Bestbuy is taking reservations if you put a $100 down, but they cant gauruntee when it will arrive. i picked this option because it couldn't be worst than the 3-4 week apple.com wait. or could it????..

In the end Apple clowned us with no initial reservations, making us go store to store waiting in long lines with 200 strong, when the retailer knew they only had 5 in stock.. i really got punked..

Just order from apple.com. The bb clowns said you can make a deposit but there is no guarantee you'll ever get one. Why go through a middleman? With apple you'll definitely get it.

I dont really see this as any better than calling every store around until they get it. If you are the 47th to reserve today, and best buy get lets say 10 a week, you wont get one until 4 weeks from now. But who knows really.

While I was waiting to see if Apple would solve the problems I had yesterday (thankfully they were able to), I called my local BB. I was told that I would be guaranteed one if I put down the deposit. If I couldn't get one, I would be refunded with a gift card which I could then cash to get my $$ back.

No date no sale. They can't even estimate a date.

I'm not even sure if they honor that reservation. They are not going to send a potential new customer away because the iPad is reserved. With the 100 deposit they have your business anyway so they sell the iPad and let you wait because you will definitely buy from them since you gave them your 100 bucks already.

    I would never do this.

It doesn't seem like all Best Buy's are doing this. I just called one and they said they heard about it, but their store in particular is not partaking in the "$100 deposit for an iPad" program.

So this is an YMMV thing.

This is a BB/Apple concoction so if you trust Apple take the risk.

Please post the evidence to support your statement of collusion between Apple & Best Buy in this deposit arrangement.

I got to my Best Buy At 5:05pm yesterday. They offered me the option to reserve it. They charged me $100 dollars and i had to write my name and number on an ipad flyer. They told me they would call me in 24 hours or early next week. I gave them a guft card to use, and they gave me a new gift card for $100 dollars. LOL!!!

Anyway, now I have a reservation at that Best Buy and if I find it at another best buy I can still use my $100 dollars. I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt and will wait till next week before I start searching.

The manager at BB offered everyone the same here when they ran out of tickets yesterday at 4:30.

Walked a block away and got one from an apple authorized store.

I tried to get one on launch day and my best buy only received 15. Since I didn't get one and I heard that Apple was quoting 2 weeks to ship, I reserved one.

A best buy employee that I spoke with said they would be expecting over 100 within the next 4 days, but who knows. I still think it will be faster than buying straight from Apple.

The people saying "I would never do this" or "sounds shady" or things like that.. make no sense. There's NOTHING to lose. If you get it elsewhere, you RETURN THE GIFT CARD.

As far as them not being able to guarantee when... umm yes, they are not fortune tellers. Very few things are GUARANTEED.

Order online. Cancel the order if you find one locally before the online order ships. I cancelled my online order yesterday when I got to the front of the line at the Apple Store.

Or I could just go to my local Best Buy. I just returned from there and they had a whole cage full. I thought at first it MUST be the first iPad, but then saw the front of the box....iPad 2 in white. They seemed to have every size in both colors, probably 50+. Surely it isn't just our store that's like this?

    yes

If I hadn't gotten the 3-5 day shipping estimate I would have done the $100 at Best Buy for sure. Go for it!

I was 25th reserving at my best buy, so I'm cautiously optimistic I'll get it Monday. They got 30 in this morning but sold out very quickly.
