Now I'm an odd cat...

I write right-handed. I throw right-handed and I bat right-handed. However, when I fish (which hasn't been in years), I cast left handed. When I play hockey, I shoot left-handed. When I get the chance to shoot archery or rifle, I shoot left-eyed.

It's almost odd that I can't write left-handed, especially the way I switch off between everything.

I write left handed but I throw right and bat right. I use fork/knives lefty but chopsticks righty. I used to brush my teeth right but one day I realized that my left hand took that from my right.

Ok Its been five months and would like to post my results which I think are pretty good.

The difference between left and right handed writting in speed is minimal, but my left hand is much more legible. I now use mice, eat, shoot my paintball gun, and most things left handed. I actually prefer using my left hand becuase I have to think about what I am actually doing and then do a better job at it.

The only thing I dont do left handed is draw/Paint which require some real precise control which I don't quite have yet but with time and practice I'll eventually get it.

a thing that drive me crazy is right handed only objects. I have a new appreciation for ambidextrous objects.

My results were ok i guess... I eat and use the mouse with my left hand (except for Halo; I got pwnd using my left hand :)) I tried writing, but I almost failed the semester becasue of it!

It is true you have to think about things to do them now. But like you said, this makes you better.

Does it give you another level of appreciation for Apple products, too? Apple has been a very progressive company about this point -- their mice, trackpads and iPods, and most everything have been accessible with either hand. Curiously, the iPhone only works by tilting it one way, which leaves the home button on the right hand side. I hope the 6G iPod, if it uses a virtual scrollwheel and a similar iPhone design, doesn't follow suit.

I'm interested to know if you've noticed all the other things us "South Paws" notice -- awkward notebooks and smeared ink, to name a few. I can't use gel pens because of this. I sometimes encounter a pair of right-handed scissors and immediately feel like I've been reduced to a mentally handicapped state. :(

EDIT: I should read the entire thread first! Sorry, sorry. :)

I dont normally use a pen more than signing my name which dont move my hand for, but the one time I did use a gel pen it was a mess.

I guess I didn't really notice it but you're right apple products are all ambidextrous. <- I also learned to spell a new word.

I had "fun" in elementary school when I was taugh how to write with a fountain pen, I generally smeared the ink as I wrote. Which proved to be useful later since i could just write goobly gook and then tell the teacher s/he misread it due to bad writting on my part...

I am still a lefty when I write but am now mostly ambidextrous with a left bias. In tennis or sword fight its easy for me to switch hands and confuse the heck out of the opponent...

Meh.

funny you should meantion this because i used to be left handed. around age 4 i was doing everything using my left hand, using spoons, coloring, etc. but my parents decided to change that. everytime i would use my left hand for something, my parents would say no and tell me to use my right hand. and now im right handed

Might be something for me to try out...Basketball season is ending, and in the off season it might be good to try and work on being left handed(then basketball will be easier to use my left hand...maybe I'll try)

When I get the chance to shoot archery or rifle, I shoot left-eyed.
This always screws me up. I'm right handed, But my left eye is dominant. So I end up shooting left-handed which is always awkward. I have a lazy eye. ;)

This sounds like a bad idea. It can actually confuse your brain, from what I understand.
Why do this? There are better ways to be different than needlessly using your non-dominant hand. Instincts are there for a reason.

i wanna learn how to play a left handed bass.

if i can do that, i will be able to play every bass ever made. imagine how it'd look if i played a right handed bass for one song, then a left handed one for another

i need sleep...

Why not be ambidextrous? That just sounds like a good idea. Being able to do any task equally well with either hand. Just becuase I start using my left hand for a majority of what I do wont suddenly crap out my right hand.

If I start stuttering, become even more messed up and confused, or die early I'll post it hear as this being a bad idea.

Face it, if your right hand is too tired due to all the work you've been giving it.

It might be time to shut off the porn. ;)

But you are right, I imagine it easier to type if you start making more use of your left hand.

At least for art and music, it can be really beneficial. Get you to break out of your mold. Get you to 'think less,' as in, don't overanalyze. And if you work 'tight' it can help you to loosen up your style and/or technique.

Several of my family members are ambidextrous, my left hand is more dexterous but my right is stronger  I can play most sports both-handed...I think it's because I was born left-handed but was taught to write right-handed (catholic schools...sheesh :p ). It is possible to teach yourself to use your unnatural hand, one of my friend's is right-handed but over the summer taught herself to write with both hands. Both are now equally legible (or illegible...)

I have been for the past couple of hours working on My MBP and my G5 at the same time. This is hard, but neat. I got them networked together to share files.

I've tried to write with my left hand before (i'm right handed) and it seems more natural to me for the left handed writing to come out as a mirror image of my right handed writing (ie. written backwards). you would think that it would take some thought to be able to write letters backwards... but it happens naturally... surprising really

I can do this to! If I take two pens and put one in each hand and start writing with my right hand, my left hand will mirror the right hand, and in okay handwriting.

Well i m naturally left handed so it is alright for me. The only thing that i do right handed is use a computer mouse.

I tried to do this once with mixed results.

I broke my right arm (not on purpose :) ) when I was about 12 and had to use my left arm for everything. I figured it would be a good opportunity to switch to a lefty. It worked well for a time but I must have got lazy when the right arm healed as I reverted back to writing with that hand.

However, the experience definitely benefitted me. My left arm is much stronger than other peoples left arms. I almost always win a left handed arm wrestle even when I lose to the same person using my right arm. I can play squash and badmington quite well with my left hand, tennis is a bit harder. I can play pool quite well with my left which is useful for those tricky shots when you're shooting down the right side of the table. I can kick a football (soccer) very well with my left leg and now choose to play left back or left midfield. I used to use a mouse with my left hand but, at work, choose to have my phone on the left side of the keyboard and that has carried over to computer use at home.

If you want to do this I'd think that you'd have to be mentally disciplined to do everything with your left hand which you would normally do with your right. It will feel awkward but after a while will become second nature. Everyday things like texting on your mobile/cell phone, using your iPod, locking/unlocking doors with a key, opening a beer bottle etc. Loads of things like this will slowly increase your dexterity.
