 45% Hype and only 10% sound quality

In fact, fan boys over at the android camp think the same about Apple too. Seems like we really are going to be design and hype over quality

My biggest question is why Dre wasn't at these ReCode interviews and how long that guy is going to last and how many people are going to "retire" before he does.

I'm simply not buying through iTunes anymore. This deal makes me sick and I am disappointed that Cook and Cue had to resort to bringing in these guys into Apple. Oh well. Off to HD Tracks to get some 24 bit downloads and to a Amazon for CDs.

I'm sure Jony is thrilled at having to take over the design of this:

I have the Bose Soundlink Mini and it's the best $200 I've spent on a Bluetooth speaker. Not all Bose stuff is crappy.

The problem is that if you want REAL audio, you have to put a couple more zeros behind the $200 to get much better audio and that's for people that have the financial means to do so. Oh well, audio for the masses. Enjoy.

His name is Iovine, not Lovine. Troubled history? Monster was granted the rights to manufacture and develop the first generation of Beats Headphones. After the 5 year contract expired, Beats Electronics moved on from them. They didn't maneuver... they simply didn't renew a contract.

To be fair people were accusing Dre of being a murderer and thug based on what he said in his music or that they just don't like him.

He was also in the news for beating the crap out of a woman

Because "Mix Tape" is copyrighted. ;-)

Basically, what Beats Music does (or tries to do) is be able to make personalized Playlists ("Mix Tapes") on the fly for whatever time of day or mood or activity strikes your fancy, and it will include (along with what you already know and/or own) new music you may not even be aware of or would think to add to the playlist. Each playlist being personally tailored to you at that particular moment in time. The mixture of human "curation" with complex algorithms is the key to Beats Music.

Add that "technology" to 800 million credit cards that Apple has on file via iTunes, the App Store, etc. and, well… $$$

That's not the type of subscription service I would want. I would want a version of iTunes that basically works just like iTunes does now, but instead of playing a sample of each song, it would play the WHOLE song with the best sound quality possible. I have my own catalog of ripped from CD (AIFF) and High Res 24 bit AIFF and that's what I want, and if I want to check out other stuff, I go to iTunes radio if I just want some "mix", but that's rare. I usually like listening to the album in it's entirety since I buy albums (CDs) that are more concept album or a performance not this C-RAPPY one hit wonder album mentality. I don't like albums where there's only one or two good songs on the album.

You're really going to dig up something from 25 years ago when he was a gangbanger in Compton? Got anything more recent? As far as I know, Dre hasn't been arrested since 1991.

I don't expect you to understand the hood life that many young blacks get mixed up in, but this man cleaned up his act and pulled himself out of that world A LONG LONG TIME AGO.

Why not preach the choir against domestic violence to Christian Slater, Sean Penn, Alan Grayson or Billionaire Bill Koch? Oh that's right, they're white...

You know him personally? Didn't think so.

Interesting take - as a music buff I find that often, its not that I don't know what I want to listen to but that I want to discovery new stuff that fits my likes.

As the article states, algorithms only go so far.

An "awful" hardware division that pulled in over $1.5 billion in revenue last year....

revenue does not = class nor refinement: as apple is currently evolving its image to become. Although their drive for $$$ would explain a recent quandary for sacrificing quality for mass production, 'thinness' and shipments- good job Tim (Cook)!

Didn't insinuate any of this....simply that a $2.5B price for a hardware division pulling in $1.5B isn't really far fetched.

Regardless of what many of the audiophiles (read snobs) think here, Beats are extremely popular and dominate the market.

.

yes dominate which market: asbo teens? I, personally am apathetic towards beats audio hardware - they are hardly anything to 'sing and shout' about - there are much superior products for half the price!

I fear apple has (mis)invested a lot of money for a fad! Time will tell. $2.5Bn investment for a company grossing over $1Bn does make fiscal sense, presuming market sales remain at their current rate.

Although, i am thankful that they did not buy i.am+ foto.sosho

I believe they have roughly 40% of the $100+ headphone market.

Whoever is buying them, I don't know. I personally don't see the need for a $100+ pair of headphones as the EarPods are free and work great for me.

Just stating facts. Whatever bias you have, try to look past it. As a hardware business, Beats has been very successful. The Streaming side is where future boosts will come.
