Agreed. And I'm a longtime Apple fan.

At least their good about getting you a new machine most of the time, I've dealt with other companies and it takes forever to get a rplacement or you just dont get one.
 
So I posted a thread yesterday about how I bought one of the new MBPs on Thursday night and noticed a dead pixel. Since I paid so much money for the machine I was really annoyed and took it back to the Apple Store today where the genius was nice enough to offer me a "DOA" exchange for another brand new machine. I got home and booted it up and everything seemed to be find and I was really happy with my experience. I really only had about 20 minutes to play around with the new one. Now that I'm sitting down and really messing with it I notice that the left hand side of the screen is starting to flicker with 3" lines that keep re-appearing. WTF APPLE!?

I've been seeing some threads with other people complaining about dust and dead pixels as well. Also, now that I've realized the flickering lines I've come to find another dead pixel along with 2 stuck pixels that are the color blue. I've had the older 2.2GHz MBP and the newer 2.5GHz MBP that had no problems at all and I absolutely loved them both. I'm really disappointed in this model. Don't get me wrong, the unibody, the design, and the trackpad are amazing but I'm having a feeling that us first Rev buyers are getting faulty displays.

Now I have to make another appointment where I'm sure they're going to love seeing my face again. I honestly don't know whether to ask for another exchange, downgrade to the regular MB (anyone have defects with these), or simply ask for a refund and head back the world of Thinkpads.

Anyone else seeing a faulty display on their new MBP?

I have that SAME EXACT problem :( A line of horizontal pixels in the lower left hand side about 2 inches long flickers white every 10 minutes for about 2 milli seconds. However, after I ran the software update, It only happens every 30 minutes. I tried reinstalling and the same thing happened... it was more frequent untill after I updated. Now, it only happens every 2 hours, so I think it goes away with time but somehow reappears every time you reinstall OS X... I'm not going to take mine back because I don't want to have to transfer all my files again.

hmmm...does the Apple Care restart if you bring the machine down for repair? If you send it for repair near the end of Apple care, will they give you some extra months to allow you to feel satisfied with your repair?
 
Just an update for everyone out there. I just got back from the Apple store for the 3rd time and I think I've found a winner. I made an appointment for 11am, walked in about 5 of and one of the "concierge" asked me if I had an appointment and what's wrong with the machine. I told him "I do have one for 11am and the screen on this machine has flickering lines". He said "Oh, well let me see, we may not even need a genius to swap it out for a new one." I booted up the machine and of course the flickering doesn't happen. He told me that he'll sit me down with a genius so they can determine that the machine is indeed malfunctioning and that I will have no problem getting a replacement.

After about 20 minutes of waiting (yeah, that upset me a little, but I was being patient) a genius finally introduced himself and asked to see the machine. I booted it up for him and of course nothing was happening. He said "Just reboot the machine and try to replicate the problem for me, I'll be helping this customer so just holler over when you see it happen". It happened one second and as soon as I called him it stopped doing it. He then came over and turned the machine towards him and I heard him say "Yep, I just saw it, we'll switch it out for you with no problem". Phew... I thought I was going to walk away with the same machine.

One of the salesperson's came out with a new MBP and I did ask if I could open it in the store to make sure everything was ok. I opened up the box, booted it up and at first glance I noticed there WASN'T a single dead pixel and after starring at the screen for a good 5 minutes there wasn't any flickering either. I boxed it up, the genius was very polite and shook my hand and said "Sorry for the inconvience on the last 2 machines, hopefully we won't have to see you in here any time soon and that you'll enjoy the laptop."

So in conclusion I'm happy I toughed it out and found a machine that had no flaws and that I took the time to go back to the store to get everything sorted out. So for everyone else out there having any problems at all including one single dead pixel, take it back and make sure you receive a machine that you are happy with. You paid the extra money so deserve an excellent computer.

I honestly think if there's flickering on lines, whether it's every 5 minutes or every 5 days that it's a sign of a faulty video card and should be addressed. You should take yours back and exchange it before anything gets worse.
 
Oh piss off. Would you say that about African workers? The last generation of MBPs were also Chinese assembled, I didn't get any dead pixels or dust. These things have more to do with engineering processes than with the actual assembly labor.


