The sad part is they don't get any incentives at all on sales. No bonuses or anything. I am speaking as someone who worked on the sales floor and also as a Manager for them. ( I am now in a much better place) Sales reps that come in can't even offer them kickbacks or rewards for selling their products.
Instead of taking th enormal approach people have here and saying their entire staff is terrible I will say this. What it is is too much roll over on staff. They pay too little to employees with no incentives and people work there for a bit and move on. However you deffinitely do get some guys that do know their stuff, but I think that really holds true for almost most large retailers.

I work in a computer retail store, you are right. I am a Sales Manager, so I make decent money, but the rest of the sales people are on comission, or if they don't make enough they get a base wage. Some of them don't try hard enough so they are always making the base.
The markup on macs are the same, pretty much, so in my store whther they sell a base macbook or a 17" mbp, they make about the same money...They don't make their money on any computer, it's in the accessories, like it is for any business. Some people don't know what they are talking about, but some do. Also, sometimes customers don't know they are talking about either..They read too many opinions online and get them all mixed up and then they think we are the dumb ones. I had a customer in last week who said macs weren't any good because there was no software out there for mac...See what I mean?
I don't buy my computers/computer parts online, I support the local business.
