Saying the next version won't be the 5 is ridiculous. The only reason they skipped from the original to 3G is because that model upgraded to the 3G network. Since they've already had two "4" models, it wouldn't make sense to use that number yet again even if the next one is 4G (especially since the next one will be a new case design), and there simply isn't any reason to skip 5 and go to 6.

hahaha, all these "new design" cases made me laugh. Why change the shape so soon when they just made a drastic change. Granted the iPad did that within one revision but Apple was hailing this new iPhone 4 look to be quintessential industrial design made sleek.

never really had any thoughts it would go this way anyway.

Are cases that big of a business? To me it just seems like too much of a waste of energy and resources to do all this massive planning ahead just to sell a 3rd party products such as cases.

anyone consider the fact that maybe apple was sniffing out its leaks?

No way. Rumors that go beyond what will actually be released that make it seem like a disappointment in comparison are Apple's worst nightmare. If they were going to leak rumors about a product, they would mislead by underpromising.

And if it doesn't?

Then it doesn't. I hardly think that $50K is the company's entire bankroll. It was a gamble, they lost. I have to assume that a responsible company only risked what they were willing to lose.

Not really ....

For starters, Apple often sells their OWN case products for their devices, so they have no vested interest in making sure 3rd. party case designers get an early jump on case production. (EG. the rubber bumper cases for the iPhone 4)

Apple's stance seems pretty simple: Let us RELEASE the product first, and THEN you guys get your hands on one of the final products and design your accessories around it.

Case makers who are so desperate to launch products faster do so completely at their own risk (and yes, they're going to take chances - knowing the risks involved, because they stand to make serious $'s if they've got one of the only available cases for a new phone on launch day).

IMO, it's still not out of the realm of possibility that the rumored iPhone 5 they designed those early cases for will turn out to be accurate as the phone released *next* year. Maybe they were simply seeing very early prototypes of the next gen. phone and they've simply produced a product way too early?

Weird. I always thought that they gave the manufacturers some kind of heads up. They should, and granted that means there would be leaks, but still you don't need to be a butthead and make these companies guess and then go belly up if they get it wrong.

Why in the world would Apple create a tapered iPhone design? Think about it. Trying to press the side buttons while holding it would be ridiculous. Just to turn the volume up or down while holding it with one hand would consist of actually sliding the phone to the tip of the fingers to be able to press anything, which could cause people to drop the phone constantly. The tapered the design on an iPad however is different, since people are constantly using two hands.

Plus, the current iPhone design is a marble that's going to last for a couple generations like the awesome Mac Pro design. Why make any drastic ridiculous changes like that.

I have trouble feeling bad for people like this. Yes it's good to be risky sometimes but to bet your company on simple speculation like this is a pretty piss-poor business move.

Just because you're first to market doesn't mean your overall sales are going to be high.
"Bet your company"?? $50k is probably 1 week's payroll.

Obviously the real reason why Apple doesn't leak their next gen design to case makers is because they don't want case makers leaking it to the public. Which then results in people not buying the current product and Apple losing money. This has already been officially stated by Jobs, and Apple. I don't think it has anything to do with Apple simply wanting to release their cases, or product first.

Who actually read the article?

references to this guy "betting the farm" are ridiculous. He spent $50,000 on a speculative investment based on evidence.

From the article...
"He expects annual revenues to pass $50 million by 2013."

This is comparable to my boss taking a prospective client out to dinner.

Is there so much money in the case game that companies would really risk millions on completely unverified information? That seems like a gamble that might pay out one time in five.

The iPad was most definitely not the first to market. There have been enough tablets released prior to the iPad to sink an aircraft carrier.

The iPad was the first to enjoy wide mainstream adoption. Basically everything before it sucked. And looking at recent tablet sales data, it looks like everything else after it sucked too (apart from the iPad 2, naturally).

I am willing to bet there was an iphone 5 in the works but it just wasn't ready on time.. Apple is not going to delay all this time over siri or an 8mp camera.. or the icloude which was presented back in the spring. I say there will be an iphone 5 early next year due to the high demand, I will be keeping my 3GS with a better tapared design untill then;)

Maybe not, but it seemed like the most likely scenario. Hell, I was calling it last year and laughing it up as one "analyst" after another said it was gonna be a redesigned iPhone 5.

Think about it like this: if Apple didn't release a 4S and went straight to a 5, it would kinda make the 3GS some weird bastard child of the Apple line. It just seemed right to do a 4S.

To me the most likely scenario was that the 3Gs had only been an intermediate name to get the numbering correct. I still don't know what the people at Apple were thinking when they screwed the numbering up again and called this 4s. What can the next one possibly be called?
I now think that their plan is to drop the numbering completely and just call it "iPhone" and only in spec sheets and such specify with "(Xth gen)" like they do with the iPods.

Making a business decision on rumors that can cost your company a large amount of money is dumb.
