This is ridiculous. Why do most software require a subscription? Do they think of themselves as Time or WSJ?

The App Store is filled with apps made by people that spend a few hours putting together some random clone of something else that’s already available by a real developer, trying to charge $5.99/month despite never actually doing anything to improve the app, which will then fall stagnant after a year because they passed their CS 101 course or their MacBook stopped getting MacOS updates so they can’t use Xcode anymore.

The problem is that there’s so many stupid users out there that don’t know any better that end up falling for these sham apps that people are making a profit off of it, which just encourages others to make the next garbage app.
 
Is there one app left that doesn’t have a premium subscription?

I'm talking about the iPhone / iPad here, but subs are actually good for me, since everything moved subscription I have completely stopped spending money on apps... I used to buy tons of random apps because they used to cost, like, $2.99 or something... Heck, sometimes, I'd even pay $9.99 for a productivity app... I woudn't say it was an addiction as such, but I'd spend upwards of $100 or even up to $200 a year on various applications and stupid little games for my iPhone and iPad. You know the ones that let you pay to remove ads... Rope And Fly, Ninja Fruits, those iffy tower defence games etc.... It's amazing what one ends up buying when one spend an hour on a train twice a day.

But basically, since one can't seem to actually, properly purchase anything any more I have seen my app expendature drop to zero.. literally and actually. The last app I bought was Omnifocus 3 somewhere back in 2019. I have let all my other stuff like WeekCal and so on lapse once they shifted to the PayPerMonth model.

Currently I have three app subscriptions that I don't see changing or expanding: DropBox, Adobe and Office 365. All needed for actual, paying work.

Exactly. This is a fantastic app, but the pricing is ridiculously expensive. I would stayed permanently subscribed for a reasonable amount.. but I don't fly enough to justify the exorbitant cost. So I have to stop/start short subscriptions every time. They would probably get more money out of me with a sensibly priced yearly plan.
 
no need to use Carrot Weather anymore either as the Apple Weather App has really gotten great in iOS/iPadOS 17
Me when I lie. Meteorologist here — Apple Weather is horrid if you live anywhere where forecasts bust from time to time.

Cold front arrived a little early? Weather models certainly aren’t known to underestimate the forward motion of cool air. (Sarcasm.) Fear not; Apple Weather will assume its forecast is correct and report the current temperature as much as 20° over local observed air temperatures until the forecast says the cold front arrived. I’ve personally witnessed that.

Or a surprise cloudy/rainy day when the forecast was sunny — that’ll hold temperatures down and the forecast will never line back up like it would for the “early cold front” scenario mentioned above. I’ve personally witnessed that, too: Apple Weather consistently reported the current temperature as 10–17° warmer than actual, all day long.

All automated weather apps running forecasts with zero human oversight will have issues at times, but failing to account for observations seemingly at all is amateur hour.

Carrot weather is a trial. I use other apps that are a lot more efficient in the free
Flighty App is another one of those apps that is costly. so many of those around
 
People please stop renting apps. You only encourage more of this. Make the developers earn their money by improving their product.
I said that >10 years ago. It had zero effect and subscription models are here to stay (until something else appears that allows even more customer milking).

Just wondering: what makes the mentioned apps the „BEST APPS“? Has there been some kind of independent evaluation or have developers paid good money for this award?

Flighty alone makes about $200k per MONTH (see Sensor Tower for analytics details) or $2.5m per year in revenue. Apple's cut from that is $30k/month or $360k/year at a 15% cut.

It's basically free money to Apple. They have to do NOTHING (the App Store and its payments to developers is all just completely automated now) and that money just flows in.

The subscription model is working just fine for both Flighty AND Apple. That's why they keep doing it and refuse to change.

NOTE: It's important to state that does Flighty have massive costs. Just the costs for the API's for the flight data alone is astronomically high. They also have a staff... devs, customer service, product and marketing people, and founders/investors. They all need to get paid. They're a small team, but still have a payroll and a lot of monthly costs. AND I know some ultra-frequent flyers and lots of flight crew and flight attendants depend heavily on Flighty. So they clearly have a market that finds the app valuable enough to pay high costs for. Just because it's not worth it to you doesn't mean anything.... one man's trash is another man's treasure.

Good point. You do realize that if you lose your job you still own nothing and rent everything. So hopefully you have enough funds to keep paying said rent.

I don't believe the debate is about paying for something, just not every god damned week, month, or year! One time purchases are fine, if the app is worth it.

Slopes is brilliant and probably one of my favourite apps. Been using it since it was first developed and it’s always impressive to see how it improves with every iteration. I’m normally quite anti subscription models but as people often only ski one or two weeks a year, I can see the benefits of only ‘renting’ the premium features for those weeks you use the app.

My only complaint is actually a Garmin one as Garmin apis don’t allow third part access to all the data properly and slopes can’t track the lift vs run data that it can when you use an Apple Watch. Yes I could wear my Apple Watch again but I hate the daily charging, extra cables etc when I can get a week out of my Fenix without an issue.
 
Holy hell, £50 and it doesn’t even come with the magsafe charger!
I've had one of these for a year. It's really good.

Concerning watchOS 10. After the upgrade to iOS 17 and watchOS 10, I discovered that I cannot scroll through the watch faces on Watch. In the Watch App, the watch faces it shows that I should be able to see, are missing some of the images inside of the watch faces.
Is this just me????
