With all respect to the fact that the bumper on this thread is not a "knock-off" and has sweet buttons...

Doesn't this remind people of the sword?

sword will apparently run you 1/3 - 1/5 of the price depending on what they decide.

I mean... all that money for a cool button layout? What else makes this aluminum case much better than the other aluminum case?

I bought the sword and it absolutly mullered my reception worst case I have ever owned but also the best looking! was gutted.

If someone can prove this case doesnt affect reception with a field test then I would be happy to buy this case.

I'll stick with my element vapor pro.

but it does look like a deff cleave + vapor together. If its under $50 then perfect.

Always great to have a similiar product/ good substitute to drive down the price of another similiar product. Benefits the consumers :)

I'm really liking this case Scary Gay Dad. Where do you think I can purchase one? I went to Amazon, and they have old iCases. I was hoping to get the Draco, but there's too many reviews of signal loss. What are the palette of colors offered? How much?

If these are not made of aluminum, are they then made of metal? Ugghh!

From the kickstarter page:

How do I order a case if the projects over?

If you've missed the project deadline for KickStarter there's no other way to pledge and receive the product at the reduced price since the projects closed.. We will be moving the product into retail channels after delivery to our backers. If you'd like to sign-up to know when that happens please see our Retail Pre-Launch page.

Just got a response from Jason Valalik:
Jason Valalik said:
This isn't the retail channel you signed up to be notified about. The case being sold on amazon were some prototype parts that were made as an early trial run. They aren't final production pieces.

Here's another post for you bozos to downvote.

When asked about when this will be available in retail and what design differences we can expect:

Jason Valalik said:
We are shooting for mid January. There could be significant differences and honestly can't make any promises around fit.

Plus the logo design is different than the final one.

Sounding fishy to me.

Especially opening a new thread to avoid this one?

I kind of regret registering an account here as "SCARY GAY DAD."

It just sounds so...creepy...especially when someone addresses you in a matter-of-factly manner and takes the time to correct my stylized all-caps username.

Plus, I'm none of the above -- I'm not scary, gay, or a father.

I ordered one. For science.

So are downvotes like people's way of saying thanks for taking initiative on this case? I kind of want to post a review, but this forum seems pretty $h1ity. I'll let someone else be a martyr and post a review.

@SGD Relax mate, dont let it get you down. I look forward to your review. Useless posts should be down-voted IMHO, Im not referring to your posts. cheers :D

I am not down. More like amazed.

It takes time to write an in-depth review, so it doesn't make sense to write one if people don't want one.

People just aren't the brightest out there, just ignore it. No amount of questioning will help them spawn a spare brain cell.

Onto the topic at hand... I'd pretty much kill for a black one. Just need to wait until they hit retail. Rather not order a prototype from Amazon :\

There may be plenty of folks who want a review and just dont know how to up/down vote....or are on their mobiles and cant vote.....cheers :)

Okay, I decided to post a review mainly to get this company's attention. There are some pros and cons to this bumper case, and the company should fix the cons. Also, I think a plastic version of this case should be made. More on this later.

RECEPTION:

You first have to know that my 4S is unlocked on the T-Mobile network. I have noticed that without any case, antennagate still exists (3-4 bars will drop). I have bought 2 iPhones -- one from Apple's website and another from Apple's retail store -- and BOTH do the same thing. This does not happen with any other iPhone on any other carrier, so this leads me to believe that antennagate has not been resolved if you are on T-Mobile. Why? I have no idea, but it's really annoying and is a main reason why I started looking for a case (cases resolved antennagate for the iPhone 4).

With that said, the Graft Leverage bumper case fixes my antenna issue. The Mindplar i+Case does not, but the rate of bars dropping does is not made faster (if anything, it seems slower, but this could be a placebo effect). Since I am on T-Mobile, I can not say if reception issues exist if you are on AT&T, Verizon, or Sprint. If anyone has this case and is on one of the three Apple-authorized carrier, please let us know how your reception is.

Also, if this case was made with plastic, there would absolutely be no reception issue with T-Mobile. Like with my plastic Graft Leverage case.

APPEARANCE:

You've already seen the photos on page 1. Here are more:

Here are mine:

Taste is personal, but I think this is by far the best looking case. I like the Graft Leverage as well, but I find it to be a little too chunky and bulky for my liking. The Graft Leverage does garner a LOT of positive comments though (I do have the chrome lever, so the shine does attract attention though); we'll see how the Mindplar i+Case does in public.

