att lets u take data plan off?

Do you think if I have a razer on a line they can legally charge me for smartphone data? Of course not. That s why putting a dumb phone on allows us to take the data plan off

Assuming that ATT has the nano sim cards in stock, then they will definitely do it for you....I have confirmed with 4 ATT reps (have called to see if answers are consistent) and everything is good to go.

Hope they have them in stock as well...can't imagine them taking long to get in stock if they don't have them day 1

That's good to hear though, thanks for the fast response

I also am hoping that they have them in stock on day 1. If not, no biggie I will still have my 4S to use in the meantime.

Hmmm just thought of something else:

Think im gonna open a new line on familyplan and do this and sim swap on my dad's line. But that means his current 4S will still be 'in contract term' so until my pops gets the 2013 iPhone end of next year, ending his 4s contract and starting a new one (fullfilling the terms of at&t) it will not be unlocked by them.

Will 3rd party IMEI unlock services still unlock an 'in contract' 4S? Is this possible?

And knowing this, it'd still be more cost effective to add a line to get subsidy this year and next, right? I think resell value on "factory unlocked" phones has depreciated and flat lined to an extent, especially relative to iPhone 4 days, before 'sanctioned unlocks' became a popular thing.

You are missing out on one alternative!!!

Adding a new dummy line - $9.99 per month for .. 24 months ** But you are guaranteed an upgrade every year - one of your two lines will become eligible every year.

So that comes out to $199 + (~$240) + $36.

$475 over two years. Granted if it came down to one year - its $355ish. ($199 + $120 + $36) And you wont have to pay activation again.

True, but I'd rather stick with the upgrade or full retail. Sure, the new line way can work, but what if something comes up in the future and I need to cancel the line? The ETF is outrageous. Just a thought.

what's gonna come up in the future where you have to cancel the dummy line? it's a dummy line. just ride it out. It's no different than an early upgrade fee with a contract up front except its in installments of payments.

..Or buying the phone outright:

$325 ETF standard + $200 for phone with subsidy + $36 one time activation = $561 for the phone, no longer in contract.

Since contract is technically completed, get it unlocked from a friend who has AT&T service. $561 for an unlocked iPhone 5 that will probably go for like $700 in US seeing as how unlocked iPhone 5 is costlier in other parts of the world right now for preorder...

Any which way, it takes a chunk of your cash. This you just get the freedom of upgrading to a 2013 iPhone at the cheapest possible subsidy price.

ummm the ETF will be the same price as an early upgrade now..... its 240 over two years to pay for the line.... every month the ETF goes down 10. So lets say in 6 months you need to, it is going to be 180 to cancel which is still much less than a 250 early upgrade fee :)

You say you will have to go to ATT store to do this? Does this mean camping out at :apple: store isnt going to happen? A friend did this with the 4 launch, and it worked.

I want to go to Apple Store if possible.

When I say you need an ATT store, that is only after you purchase the phone to get the sim cards switched . Unless of course there are ATT reps at your apple store with the sim cards you need, then you can do it there.

I do know at the iPhone 4 launch, their were ATT reps, due to all the Micro-SIM changes. Wonder if I called my local store and asked if they would have ATT reps.

I would hate to wait ALL night and then not be able to do it, cause I'm not at the ATT store. Although, I could get it, and then take it to my ATT store later in the day.

yeah I remember that, and it is very possible that is the case again this year for the sim card change... I guess time will tell.

Well not sure what carrier you are talking about but AT&T's EFT is $325 over 2 years and goes down $10 a month. So after 6 months you would still be at $265. I think this approuch will really only work if you plan to stick with it for a couple of years.

yes, sorry I spoke too quickly. I guess if you think in the future you will need to cancel then its not for you.... but me personally i dont live worrying about what may occur in the future only because I could do that with everything, and I would be dictated by that fear.

I understand a lot of people think this is stupid. But a lot of people understand the upside and I am glad I have helped some people

Also - thanks! This is saving me GREAT money, because I'm not even available to buy the iPhone 4S on EARLY upgrade, I had only Full Retail Pricing.

I bought the 4S on launch day, and evidently, I'm like the only one who doesn't have early upgrades.

I get what y'all are saying. But there's an added benefit to paying up front. The purchase is made. You no long have to worry about it. You never know what is going to happen a couple of months down the road. After a while, all those monthly costs add up.

I don't need to lecture on finances, but that's why I would pay the early upgrade fee up front.

That's what I was thinking at first as well, but I think I'm going to go with adding the 2nd dummy line for the ability to upgrade every year on 1 line or the other. That makes it worth it to me.

How would switching to a family plan work? I recently switched to my own individual plan so what I did in the past (upgrade swap) can't happen anymore.

Guys, when the 4s came out ATT changed the plan to Unlimited Data for 4s. Which included HSP+. If I open a third line to get the IP5 and then switch the phone to my main line... wouldn't my main line stay at the 4S or would they add the LTE portion and cancel my unlimited data ?

Think of it this way:Imagine a friend gave you a phone for your line..... you take it to ATT and get that phones IMEI number on your line, and they change the data accordingly.

You are doing the same thing. You are taking the iphone 5, putting its IMEI on your line, and just as you did with the 4S, the unlimited plan will now become an unlimited LTE plan

Yes this thread has been a big help. I am going to be doing this as well. Good Luck with the pre order tonight!!

The only decision I have to make now is to get the white or black.... I have always loved the white and had a white 4 and 4S... but the black is so sexy now..... but on the flipside if that aluminum on the black gets scratched at all, the silver will show through and look terrible.

These are the decisions that define us :D

Good luck with your preorder as well

Clever idea, but you're not accounting for the extra taxes and fees associated with a 3rd/4th line (over 24 months that's a lot). That'd be a PITA to calculate but I'm sure that would put you over more than the OP suggests.

Unfortunately, I'm w/ the guy that said just pay it up front. =\ AT&T is a party pooper.

The taxes are pretty much negligible. They are two dollars a month AT MOST. If that is too much for someone, they probably shouldnt be buying a phone that is over 500 dollars on an early upgrade. not to be an ******* lol but its true