From military parts to toys to food, the Chinese have a long history of taking shortcuts when it comes to manufacturing. The caution and concern is perfectly legitimate.

Come on, I know you want to do it. Just do it. The earlier the better. Saves your time debating/talking to yourself.

Care to explain why you had a 2.2 GHz SR, a 2.5 GHz Penryn and you decided to upgrade again? The new MBPs aren't any faster....
 
With all the folks having issues with multiple MBP's would it actually be worth it to just keep a MBP with a minor and consistent issue and then take it back in say 3-4 months when the workmanship issues are resolved or does that reduce the possibility of getting it swapped out over something as minor as a few dead pixels or inconsistent flicker? I'm thinking that even if I get one that appears okay at the moment that the ones produced a few months from now might be better quality and so in the long run I might be better off to get one then rather than stay with the current one.

Exactly, I've been a MacUser since Mac OS 8.5 and I've seen Apple's products come out year after year with the same quality as they offer today.

Point in question:
PowerMac Mirrored Drive Door (MDD). Noisiest fan in the history of computers. It was so bad Apple discontinued it.
Sunflower iMac. Screen wobbled and tilted, it drove a lot of customers crazy.
Aluminum PowerBook G4 (2003) Uneven gap when lid was closed, this carried all through the Macbook Pro line.
White iBook. Cheapest crappy keyboard in the history of notebooks, keys fell off all the time and hinge creaked.
23" Cinema Display. Turned pink after just months of use and had a dark vertical band down the left half of the screen.

Apple just has more customers now but quality hasn't changed. I've still seen a lot worse from other companies.

You haven't been using Macs long enough. The quality of Apple machines dropped when Steve Jobs returned and started to emphasize style over construction. I've still got a beige G3 that works perfectly from 10 years ago and know of several people still with working Macs from the Macintosh II era. They may look like boxes but they still run even when covered in dust.

To this day Apple have never made a keyboard that was as solid or as great to type on as the Apple Extended. You could deflect bullets with that and it wasn't even made of Kevlar. ;)
 
This thread is making me reconsider my plan to buy my MBP online to avoid state sales tax. It might be worth the $206.17 to get the thing in person and check for manufacturing defects before I take it home.
 
Mine is perfect, no dead pixels or dust and its very very bright.

I'm very pleased with the rest of the laptop in terms of quality, everything feels reassuringly expensive tbh.

I wish more people would post their good experiences. It is really off putting just hearing bad experiences but you have to realise that they are the minority and just loud about it.

My new MBP is on the way and I should really stop reading these threads and scaring myself ;)
 
well, i admit i check for dead pixels but i usually don't care unless there are so many together that i can see them all the time. my dell had three dead pixels but you have to search for them to find them so i don't care. my apples never had a dead pixel so far. but even if there is one or two who cares........

When removing dust from photographs it's important to not be constantly distracted by dead pixels.
 
I drove 200 miles to the apple store to get a new 1599 MB. I asked the sales person what if it has a flaw. He said they'd make it right. he goes and gets a boxed MB for me and I ask to see it. He said pay for it and it's yours to look at. No problem. I pay, I open, most of the function keys were cocked higher on right side of keys. He sent me to a genius. The genius opened another one and it was only better so he sent me to a specialist for a refund. I basicly went home with nothing. Right now I'm waiting and wondering.


My MBP also has this issue. I am ordering a replacement tomorrow from Amazon.

very true. my favorite machine of all time was the 9600/350. quality, expansion, power...nuff said.

Ask an engineer for any electronics company, and I'm fairly certain that most of them will tell you not to buy a Rev. A. product.




This includes one particular member of my family who used to design rollercoasters. :rolleyes:
 
Unibody MBP w/ bad bluetooth module

My bluetooth connection on my 3 day old MBP failed this morning and I called Apple who told me that it was likely a HW problem and I should mail it back or bring it to a repair center. Although I would hate to be without the machine for more than a day, I'm wondering if I should ask them to fix the BT problem on the current machine or ask for a DOA replacement. The machine I got (2.53 Ghz, 320 GB drive) is spectacularly blemish free. The display is perfect. Who thinks I would be taking a chance in getting a new machine with possibly other defects.
