For those that paid $100 more for a SIM-free iPhone X from Best Buy, calling their customer support line announces an automated message saying that they do not price-match unactivated, full retail price (SIM-free) iPhone X's.

If anyone is able to, please post here!

I called into support a little further and they said they will price match once you receive the phone. So the telephone support message was very misleading.

I ordered 2 unlocked iPhone Xs 256g. Despite having an original ship date of Nov 10, they arrived today. I brought them into BestBuy still unopened. The store employees didn’t bat an eye at pricing matching Apple. It took them a few minutes to figure out the best way to do it, but doing it was not ever in question. Even the general manager stopped by and approved the price match. YMMV

Do you have to have them be unopened or the physical item in store?

I figured it was one less issue to deal with if they were unopened. Having them with made it easier since they scanned the serial number off the box instead of having to type it in from the invoice. I don't know if either is required, but I wanted to make it as easy as possible.

I preordered on Oct. 27th within a few minutes of the drop. Got an email stating my X would be ready on Nov. 3rd. I opted for instore pickup. I didn’t want to make monthly payments; so I just paid ‘the price’. Hadn’t really given the $100 add-on at the time. Within the next day; I noticed other folks were concerned about the price match on the X?

I noticed several people have very different ideas on how Bestbuy was going to ha doe the Price Match.

So... over the next few days; as questions came to mind; I called the Bestbuy 888 number. Each time a voiced my concern based on my individual situation. 1. I was paying full price simply because I didn’t was to mess with the payment plan. 2. I opted for in-store pickup because I fully intended[and did] leave the Store with an Activated phone.

BestBuy told me they make ‘no money’ just selling phones outright. They make money when they sell a phone and report back to the Carrier that the phone was activated with a cell Company. 9Exactly what I did.

The 3 calls I made to Bestbuy had the same view. I would get the Price difference; yes, yes and yes.. They all told me to just pick up the Phone on Friday and I would have NO problem getting the $100 credit back.

The day before pickup day; I dropped by BestBuy to look for a Case for the IPhone x. A BB employee walked up and asked if I needed any help? I told her I was just looking to buy a case for the new IPhone. She saw I was looking at ‘X’ accessories. I briefed her on my ‘puzzle’. She said, ‘No problem. Pickup your phone on Friday and ask for you Price Match at that time. She told to mention her name and I would get taken care of.

When I went to pick up the IPhone; she was right there.. She said she had to run the request by one more person.10 minutes later; I was told NO REFUND!

I asked this the guy that was spouting Company policy, ‘ 4 BB employees already told me I had a good case’.

I asked the guy, ‘Why did 4 people tell me no problem’. No reasonable/logical answer was given.

Once I left the Store; I was not at all thrilled. I called B.B. customer service. The guy that took my call asked me for my story. He even had his Supervisor listen in to our conversation. He stated that both he and his Supervisor felt I should get my $hundred back.
That was on the 5th. They told me the credit would show up in a few days. On the 10th; I decided to call about the status of my Credit back?

The guy scrolling through the notes from my conversations with others on the matter; Told me that the refund was cancelled. ... So 5 days after they did not even have the courtesy to inform me. I guess I was just supposed to hold my breath?

Nobody has yet bothered to state a Valid reason for refusing to Price Match? I called Apple and told, them my sad drama. The Rep was pleasantly amused that Bestbuy would create such Bad feelings initiated over their own price gouging decision.

Not exactly the way to insure future Business.

I’m not done yet..

I'm confused.

So people ordered the phone at BB and paid an extra 100 dollars premium, because they wanted it on day 1 (or there abouts), now that the dust settled they're trying to get the 100 dollars back?

Yep. I received no pushback at all since there is an Apple store within 25 miles of the BB store.

See the tips I wrote here:

#1 is especially important. Else there's a 2 hour delay.

3 Upsides for me of purchasing from Best Buy (which I didn't know about and had not planned on doing till I was dropped into the 11/17-11/24 group despite a 00:12am purchase)

1) Southwest frequent flyer miles
2) Rewards points (I now have a $50 cert from this + ordering Hue lightstrips from BB instead of Amazon)
3) Timeliness - Thanks to the tip to buy from Best Buy, I was able to get the phone on launch weekend!

The BB associates were very friendly, though they confidently made inaccurate claims about their iPhone X model. However, their heart was in the right place since they knew I am going to travel across the pond in January for work and definitely need my second iPhone X to be unlocked from ATT.

Incorrect. I did not order so I could get the phone on day one. I ordered the X as soon as they dropped so I would not have to wait until Christmas to get one. There was no urgency. I just figured if I was going to bounce for an X; I might as well get the ball rolling.

