You are 100% on those lightning cables. I've gone through countless ones.

Strange. I am still using the first lightning cable I got with my iPhone 5. Have since gotten a 5s and a 6 and just left their cables in the box as spares. My daughter has an iPad Mini that is still on its first cable and it is 2.5 years old. My wife has an iPhone 6 and an iPad Mini that are both nearly a year old and still on their original cables. What do folks do with their cables that causes this corrosion? I can't imagine.

Just you wait... that's how it starts.

Next thing you know, you see calls to other numbers you can't recall making, and odd (inappropriate) sites left open on Safari. Then it starts ignoring calls from your wife/girlfriend...

Then it starts smoking and hanging out with USB-C devices...

It's all downhill from there... And it all started with one. Little. Kink... :eek:o_O

I bought a Moshi cable, and the lightning end connectors rotted, and it would get hot, and wouldn't charge consistently. I talked with their warranty department, and they said that I had to produce the receipt for warranty claims, no way around it.

I asked them if they saved all of the receipts for every little thing they had ever purchased, and they adamantly demanded a receipt for replacement. No excuses, no reasoning with them.

That's the last Moshi product I'll ever buy. It was a really cool cable too. Nice aluminum covered ends, and felt durable. All except the ends. And they called that a 'Premium Cable'...

Nice...

I think companies require a receipt for this specifically BECAUSE nobody keeps them, so this is an easy way out of most warranty claims.

I know I don't tend to keep receipts for things under $50 once I'm sure it works and I know I won't returning it.

I personally wish Apple didn't carry Belkin and that they didn't get reported on. Anything Belkin I've bought has been terrible. I bought a USB hub that stopped working after a few months, and a router that only seemed to allow 10 or so connections at once across all devices. So absolutely no torrenting or gaming, basically.
You seemed to have better luck than I have had. I bought a few Belkin things (usb hub, card reader, laptop cooler stand), the first two stopped working within a month, the laptop stand started making odd noises within 2 weeks but lasted only a couple months. I don't think I've experienced a more consistently terrible mainstream electronics brand like this since Mad Catz.

Well, so I guess it goes without saying, I avoid Moshi products from then on, and, perhaps y'all should too?

It was a bogus thing to do. I even said that Apple replaces their bad cables, to which the youngish tech I was talking to said 'Well, we're not Apple'. Yeah, no kidding...

At least their Lightning cables, so far, seem to not rot... Not like the Moshi POS I got stuck with...

I'm with you. I think I've only had one charging cord go bad by the USB end and it was for a 2008 MBP. I think people must yank them out by the cord instead of grabbing the end. I keep most of my charging cords in my purse and use them on the road, in hotels, on the plane, etc. I use a mix of the original Apple cords and the Amazon Apple-certified cords. They are great and don't give me issues. Never heard of or experienced corrosion. Maybe because I don't live in a humid place?

I did have an Apple USB-Lightning cable go bad. It had actually started arching and in the end, many of the contacts were corroded below the level of the plastic surrounding the contacts.

Apple Genius Bar folks took it, looked at it, and said 'Be right back', and brought a new boxed cable, took the cable out of the box and gave it to me, and I was on my way. Now, Moshi...

But anyway...

Interesting idea, but with the LIGHTNING Cable, they tend to corrode, in my experience, on the lightning port side. Every cable I have purchased at the APPLE STORE or on APPLES website, every single one has corrosion on the lightning prongs.

The connector is made of a high grade of stainless steel and the connector surfaces are gold plated. You can corrode both, but that kind of environment is also very bad for humans. How is your health holding up?

Here is the photo per our conversation. That's about the best focus I could get.

What are you people doing with your cables?! I must just be very lucky and every cable I've ever owned has just been among the exceptionally made ones...

I've never had any Apple cable I've owned fail, corrode, fray, etc. from iBook/PowerBook/MacBook Pro/30-pin/lightning cables. Nothing.

You are very lucky. Considering that this "young person" <~ presumptuous) with two children has gone through new cables for fraying, MagSafe, lightning, and 30 pin tips failing on almost all the devices you have listed that I too have owned over the years. Perhaps the kids are putting them through their paces, more than usual, or traveling with these wires daily while commuting for work across the country is too much.
