I tried to do the same thing earlier this week but arrived too late. Totally random but if you "make the cut" this morning any chance you'd consider buying a second one? :)

Even if Apple doesn't want to reinstate a policy of not allowing cash purchases, I wonder if they could legally do two separate lines at each location, one for credit card transactions and one for cash transactions, and then serve both independently.

They'd need to cut out prepaid credit cards too.

I wonder if the can legally require SSNs with cash purchases?

That would eliminate non scalpers.

And I don't think so with privacy laws, and even if they could, they never would want to assume the legal obligation of having to protect those numbers.

Um, no.

So anyone that's not a citizen can't buy an iPad? Tell that to all the europeans who flew over here for launch day. What about all the legal residents who have a legitimate interest for their personal use?

I was at the Meatpacking store today to get a case for my iPad 2, and casually asked the Apple salesperson about the line on Friday, and he said it was a mess and a total zoo. Forget the Fifth Ave. and Soho Stores...

if you are going that early and are willing to stand until 9AM, your best bet is in NJ, LI or CT...30 min drive, but if you show up before 5ish, you will be one of the first 5 people inline, with no 'mafia-oriented scalpers' in sight. GL

Just came back empty handed from UWS store. Got there at 5:50AM-already 80 people ahead of me. You gotta get there around midnight. People camped from midnight and still could not get tickets!

I had no idea the situation was that bad. And if you think about it, there's no way Apple can come up with a policy to stop this kind of activity.

Do what they did for the 3G Ipad 1, No Cash Sales, Two per Credit/Debit. I was at the 5th Avenue store for the 3G launch last year. An Apple employee came down the line and said Credit/Debit only. Cleared a lot of people of the line.

I was going to start a thread but this one should do the job. It would be helpful if anyone who gets an iPad in NYC posts all the details of where they got it etc or even if anyone is walking past a store, an update on the queues.

Thanks.

Why not just require a credit check too for the "privilege" of being able to purchase a new item from Apple? Sicko

Why not just sell them directly to Hong Kong and skip the NYC middlemen?

Apple has to decide if their lines are for retail customers or a wholesale distribution channel to China.

"Drive"? New Yorkers don't have cars. Many of the suburban stores aren't near public transit. White Plains, Greenwich and Stamford are notable exceptions. But it's not clear how much stock they get.
