Hi all. Hoping there have been iPhone users similar to me, and who can give me some advice to get over something so stupid.

Some things to know:

- I bought a new iPhone 5, white, 64GB one week ago.
- Since then, I have been obsessing over keeping it mint condition. Every time I use it, I wipe it down, check for scratches etc.
- In the first week I have also noticed 3 very small chips/dents on the back of my iPhone - no bloody clue how they got there, especially since I am so careful. This has thoroughly pissed me off, it's doing my head in.
- I now have a good quality, "Belkin Grip Candy Sheer - Black and Green" case.

I have never been so obsessed with the maintenance of a device like I have with this phone, it's absolutely RIDICULOUS. It's gotten to a point where I look at my iPhone, and don't want to use it, because I don't want to wreck it anymore (as said before, I've already somehow chipped the back 3 times). I literally GET A HEADACHE every time I stare at it now, because all these 'OCD' thoughts arise, eg "OMG, what if dust/sand has gotten into the case" or "Does my iPhone look a bit dented?" or "Is the white getting dirty!?". I don't even feel like going near it now, it's gotten THAT bad.

I want to keep it as clean as possible because I like having my products in a very good condition, plus it would be nice if I could sell it in a years time when the next iPhone comes out.

I feel like a complete idiot, which I am, but I was wondering how I could get over this. Any tips/advice?

Thanks

Consider yourself slapped. Seriously though, if you're THAT riled up about your phone, you should seek help. My fianceé's engagement ring cost 8x what you consider your iPhone to be worth and she doesn't put a case on it, or worry about if it gets brushed against something, or looks like it's actually been worn as it's intended to be. You don't get bonus points for having a flawless phone at the end of your life, and resale value isn't going to be cut in half because it's used.

Yip..True that. I got my iP5 3 days ago.. slapped a gear4 slim case on it. Done..
I had this problem 10 years ago. I bought my First Ducati, Brand new 748SPS.. cost me $25000 ( a lot 10 yrs ago ).....Road it home 3 hours in the pouring rain...... My mates couldnt believe it!!... Its just a motorcycle! its meant to be ridden rain, hail or shine........ take a deep breath and realise.... its all just "stuff"..:D

Abundance of obsession met with a lack of ethics = awesome.

The guy wants to baby his new toy, throwing in hyperboles like "obsessed" and what not, but you're going to act like you don't view your 'tool' as a bit of a toy? Is that why you're a member of a Mac discussion thread? The thing about the iphone is that it is a tool...and a toy, and this dude wants to baby it a while.

No one cares what you spent on your fiancee's ring. And if you spent 8x what I paid for my phone, that's not much anyway.

If you knew you didn't want your iPhone damaged at all, why did you use it naked??
I'm like you in hating any marks or scratches on my phone, but I'm smart enough to get a case in the beginning. It doesn't have to be a $50 bulky ugly otterbox. I'm using a clear thin TPU case and my iPhone is mint and still thin and sexy.

I cared for the first few weeks, now I have skins on the back and side and use it naked and not worry too much about the chamfered edges.

I figure I'm going to get a new one in 11 months time anyway, and being in 'pristine' condition doesn't get you that much more than one in 'used' condition, and the stress and ugly cases isn't worth the $50-$100 extra.

Haven't dropped it yet, but I'm sure the first drop will hurt the most!

You gotta chill out! I use mine naked, and I know it's gonna get scratched up... Screen protectors take away from the feel of the phone, and the iP5 especially is just way too beautiful and light/thin to slap a case on.

OP, I am the exact same way, my girlfriend and coworkers think I should see a doctor for my OCD condition I have towards this phone. I hate being like this but I just can't help it.

It is related to how much you value the iPhone. If it were $99 and no contract issue, I'd be using it to crush garlic or to kill roaches.

But since, it cost me $1000, I'd hold it on to me like it were my very own child. But I'd still use it though.

I'm the same way so I got a front and back screen shield and a otterbox defender on top of that.

If your that worried about your iphone5 get applecare+ and at least you'll be able to enjoy it knowing that for $50 it can be replaced.

Think of the scratches, dents, chips as your personalization. Take joy in knowing that your phone is one of a kind....then smash it with a sludgehammer and get a bag phone.

At least you recognize that you're being ridiculous. A lot of people obsess over their phonse and think it's normal. It's just a phone. It makes calls, sends texts, plays music, gives you information, none of which are the least bit affected by scratches. As far as resale value goes, the difference you'll get in price will be so insignificant if it has scratches or not that you'll spend more on coffee in two weeks than you'll lose from a few scratches. Now, if its smashed, that's a different story.

So just enjoy your phone. You're not gonna have it forever.

I used to be like this but nowadays i've stopped caring. I'll be replacing the phone in 12 months anyway so the minor stuff makes little difference.

Just wondering, have u ever owned a car? n had ur first scratch?

I know how you feel.

I dropped mine..got two big dents in both corners.

Annoys me that much I may have to buy a new phone..sell the dented one. Works fine but spoiled the appearance.

The cost of repair quoted on here means it's not worth repairing actually cheaper to buy a replacement.

If the $1000 cost was a lot of money to you maybe you should just buy a phone you can afford.

Take my advice...what I have done for the last 6 iPhones...

Use it as much as possible...no case...no screen protector.

Then when new iPhone releases...take the 5 into Apple..say something is wrong with it ( every iPhone ive ever had, has had a problem almost a year after buying it ) replace it, get a shiny new one..sell it.

Assuming you upgrade every year like me.

good advice, this is what I do except I don't sell it.

Also, think about the end result of your OCD. Ultimately it's about selling the phone for money. Does it make sense to go through all that for 400 or so dollars a year down the line?

Dude, take a Xanax and chill out. I like to keep my stuff flawless too but it's a phone and sometimes crap happens. If you literally giving yourself headaches over your phone you have some seriously weird priorities.
