Honestly, I feel like Apple’s running Beats almost as a completely separate brand. There’s not really a lot of cross-pollination, and Beats devices don’t really seem to slot into the matrix of Apple’s AirPods/HomePod range. Maybe there are a few Beats products that do, but most Beats items seem to be doing their own thing and tend to target a different market segment than Apple’s audio range.
They draw ever so slightly upon Apple`s rep (although the always had their own) I guess, but Beats at their current level won`t do anything good for Apple rep. Beats has the obvious benefit. One advantage to Apple would be the "chip distribution" - more devices with "Apple connectivity" without providing the very same to their competitiors.

Two things:

1: how long did MacRumors had the review unit? It seems like this was planned out with all the teasing and stuff.

2:

$149.99 AND NO WIFI?!?!?!

Seriously?!?!?!?! At that price point, I expect WiFi support and built in Siri support like HomePod mini so it can be used as HomeKit hub. At that price point, it’s cheaper to buy a HomePod mini and portable battery with AC plugs so it can be used on the go as regular Bluetooth speaker and at home as wireless smart speaker.

The lack of WiFi is a major letdown IMO.
AND … NOT stereo!

Decent price if the quality is there. But I find Bluetooth to be super annoying for speakers. Whenever you walk out of the room, you have to decide whether to leave your phone or take the speaker with you, so the audio doesn't cut out.
And how exactly are you more empowered if the speaker is…plugged into the wall?

Can’t take the speaker with you, and also do you need your phone next to you at all times? Sounds like a problem that has nothing to do with the speaker.

That being said it does make you appreciate the ecosystem of HomePod. Connected to WiFi? Great, no worrying about being away from your phone for 10 seconds and having a mental breakdown.

This is fine and all - but it is bizarre to me that Beats does not make Airplay speakers or soundbars…seems like an obvious market to extend into.

Yea, exactly. Wifi speakers are superior.

It's not about being away from my phone. I actually have relatively low screen time--it just lives in my pocket. Still, I don't like making a habit of leaving it all over the place. It's expensive and it contains basically my entire private life. Even if I could leave it on the table next to the speaker, doing so just for music continuity seems like a silly risk and poor user experience.
