In contrast to the limited distribution channels and lengthy staggered rollout for the original iPad, Apple appears to be moving full-speed ahead with a broad launch of the iPad 2 in the United States on March 11th, and over two dozen other countries following just two weeks later.

As noted by 9 to 5 Mac, Best Buy, Wal-Mart, and Sam's Club will all be carrying the device as of March 11th.

There is no word yet, however, on whether AT&T and Verizon, Apple's carrier partners for 3G models in the United States, will also be carrying the iPad 2 at launch.

I don't understand why AT&T and Verizon aren't offering subsideized prices for iPad 2, like $400 for 16gb 3G with contract

Apple should be embarrassed that they have a partnership with wal*mart. Goes to prove money talks...and white trash buys ipads. I wonder if steve jobs would pull apple from walmart if someone buying an ipad was on peopleofwalmart.com

I really don't understand all the hate for walmart, it's the same as any super market

A huge number of iPad2's have already been built!!!

What this news tells me is that a huge number of iPad2's have already been built. With the release date in only a week, and a zillion US outlets supposedly stocking them on day one, the number of comletely assembled iPads must be in the millions. That is staggering, that not a single one got photographed or accuratedly described in advance of yesterday's announcement. Sure the rumor sites had most of the details described, but mixed in with plenty of other rumors that turned out to not be true. The white iPad's got almost no pre-announcement talk. The new protective covers and magnets were similarly not talked about.

Amazing that it can be kept under wraps. There must be a dozen 747's full of these things, somewhere. Can anyone figure out how many cubic feet of iPads are sitting somewhere?

I long for the old days when it is all a secret, and JObs can say "oh.... look at this iPod I have in my pocket" and we all fall over dead. That said, I read the rumor sites like an addict.

I wouldn't be surprised if not all locations will have the iPad2 or they will only have a certain amount of stock.

5pm?

So the Apple stores won't have the iPad on sale until 5pm. Will the other retailers need to wait until then as well?

I can imagine Steve Jobs standing in a balcony at a Chinese factory looking down at the millions of iPads getting ready to be shipped. Kind of like Emperor Palpatine looking at the thousands of clonetroopers at the end of Attack of the Clones.

Star Wars and Apple... my favorites (original trilogy only)

waiting for Amazon availability so i don't have to pay tax.

If you don't want to pay sales tax, you should try Abt.com. They are my backup if Amazon has a higher price or they just don't carry the product at all. The only downfall is no free two day shipping for Abt.

For me nearest Apple store is 1-1/2 hours drive away.
Best Buy 30 minutes drive away.
Walmart...4 minutes. Hopefully Walmart will get a 32GB White near me.

Amazon probably won't get them for a while just like last year. Competes too much with the kindle. The ones are sold from other vendors and shipped by amazon. If you want an iPad 2 soon, you have to pay your local sales tax.

Slightly similar sitch:

Apple Store: 1-1/2 hours away
Best Buy: 5 minutes away
Walamrt: 10 minutes away
ATT Store: 7 minutes away
Verizon Store: 10 minutes away

But I have next Friday off. Probably not going to camp out in front of the "local" Apple store Thursday night. My walmart is 24 hr. Looks like I'll be camping in housewares.

Yeah and for Amazon, you can pay with your credit through them for third party I think, but I heavily doubt that any financing offers will apply (free 6 month, etc..)

I hope Target gets them soon. Employees get a 15% discount + bonus 5%(pharmacy). Takes care of Tax plus an extra 10.25% off.

Any reasonable guesses on how many each of the stores will get? Will they start selling them at the same 5pm mark as well?

Does anyone see any reason why I couldn’t order it online on Friday and have it overnighted in for Monday delivery?

Sorry for all the questions, a little new to this but want to have it in hand for a trip the following week.
