Best Backpacks/Carrying Cases for MBP?

Long time lurker, first time poster. I registered today because I felt compelled to help pimp Tom Bihn's bags. He is local to the Seattle area and the bags are double-stitched and have lifetime warranties on defects. They are real people making real bags. I like that there is not a tag that says "Made in China" (even though the computer is). Since I live close enough, I can actually visit the store. The woman there helped me piece a bag together from another bag because I didn't like the modular straps on the bag I liked. She simply changed it with another bag and voila! Great service.
Solid construction and locally made. Good stuff.

I'm also doing this research and I found this backpack, and I'm really tempted to buy it. Seems perfect, to me.
I will have to agree with using a laptop sleeve since that would offer you the ability to drop it in any bag you would like. Plus, if you just want to tote your laptop only, you can just carry around the sleeve. 😀
anyone use a north face backpack with their macbook? im considering getting either the north face surge or recon. this will help protect my my laptop in addition to its sleeve. im also going to college next year too, so i figure im going to want to carry my laptop with me a lot.

I have the backpack that BlizZ10 has and it works great, but another one I would recommend if you are open to some unique ideas is the Osiris G Bag.
Built in speakers on the sides powered by 12 AA batteries. I love playing it in the hallways at school and seeing people's reactions. Would be great to hook up a laptop to.

i don't see why people want to pay extra for the waterfield bags. is it because they want people to know they paid more?
the marware bags fit just as well, cost about 40% less, and also have handles in case you have a lot of things on your shoulder and you want to carry it by hand
the only thing i don't like about the marware sportfolio bags is that the metal clasps for the shoulder strap squeak (metal against metal)
i would like to try the booq bags (especially the XL90) but they are also incredibly expensive

I don't think its so much that people like giving other people money rather than they want a quality product and make the common mistake of price = quality. After all, there's no reliable way to test the quality of a backpack or bag for yourself when all you have is a few jpegs provided by the manufacturer.

good point. my friend got the sf bags for the macbook 15" because marware hadn't came out with their new line of sportfolio. he lucked out and found them cheap on ebay, but he still paid roughly $80 while i paid roughly $40. overall, i don't see the sfbags as being superior, especially when they lack a handle for versatile carrying.
another marware i would like to try is their CEO leather case, which has a very professional look, but i don't think the shoulder strap would be particular comfortable.

Do you have pictures? It looks big, but I can't tell how big it looks on a person...
If you already have a sleeve just go with the recon, which doesn't really have "padding." By padding TNF means the back of the backpack. The surge has real padding, but if you have a sleeve, you don't need that.
I use a Brenthaven Duo 15 backpack, with an Incase sleeve for my Blackbook. The backpack padding is really good, but the sleeve is necessary for a snug fit. There isn't much room for books, but the protection is top notch.

I second this. I use the Considerable Embarrassment by Crumpler. Sturdy, well padded, very comfortable.
There was a similar thread so I didn't spend the time to see if anyone else recommended the Tom Binh Vertical Brain Cell. Compared to other "upscale" or rather expensive laptop bags, I found this one to be worth the price as it offers superior protection and custom size for my SR MBP.
