I have had bad luck with HP, the ink is expensive and reliablity of the scanner lamps are poor - good for no more than 18 months based on a few scan per day. Seems to be a basic HP problem across multiple models. We will still get HP if a user insists but they fail like clockwork. Brother, Canon and Epson seem to have much better reliablity (although Epson ink cost per page is high). Lexmark seem ok too, for light duty applications (very cheap ink but slightly lower quality output).

Some Epson printers have very low ink costs. Check out the models with the large cartridges. I have a WorkForce 845, and the ink costs are very reasonable. After 1.5 years, I've just started my 3rd B/W cartridge and 2nd color cartridges. Great print quality also.

Recently replaced my nine-year-old HP Photosmart with an HP Envy 120.....oh,wow, it's too cool for words! NO hassle in setting up with my wireless network and now I can print from any of my devices: computers, iPads, iPhone. It scans and copies, too. I"m a happy camper!

I love my brother mfc -990 cw, I have had it for about 3 years, prior to that I used a HP it was a fantastic printer which lived out a 8 year timespan and saw me grow up. But HP lag in software updates, i found brother frequently update their drivers for the mac every time a new version of OSX comes out.

Epson WF545

I will never buy another HP...no support. I bought an Epson Workforce 545 all-in-one and it works great. I thought something was wrong with it when I first got it but the trouble was with the Belkin router, not the printer. I bought a Netgear 150 router and it works flawlessly now with my Macbook Pro laptop via wifi.

Pretty much every currently available printer will work on a Mac.

I had a HP printer for around 18 months and the paper feed was starting to be rather hit and miss. Prior to this I had a HP printer that gave me almost 6 years trouble free service.

In light of the paper feed issues with my last HP printer, I purchased a Brother MFC-J825DW and its a lot better printer I find than the HP printer it replaces.

The compatible inks are really cheap, it has a really good and logically laid out UI and its touchscreen.

It has a front paper tray system which you pull out completely from the printer, this then pushes fully into the printer so there's nothing sticking from the front of the printer.

Its quiet.

Scan, print and copy quality are slightly better than my HP printer.

It has AirPrint capability too. And its WIFI.
