Because it sends as SMS if imessage is off.

The issue could be one of the parties iMessage account and not the sender. If somehow the targets iMessage thread gets corrupted, the thread has to be deleted and then all is well with iMessage.

Yep I got that part... I've already stated that if I send as SMS it works fine. We have had active iMessages for years and this is the first problem. What would cause this corruption you're talking about? Is it on his end? (Based on my post above). And would we he need to do to fix it?

We have active individual iMessage, as well as a group iMessage with one other person. My iMessage pictures fail to him, but they do go through to the other person. Even in the group message. It returns to me saying it failed, but the one [unbroken] person actually does receive it.

Are you saying he needs to delete both of those conversations from Messages app? I'm not sure what else you could mean by "iMessage thread".

Thanks for the reply :D

I'm suggesting the target delete all imessage threads with your phone number. I had the same issue with spouse and when I deleted imessage threads with my phone number, imessage worked fine.

This may not be your issue, but it's worth a try.

Probably because people want to actually use the service that they find useful and that worked fine before?

Why? It does nothing but cause problems like the OP described. Its just easier to turn it off and be done with it. Unless your a fan of the blue, other than that, I don't see the point. Who does not have unlimited texting nowadays anyway?

It started having some problems, which is quite a bit different than it simply never working or something like that. You can use iMessage seamlessly across a number of Apple devices you might have. You can use it for free internationally and in places where you might not have cellular coverage but do have WiFi. Plenty of people do not have unlimited messaging so either you might not have it or people who you are messaging a lot might not and would rather use iMessage. There are plenty of reasons beyond some sort of oversimplified generalized "blue" view of it all, but this thread isn't really about that anyway.

I generally find iMessage to be more reliable than carrier text messages. In fact, just the other day I was texting with a friend and she didn't respond to something I asked, but continued the conversation. I questioned it, sent a screen shot, and she said she never got that text.

That has happened to me quite a few times with various friends, yet has never happened, not even once, with iMessage.

I like that iMessage says "delivered" underneath so you know that the message actually made it through and they can respond whenever they have time. With texts, if I get no response, I am always leary that they never even received it so I'm still wondering in the back of my mind.

So there you go... iMessage provides peace of mind.

This resolved my issue, as just recently I was unable to send pictures through iMessage from my Verizon phone to my wife who's on AT&T.

1) Turn off iMessage through System Settings.
2) Remove SIM from iPhone and turn off device.
3) Re-insert SIM and turn iPhone back up.
4) Turn on iMessage through System Settings.

Give it a try afterwards and see if you're able to send pictures again.

I talk about it here, it sounds like y'all are having the same issues, right?

I'm at wits end. I'm about to throw this goddamn phone out a window. I'm getting really ****ing pissed off now. I can't send photos and contacts to either of my parents. Not acceptable Apple!!!! And I know for a fact it has nothing to do with AT&T because it happens when everyone is on Wifi.

Are they actually receiving the messages though?

For the last week i would get some iMessages on my ipad and others on my iphone. Today around 3:00 EST i received a crap load of messages all at the same time that i already received on my ipad over the last week. Hoping my iMessage issues are done.

Interesting. These iMessage problems are recent. It's so messy considering I DEPEND on iMessage and it sucks when they get stuck in a bottle neck then come rushing to my phone all at once when they already got pushed to my other devices.

I want to share that the "delivered" status message only means that the message has made it from you to Apple's servers. It does not mean that the message was delivered to the device you sent it to. Remember that a lot can happen before that message makes it to the device it's supposed to arrive on...

Also, if an iMessage user is on a system that can't do simultaneous voice and data (Verizon and Sprint) and there is a voice connection active, iMessages will not be received until the user disconnects the voice connection. I have tested this in the reverse order too. A friend of mine sent me an iMessage, while he was on the phone, and the message didn't leave his phone until he disconnected the phone call.

This is probably the biggest issue I have with iMessage. Other than that, I am a fan of iMessage.

Fairly sure that the delivered status is there to indicate that the message has made it to at least one of the recipient's devices. Now, perhaps that's not how it always actually works, in which case it would be a bug rather than intended functionality. As for iMesaages not being sent as data while on a call on some carriers, like Verizon, that's a general voice/data limitation that isn't specific to iMessage (the potential workaround there if needed is to send the iMessage as SMS during that time, although if an iMessage is sent back that won't be received until the call ends).

I don't know what to do anymore. I'm just praying that iOS 8 will somehow magically fix this. Do you guys think a trip to the Apple Store is in order?

Can't hurt. I haven't had any trouble with iMessage in what feels like over a year. Even then the problem only lasted a few hours and could have been my phone or Verizon.

It only happens with iPhones on my family plan. Me, my parents, and my grandma. Must be an AT&T issue. Only problem with that theory is that it happens on wifi as well.

I had the problem that I would get "not delivered" for pictures even though they were delivered. I tried signing in and out and all the suggested changes. Did not fix it. Was driving me nuts.

My solution: I did a full "restore as new", and reloaded my apps etc. A pain, but always a nice spring cleaning.

The problem is gone.
