We still dont know what Iphone 5 will look like.

I wonder if any of these companies is going to invest in storage space to wait & see if these paperweights, will ever be useful, someday.

It won't be a 5, it'll be either a 6 or a whole new naming scheme.

That's right, I'm calling it now.

i guess it didn't work out this time.

I have trouble feeling bad for people like this. Yes it's good to be risky sometimes but to bet your company on simple speculation like this is a pretty piss-poor business move.

Just because you're first to market doesn't mean your overall sales are going to be high.

It'd be ironic if these companies gambled, got rid of the inventory, and then Apple actually DID release this phone next year.

Really? You get this from where? From what I recall, there's only been a single iPhone named after a number (iPhone 4) and a single iPhone with an S (iPhone 3GS).

There was never an iPhone 1, 1S, 2, 2S or even an iPhone 3 (that's right, the 3G was the second iPhone).

Oh wait, the 3G was the second iPhone?! Wow, with your talents and insight, you should be working at the Pentagon! Get offline and get a job there, now!

I guess some of us were able to see the pattern forming a while ago, and the rest of you who thought it would be a 5 are just butthurt that you were wrong.

"Nobody had that kind of foresight!" Yeah, keep telling yourself that while myself and the thousands of others who called this the 4S for the past year will just nod our heads and roll our eyes.

Just because you were right, doesn't mean you've somehow got more foresight into this than the rest of us. Apple could've easily gone the other way, and that wouldn't have been considered surprising either.

Personally I was expecting the phone to be called an "iPhone 5" while still being the same hardware we got. But now the naming scheme is all screwed up. Hopefully they go back to just "iPhone"

"After three separate manufacturing partners in China sent him detailed 3D models of an iPhone"

Factories in China provide the leaked specs to these case makers in an effort to get their business.

I think the truth is right there in the article. And knowing the way Chinese do business and produce thousands of knockoff's regularly. It shouldn't be a surprise to anyone if they didn't invent fictitious 3D models on top of rampant rumors in order to get business.

Whose out the 50K, not the Chinese factories, but the people who ordered them.

I'm thinking it'll be some new naming scheme. If they call it a 5, people who are keeping track will be confused because it would be the sixth model. If they call it a 6, people who aren't paying that much attention will be confused because they never heard of a 5.

And I never claimed to have had more foresight, but it just seemed to make the most sense to me. Of course, no matter what I thought it was gonna be, I'd never stake fifty grand on the off chance I might be right.

The idea here is that the device had to have existed as a prototype at some point in time. As early as march/April this is my next... Guessed this design, unaccurately but still. My theory is that with Steve's illness he/Apple wanted a design that after his presumable passing would still generate lots of buzz/revenue for the company. Releasing the 4S was a safe way to get more sales in the meantime, and then as the next iteration release the major redesign to ensure the insane sales continue. Only my speculation of course, but this seems to make the most sense.

Still sexy. Was hoping that the ipod touch would get this larger design, not the exact same thing in and out as last year. They did put out a new hideous white model though.

Did I miss something. At no point did I read about anyone complaining. AND the article points out that Hard Candy benefitted greatly from betting on rumors.

Why would anyone bash these companies for making gambles that could not only pay out huge but also to bring us great products. They aren't complaining. The article was written about them and how they do business. They didn't go to business week and beg for an article to tell the world they bet their company on a rumor.

phone designs have a life of 2-3 years like car model years with minor changes. the 4S was always the model for this year and there is another team at apple that has been designing the next model since 2010 or earlier. the leaks were probably for the 2012 model that is still in engineering

He never said they were complaining. He just said he doesn't feel sorry for them. And seeing as how, like you said, they weren't asking for pity, I'd say he's in the right not to feel bad for them.

It would have made just as much sense to call it the iphone 4G (except that it doesn't have 4G hahahaha).

And you do realize that butthurt is a reference to anal rape, rigth? You think everyone who expected apple to release the iphone 5 after the iphone 4 feel like the victims of anal rape?

The iphone 5 will be out next year, and you've already seen what it will look like. These cases will fit, too.

I'm guessing that the next iPhone will be called iPhone 4GS. Still same design but with LTE. The next after that (7th-gen), the might call it iPhone 5 cause it's weird to call it iPhone 7.

2012 = A6, iOS6, iPhone 4GS
2013 = A7, iOS7, iPhone 5

I was just thinking about this actually. Shame that these case makers are out the money, but hey...they took a gamble and it didn't pay off. I love my 4S, but I was really hoping for a 5.

Ps: Siri totally rocks. I asked her if she'd sleep with me, and it gave me the locations of the nearest escort services. I laughed out loud. Totally genius and worth the upgrade

Yes, Noah Webster, I'm aware of what "butthurt" means. Now define "metaphor." :)

Also, I'll bet you fifty bucks the next iPhone won't be called the 5 and that these cases won't be an exact fit. Too many things change in a year's time: phones get thinner, designs change, etc.

I would not be surprised if there is a cottage industry setup to scam case makers and other people who could gain financially from supposedly secret information from Apple.

I also wouldn't be surprised if Apple was throwing around some disinformation too (I doubt they're actively trying to achieve the goal of making case vendors waste money, though).

I think the only problem with that would be the branding. Two years with a 4 in the name is pushing it, but adding the "S" is like saying it's the "Special Edition." But to the random consumer, having another model with a 4 might be really confusing.

Someone at my work already referred to the 4S as the 4G...

I can get behind that. I'm just curious as to why the 2012 iPhone design was being rumored so far in advance then. You never saw iPhone 4 rumors ahead of the 3GS launch. This design that never came to be seemed to take on the shape of iPad 2 which made sense. Either way I think it's a little too premature to speculate on the next iPhone when the current one is being released today.
