Bad news peeps.

We did the switcheroo and our account showed both myself and my son eligible for upgrade. Then I signed in tonight and not only are we back to not being eligible but my husband, who has an iPhone and is eligible, now shows not eligible and our account shows no data plan for anyone, including him.

Now I fear I will not be able to even get ONE at the discounted rate.

BAH.

Just wait and check it tomorrow. At night (crazy, I know) it seems to show everyone "not able to do this feature at this time." It did it for me last night, too... but I'm hopeful it will be back to the same in the morning. Hopeful, at least.

You're right. Your post prompted me to check and I've had an iPhone since last July. Prior to tonight, it was showing me upgrade eligible. I hope the poster that stated their web site does this at night is correct, otherwise there will be a lot of people calling AT&T CSR's tomorrow.

I hope you are right because our lines also show we do have the apple date plan along WITH our other data plans- should we cancel the other data plans? IN other words, my son shows a 15.00 data plan AND the iPhone plane, mine shows the iPhone plan and a 4.99 texting feature....

Read back through the posts and you'll see that I had the same freak out last night (but all was good this morning). All will be good in the morning, I think.

I'd just chill til Friday. Don't do anything 'til you have your $199 or $299 iPhone working. THEN you can monkey with the data plans. For what it's worth, I had two data plans (BlackBerry + iPhone) and then eventually the BlackBerry one went away on its own. :)

Damn mine says the same thing. ATT is doing some maintenance tonight though so just sit tight...

edit: mine says eligible 3/2009 and i bought my phone in july 2007 so march 2009 isn't 2 years. There is a new thread with lots of people saying this same thing and none of them have even sold their phone yet.

I wouldn't worry yet. Like I said, ATT is doing maintenance.

Crap

So I did the IMEI route rather than SIM card swap, and initially the site listed me as upgrade eligible right away. Then it went to the "maintanence" message. Now it says I'm not eligible again. I still have the iPhone data plan associated to my account, however.

Any thoughts on this? Has AT&T caught on and done the same to any of you guys?

I reported the same thing in an earlier post- hoping it will change tomorrow...I still show the data plan but not eligible- same with my son. And now my husband , who has an iPhone ans was eligible- is not. Really not sure what is going on.... and not feeling to great about this....

does anybody know whether this problem is permanent? i was planning on doing the switch this afternoon with my friends iphone but now seeing some people are having problems on their account webpage i dont know if i should do it or not. and also has anyone done this with a business account? im wondering because we sign in on a diferent page than myWireless. and on my business page it shows what phone i currently have but does not show when im elligible does anyone know if this changes after the switch? thanks

Any of you cheaters stop to think that your actions might be having a detrimental effect on people who are legitimately eligible for the upgrade pricing?

Trust me they don't think that way. It is a very selfish and self-centered mindset.

Pretty much. Now I'm NOT elgible for an upgrade and now I'm hoping that the store will see on my account that I'm both using an iPhone(which I will have with me anyway) and have a legitimate iPhone plan on my account. I'm also hoping that AT&T just closed the loophole so customers wouldn't continue to try to beat the system.

not working?

Just to contribute some results -- last night I tried swapping SIMs w/ my roommate's iphone. swap worked just fine; plugged his iphone w/my SIM into my itunes, registered, signed up for new data plan, etc, and all seemed to work pretty seamlessly. I then logged into my ATT account, and while my old phone was still shown, it seemed to say I was now eligible for upgrade, and my plan details reflected the iphone data plan.
I was curious why it still showed my old phone, so I switched it to the 8GB iphone (fatal mistake? I wouldn't think so -- I'd think ATT pays attention to the rate plan details, but I'm just guessing).

So this morning when I checked again, my old phone was back up again and the upgrade eligibility was back to 10/2009, but my plan details still show the iphone data plan in there (weak). Seems like this has happened to other people too? Did I miss some crucial step in this process, or is it fair to assume ATT's started to counter this gimmick? think it has been floating around the internet for long enough now...

It appears that AT&T has caught on and this has ultimately affected some of us legitimate iPhone customers in the process

I honestly can't imagine if you're a legit iphone user that jack*sses testing loopholes like myself will screw you out of your discount. If they can shut down this gimmick, they can recognize who's legit and who's not. it was worth a shot. Why not?

