Yup haha, I have become obsessed with trying to keep my iPhone clean and mint 24/7 and it sucks.. I think that I'm just gonna calm down now and accept it as a device that I should enjoy, that's going to eventually have it's wear, and when my warranty is about to end, find a problem with it and replace it with a new one, for resale :)

Abundance of obsession met with a lack of ethics = awesome.

Didn't read all the other responses yet but just wanted to jump in with GET A LIFE OP. Ok, now to go read the other responses.

Sounds like something you need to discuss with a therapist. I'm actually serious. If you're having physical repercussions over an obsession with a physical object like a phone, you have bigger issues. Not only that, but you obsess over keeping this object in pristine condition for aesthetics and you put an ugly-ass case on it just to protect it? You have it all backwards. It's a tool, nothing more. It's like getting an anxiety attack over a screwdriver.

I agree with the guy.

Op, i'm the same way even with my Glas.tr screen protector lol.. ITs just habit i guess..

Plus i had a chip ontop on the edge of the phone right out of the box.. I guess mine was one of the one's with the chip from factory..

Suggest getting a good screen protector and good protective case and that should ease your worries.. .

Hi all. Hoping there have been iPhone users similar to me, and who can give me some advice to get over something so stupid.

Some things to know:

- I bought a new iPhone 5, white, 64GB one week ago.
- Since then, I have been obsessing over keeping it mint condition. Every time I use it, I wipe it down, check for scratches etc.
- In the first week I have also noticed 3 very small chips/dents on the back of my iPhone - no bloody clue how they got there, especially since I am so careful. This has thoroughly pissed me off, it's doing my head in.
- I now have a good quality, "Belkin Grip Candy Sheer - Black and Green" case.

I have never been so obsessed with the maintenance of a device like I have with this phone, it's absolutely RIDICULOUS. It's gotten to a point where I look at my iPhone, and don't want to use it, because I don't want to wreck it anymore (as said before, I've already somehow chipped the back 3 times). I literally GET A HEADACHE every time I stare at it now, because all these 'OCD' thoughts arise, eg "OMG, what if dust/sand has gotten into the case" or "Does my iPhone look a bit dented?" or "Is the white getting dirty!?". I don't even feel like going near it now, it's gotten THAT bad.

I want to keep it as clean as possible because I like having my products in a very good condition, plus it would be nice if I could sell it in a years time when the next iPhone comes out.

I feel like a complete idiot, which I am, but I was wondering how I could get over this. Any tips/advice?

Thanks

Yeah, I was quite like that, flawless iPhone with a thin snap on case since day one.
Finally switched to a back protector film instead and accepted the fact that it might get scuffs.
Plus I don't consider it as a new toy anymore, it's over a month old :p

Still flawless after 2 weeks "naked", its so liberating.

Stop reading paranoid threads full of tears over scratches, it really helps.

in my eyes I see a device that costs a small fortune and is easily subject to the elements. But itll probably get problems anyway so I'll just swap it out for another one around the end of it's life span.

As someone who is both a psychiatric practitioner (I assess, diagnose, counsel, and prescribe meds) and who is completely "OCD" about my iPhone as well, I hope I can offer you some support/advice. :)

First of all, the phone:

If you're anything like me, you want to enjoy your iPhone's stunning aesthetics while still ensuring its protection. I would love to go with a "naked" phone, but the very motive driving me to do that is the same that dictates covering it (at least slightly) to prevent damage. The solution I have personally found is to use a side and back wrap/skin to prevent scratches on the aluminum. This allows for excellent scratch protection both inside and outside of cases, but to look at it, most people would never know it's there because I tried to match the colors & textures to those of the original design as much as possible. I also use a Spigen screen protector (and my glas.tr is being shipped right now, actually). Sometimes I need additional drop protection, and for that I use either a pouch-type case or a bumper. (I'm including pictures of the skin below and one of it with the bumper.)

