Excellent strategy. A lot of uninformed users out there. But once you get the product in their hands, you can bet that's a pair of hands that won't bother picking up the competitions device. They will see how good it really is and realize there is no need to buy the competition. It's only the blind Apple followers that would pay for and iPad when they get something like the Galaxy Tab for "free." The average person who is looking at getting a tablet will stick with the Tab. Similar strategy to the Galaxy S when it first came out, and now it's the best selling Android device of all time.

Theres a difference between buying a 600$ tv and getting a crappy tablet free and buying a 20,000$ car and getting a quality tablet free. :apple:
Was Hyundai giving that with all cars? Because I thought it was only the $60,000 Equus.

How long before some tablets are given away in packs of gum? I mean, the HP should be a candidate by next weekend. But, how long for Samsung?

I said the same on BGR and I say it here, does the same scrutiny apply to the "back to school" iPod touch offer of yore?

Apple always does a promotion at that same time of year. Sammsung/BestBuy are doing this out the blue with no specific timing. Given that there are, at most, only 300,000 Android tablets world wide selling per month, this seems more like a get this out of my store type of sale.

So every other promotion is done out of pure desperation except Apple's?

It's amazing the anti-consumer stance people have here. Deals are scoffed at whilst profits are cheered for.

Perhaps I'm just tight but I love a good offer and have received plenty of "freebies" in the past (OK, they weren't free per-se but they did sweeten the deal whenever I buy something).

Why is this news? Technologies are given away free all the time with purchase of TVs, Sound systems, etc. Best Buy is trying to drive sales up with a flowing number of students coming back to school.

I remember getting a free iTouch with a Macbook Pro simply by showing my student ID that expired 4 years before that.

This is a great offer that will give Samsung more customers. Why are so many immature kids butthurt here? Any smart person knows a good deal when he sees one, WHO CARES? If you think of this offer only as a fail on Galaxy Tab part, then you are a complete moron.

The TV in the offer is a $1500 3DTV, not your bog standard, low end HDTV.

I'm starting to think Apple made the wrong decision attacking Galaxy. It gives Samsung the air of being a dangerous competitor, rather than just letting Galaxy die the Zune death it seemed destined to...

I think you are right, but I think they thought the same thing with Android smart phones and they don't want that to happen with tablets.

I'm still waiting for HTC to switch to WebOS and buy it up along with the patents from HP. Then they will have the "Beats Audio" thing all around: laptops, tablets, and smart phones. ;)

It's different than the B2S promo because that was to clear out stock of the current generation before each refresh.

But how many people actually want to buy a 3D TV anyways? Last I heard they weren't selling very well either.

I love my Galaxy Tab

I have a Galaxy Tab 7" and I love it. I have my iPhone 4 for iOS stuff and my Galaxy Tab for Android stuff. In my line of work I have to support iOS devices and Android devices, so I gotta know how to work them both.
I feel like my house would implode if I had my MacBook Pro, Time Machine, iPod Shuffle, iPhone....and a iPad all in the same place.
I think Samsung and Android are doing pretty good, it's a hard market! :)

And Hyundai was giving away iPads with car purchases. why is this news?

Hyundai was in need to sell their crappy cars, so iPad could help with it (cause people know what iPad is and how good it is)
Samsung, on the other hand, needs to show their crappy tablets to the world (publicity, ecc) and they know their TVs are good. At least people will try out the new Galaxy this way, catch my drift?

Gotta love how people are trying to defend galaxy Tab here....

While it is good to know what you like, the sales are what makes these tablets live.

Right now, Galaxy Tab is in same fate just like HP touch Pad.

A few weeks ago, a car dealership was given away iPads with a free test drive. Does that mean the iPad is doing bad as well?

nope. because the car dealership needs to actually buy the iPad from somewhere at or really close to retail price.

And Hyundai was giving away iPads with car purchases. why is this news?

Those car purchases were top end hyundai cars that competed with BMW 5Series.
Hyundai used iPad to get publicity ($500 per car? Maybe cheaper?).
If the car cost around $60000 it's only about .9% of the total cost.
Also what they did was to put the whole car manual into iPad so you don't have to carry a huge book. Trying to suck off apple's image.

Samsung is just trying to use the unsold products in the EU and helping the Americans to enjoy a cost competitive products.
EU lose... America Win.
If Apple wins the court in the EU, EU lose... America win.
It's win win situation for America.

google should give away tablets

This is getting ridiculous. What if Apple ends the year having sold 44 million iPads, and their competitors sell… 4.4 million?

It's easy to spend other people's money, but I think Google should take 3 billion cash and buy 10 million android tablets. Then give them away free in a contest where the contestants are the top 40 million most active Google+ users. 1 in 4 odds will bring in a lot of activity to their new social networking initiative, and having 10 million new AndroidPads out in the wild will keep developers interested in the platform.

What's the alternative? Continue to get blown away in the early days of the next wave of computing?

3D TVs are a gimmick and Android tablets are nothing more than tecno-geek (or Anti-Apple) gadgets. Neither are selling well, this is one way Samsung can use one type of device to help boost another's sales.

This promo will be a good way to help sway people from buying a "2D" TV into buying a 3DTV. Although the timing is pretty stupid; after HP's recent Best-Buy-Back, people may think the Galaxy is facing the same problems and Best Buy is trying to clear stock.

After what just happened with WebOS, I'm surprised they aren't giving away the HP tablets for free with ANY purchase over $50 or something just to get rid of them.

Yeah, there is a big difference when offering a $200 credit towards an iPod with purchase of a $2000 computer, especially since Apple also owns iTunes and makes back some money there when people load up their devices. We're talking about a $500 device that is 1/3 the cost of what you're buying.

And another thing, did you really just allude to Apple's promotion being out of desperation? Really? I mean honestly. They are the most valuable company in the world. They have more cash on hand than the U.S. government. They are the complete opposite of desperate. I know you're from the UK with a Zune logo for your avatar (lol), so I'll cut you some slack this time as you clearly have no idea what you're talking about.

Apple offers promotions for students to get them hooked on Apple gear at a young age. It works.

That's called a publicity stunt... Take something that's popular to lure people in. And in the promo all you have to say is, "While supplies last!" So, it could've brought hundreds of customers to the lot and they only actually gave away a handful of iPads.