I just barrowed a friends iphone and activated it with my sim card. Then ATT's website it said I was eligible for an upgrade a few days ago when I did it. I just checked today and they just changed it and now it says I'm not eligible. I'm wondering if they are catching on?

That seems to be the situation. What is your friend's update status?

I was thinking about doing this activation trick for my wife but became a little worried when reading about some of the potential problems others were having and decided to take a look and check my upgrade status. I logged in this morning (having done NOTHING at all to my account since upping my text messages 8 months ago) and my upgrade eligibility status was listed as Feb 2009. Needless to say that concerned me since I bought my iPhone on day 1 last year and am planning on getting a 3G tomorrow. I called AT&T and was told that my upgrade status reflected when I would be eligible to upgrade to another non-iPhone but that since I already had an iPhone (as indicated on my account) that I would be able to upgrade to a 3G tomorrow at the discounted price.

I think that the key to this is that an account indicate that an AT&T customer already has an iPhone prior to midnight tonight (obviously). My question is about whether or not it matters how the customer got the iPhone. I know if i went out and bought another iPhone on Ebay today and activated it and wasn't eligible I'd be pretty ticked. I'd considered syncing my iPhone this evening, wiping it and giving it to my wife to activate and use tonight. I'd just be without a cell phone for 12 hours. Anybody have any insight about this? Anybody who did the SIM switch indicating that their device is now an iPhone or is everybody still showing their original phone?

I've read that once you perform this SIM card activation on someone else's iphone that the ATT website should show your account as having an iphone. I followed the steps pretty much to a T, but my old phone still showed up. Question is -- since that eligibility upgrade date pertains to non-iphones, does it also not matter what phone shows up on your online account? I kind of don't think it doesn't, considering you can change to whatever phone you want on the website. Maybe what's looked at is the plan details? I've got the iphone data plan in my details now, and I sure as hell don't have an iphone (yet).

Or at checkout when they pull up your cell# does it show what phone(s) your SIM card has been activated with? what they pull up is obviously most important...

i just did the switch today and i talked to 2 att reps, who said that even though your account shows you ineligible for an upgrade, if you have an iphone you get the new price.

Early Termination Fee?

Let's say that you are not eligible for an upgrade but, there is always an early termination fee correct?

If you are willing to pay 199.00 for an iphone and an unsubsidized phone is 399.00, then you are looking at a 200.00 difference.

So my question is this. How much is an early termination fee? I know ATT went to court with other cell phone carriers a while back about lowering the fees but, I am still not sure what the price would be?

If the price is under 150.00 for an early termination, it might be worth it to pay the extra 150.00 or so just to get your hands on that beautiful machine!

Pricing option to gain more minutes?

I was curious of something that I could not find anywhere. My brother has the first generation iphone and is looking to upgrade to the 3g. Would it be possible for him to sign up for a new contract under the individual plan for 900 minutes at $89.99/mo. and then have me add on an iphone for the additional 9.99 + 30 data plan. making the total of the additional phone to be 39.99. If you add this to the 89.99 you get a grand total of $129.98 for 900 minutes instead of the family talk plan that only gives you 700 minutes for 129.99. Is this something that ATT is allowing or not?

Just to add some additional info to the mix...

I called and spoke to a CSR who also told me that, while I was not eligible for a "standard" equipment discount - a fact accurately reflected on the OLAM - since I am an active Iphone user I would be eligible for discount pricing in the store tomorrow.

Out of curiosity, what is your status in terms of the iPhone?

I personally had purchased one off of CL, had upgrade eligibility, and subsequently lost it. However, I still have the iPhone data plan on my account. Where that puts me I don't know.

That said, what is your background regarding your iPhone status so I can try and compare my own situation to yours?

Thanks! :D

Upgrade Eligibility Back

I checked my wireless account this morning and to my horror discovered I was no longer eligible for an upgrade. However, after some time to loathe my misfortune, I rechecked my wireless account just a second ago to see if upgrade eligibility had hopefully changed. Low and behold both my wife and I, who had been eligible and then were not, are now back to eligible status. So I wonder what is going on there?

FYI, I had purchased two used iPhones from CL, activated them for my wife and I, and then resold them. So, fingers crossed, perhaps the discounted upgrade will work tomorrow.