Now, the "OCD":

What you're describing in your original post does suggest some traits that may fall along the obsessive-compulsive spectrum. That is not to say you have actual "full blown" OCD; a diagnosis like that cannot be made from a post on an online forum (which I remind my patients regularly :) ). However, if you find that obsessing over your iPhone and/or other things is causing a significant amount of interference in your day-to-day life, you may want to have an assessment by a psychiatrist (prescribes meds if needed) and a therapist (provides counseling services). Current diagnostic criteria for OCD define interference in daily functioning in part by quantifying the time spent tending to obsessions/compulsions. if obsessions (e.g., worrying about damaging your phone) and/or compulsions (e.g., cleaning it thoroughly after each use) take up more than an hour of your day, you may want to ask a professional about it.

find a problem with it and replace it with a new one, for resale :)

And you confirm yourself as a troll before I even need to find proof. Thanks for doing the hardwork for me buddy.

This happened to me with my iPhone 4, back in the days: cleaning it everyday, avoid taking it out etc. Got the iPhone 5 on day one and was never really careful with it (I clean it once per week and sometimes even slip it in my schoolbag).
What I noticed is actually pretty funny: the 5 is looking GREAT (no dents, scratches...) whilst I remember that my iPhone 4 quickly got scratches etc.

Conclusion: enjoy, love your phone, and use it for God's sake! ;)

That is exactly my story as well.

I'm just going to tell you to put a Zagg invisble shield on it with the frontbacksides, and enjoy your life. I have a decent nick in the chamfered edge because I dropped it on concrete. You move on. The phone is still beautiful. It's like a perfectly crafted watch, small dings and scratches only serve to add personality. Like an Engadget reporter wrote 'I have a nice nick in my iPhone 4 from where I ran into a wall when I was drunk, and I like it because that was a good night and it reminds me of that.' Learn to enjoy your phone, not obsess over it :)

AppleCare +, Sena pouch, all I need.

Otterbox Defender for outdoorsy stuff.

I own a Galaxy Note 2 and was using it with way too much care earlier. I had started using super bulky cases that took away its masculine good looks.

For a couple of days, I started using it naked and it felt like a totally new phone. My advice - just use it.

Consider yourself slapped. Seriously though, if you're THAT riled up about your phone, you should seek help. My fianceé's engagement ring cost 8x what you consider your iPhone to be worth and she doesn't put a case on it, or worry about if it gets brushed against something, or looks like it's actually been worn as it's intended to be. You don't get bonus points for having a flawless phone at the end of your life, and resale value isn't going to be cut in half because it's used.

Definitely. This sounds like real OCD (the actual psychological condition, not just being a bit picky as it has come to be used on the internet).

Having AppleCare is so liberating.

But having AppleCare isn't going to prevent scratches. Sure, you could replace it if such scratches occur, but at a price.

If I was the OP, I would store and transport my iPhone in its original box. Taking it out only for special purposes. You could also get velvet spray paint to coat the inside of the box with a soft material.

i think you need to go see a shrink
is a phone not your life

when my iphone 4s first dropped the back side cracked
when i first saw it i was like dam, oh well and kept on moving with my life

1 or 2 years from now you'll probably buy a new phone and forget all about your iphone 5 ever having marks on it

Why obsess/worry over the inevitable?

Your phone will scratch/wear over time. Can you do things to prevent it from happening so quick? Sure, get full body protectors, put a case on it, baby it, etc.

But worrying about the condition of your smartphone constantly, and getting sick to your stomach about it, is really a problem.

I love my phone to be pristine too. My 10 month old 4S looks like it's in mint condition still. But I dont obsess or worry about it, I just take extra care.

If it get's scratched, it gets scratched. You'll replace the phone soon enough anyway.

Dude, sounds like a case of objectum sexuality. See a therapist.

I was thinking scrupulosity myself. Still, see a therapist.

How can you all not realise it was a troll post?