QUALITY:

The attention to external detail is what really makes this case appear to be of exceptional quality. Just look at these integrated buttons:

SPQho.jpg

I really love how the vibrate switch lines up flush with the top lateral line. This is what I call great design. In my photo above, the switch is set to have sound; if set to vibrate, the switch now lines up flush with the bottom lateral line.

I also got to say that I really love the rocker style volume buttons as well.

All the buttons feel great as well and are really responsive.

However...

We've established that the external quality is amazing. One of my gripes is that while the edges of the 2 halves of the case completely overlap out of the box, when applied on the iPhone, this is no longer the case (no pun intended). The tighter the screws, the further apart the overlap, so I made sure not to tighten the screws too much to minimize this. Note how the edges are nice and tight in the corners though -- that is because that is where the 4 screws are.

The designers may not have taken into account the way aluminum bends/warps when it is tighten. Obviously, adding screw joints in the middle of these edges would keep these edges completely overlapping, but that may detract from the appearance too much. Another alternative is to use a stiffer metal that won't bend as easily. Or a really stiff plastic.

Or maybe, the case isn't cut big enough for the iPhone, hence the bulging edges. If that's the case, that's pretty horrible, and I have to wonder if I got a defective case or if this is case of pre-production blues.

PROTECTION:

There is lay for the back but none for the front. I suspect this was for appearance reasons. Note this FAQ on kickstarter:

How does the bumper protect the phone?

Most falls typically end up striking the edge of the phone. It's very difficult to drop a phone parallel to a surface and land flat. Most screen cracks occur because of a point load on the perimeter.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3SDy_VO9uY
You'll even see in the video above that when the screen cracked there was a point load on the edge that caused it.

thanks
Obviously, cases are a personal choice between protection and appearance. For me, appearance is most important. Only you can decide for yourself if you want an Otterbox, Graft Leverage, or a Mindplar i+Case.

EASE OF ASSEMBLY:

It's easy. I'll let the photos do the talking.

eNkZx.jpg

Just be careful with the screws -- they are VERY SMALL. They give you 6 in case you lose some.

ANYTHING ELSE?

Yes. You may have noticed the black foam inside the case in one of the photos. And you would think, as did I, that it's to stop critical areas of the antenna band from touching the aluminum. But upon further examination, it doesn't. The antenna band ONLY makes contact with the case on the corners. The sides are actually recessed and are essentially filled with foam so that it's flush with the corners. That means that if you take the foam out, the sides STILL won't be touching the antenna band. LOLWTF?! What is the whole point of the foam then??? Observe:

diKyu.jpg

The fit inside is also VERY tight. If you have any wraps on the antenna band, it will not fit (I had to take my iColorWrap off). However, since the case does not bleed into the glass edges, and front and back screen protectors can remain.

The headphone jack opening is also cut to the EXACT same specs as that on the iPhone. That means if you have a headphone/IEM/earbud with a jack that is thicker than that of the Apple earbuds, it's not going to fit. An option is to get an adapter, but that probably gets annoying fast.

OVERALL SCORE:

Does it preserve reception: With T-Mobile, no. With other carriers, unknown.
Appearance: 9/10
Quality: If the edges not completely overlapping are fixed, 9/10; currently, it is 7/10 (you may consider the warping edges to be minor)
Protection: Protects everything except the front.
Ease of assembly: 8/10 (I find it fun to assemble as well)

CLOSING THOUGHTS:

* This is an amazing looking case with a minor/moderate flaw with the warping edges. Do not tighten the screws too much to minimize this.

* If you're on T-Mobile, your reception issues will continue. It doesn't make it worse though, and may possibly mitigate slightly, but nonetheless remain. On other carriers, I have no idea if reception is affected.

* Mindplar,
PLEASE MAKE A TOUGH PLASTIC VERSION OF THIS TO FIX THE BUCKLING EDGES AND T-MOBILE RECEPTION ISSUES.

Freaking awesome review SGD.

Needless to say though, now I'll pass... simply cannot risk any reception issues as is plus I'd rather keep a wrap on the 4S to keep it all shiny and new underneath :p

Thanks for the review. I cancelled my pledge and no regrets but I rather wait for second phase. It looks like a 3GS.