I was not even really aware of any reasoning behind the price difference at the time I preordered. I just decided to pay in full as opposed to making monthly payments for years. I just got lucky on my delivery date. You ever get lucky?

If you read my adventure; you can easily follow my timeline and how things unfolded.

This isn’t about money. It’s about principle. I gave my new S8+ to my girl. I use an Apply IPhone 7plus at work as a calculator. If I was counting pennies; I wouldn’t buy an IPhone X in the first place. I just figured the best way to see if I liked it was to buy it and try it. I do things like that.

Once I recognized that Bestbuy was playing games; I decided I still like playing games too.

The $ is just one chip in a larger card game.

Bestbuy screwed up and now they are making things worse with their poor execution of damage control.

This is not the first time Bestbuy has gouged people on phone prices. I have found this technique of theirs goes back for years and they just don’t get how bad this makes them look.

Fact is stranger than fiction.

I worked at BB for a while. We weren't very well trained on price matching other than certain other sources only and we had to check price themselves. Not that people didn't try hard but I was never impressed with BB customer service I think they have large turnover in staff and thus not a lot of true experts.
Not that it is to the same degree of $100 but buying from Verizon directly has a 99 cents additional cost. Not enough to worry about but with Verizon quantity it is a nice chunk of change for them.

They sure seem to like all the negative publicity they can drum up.

Unconditional Price Match policy....... Uh; with exceptions.

Best Buy uses a vendor to purchase their iPhones. Does not buy directly from Apple so I am sure cuts into their profits. Still don't agree with them charging $100 additional over msrp.

Pretty sure the markup is from the phone just coming out, being so popular and limited supply. My guess is after the new year, excitement fades and the supply exceeds demand, you’ll see the price matching return. Car dealerships do the same for hot new cars. You actually think a Honda Civic type R is worth $10,000 over list? They do it because they can, not because it’s right.

We have always sold iPhones for $50-100 more than Apple MSRP if unactivated. We do not profit if we sell the phone unactivated at the regular Apple MSRP.

https://corporate.bestbuy.com/update-best-buy-iphone-x/

We no longer have the ability to sell the iPhone X outright, as referenced above in the link.

Personal Source: My 12 years as a BBY employee, 3 in operations leadership, 3 selling cellphones directly.

The only iPhone I see on their website that could be considered sim free is a Verizon iPhone 7 or 7+ full price unactivated. They don’t give that option on the 8 or X

Best Buy is such ****, the phones are subject to u.s reseller flex policy meaning you have to activate with a u.s carrier and will be locked to it unless you activate with Verizon. Why would anyone pay a extra $100 for it

I spent 45 minutes talking to customer service, they will NOT price match it, don't waste your time, either return it and re order it through apple or pay the extra $100.

[doublepost=1510741695][/doublepost]Ok... I have a question for you based on your 12 years of B.B. experience.

I have had continuous Verizon Service since 1994. It was called Airtouch back then. I deliberately pre-ordered the X and opted for ‘in Store pickup’. I went for the in Store pickup because I had no intention of leaving the Store with a New in the sealed box; Unactivated IPhone X. I stated that exact method to 4 individual BestBuy employees; on 4 separate days. 3; in conversations with reps at the 1 888 Bestbuy number. And one; in the BestBuy Store; the day before I picked up the X on November 3rd. All 4 of them had the same view. If I intended to ‘activate the X’ on my 23 year old Verizon Account; that I should get the $100 bump; back. No hesitation from any of them. I even suggested to All of them; that, ‘I dunno; you think that is a justifiable circumstance’? I told All of them, ‘I am not buying a sealed X and having it shipped to my house to sell it on EBay for a ton. I am picking it up in the Store and immediately having it put into Service. I am only paying the entire price because I just don’t feel like making monthly payments for years..

I was encouraged to not cancel my pre-order. And just go along with my plan. And simply ask for the credit when I was in Store.

The 4th BB employee I talked to actually suggested I mention her name to whoever ended up helping me on pickup day. She told me,’ If you don’t see me when you come in on the 3rd; just tell, them my name and that I said you shouldn’t have any problem.

She was there that morning and I asked her if everything was gonna work out? She said yes; but let me clear this with on more person. 10 minutes later; a guy I have never seen before; steps behind the Pickup counter and immediately asks, ‘What’s the problem’? I said; excuse me? He repeated, ‘What’s the problem? I told him my purpose. Before I even put a period on my sentence; he said, ‘Bestbuy makes NO adjustments on specifically the IPhone X. No exceptions on contract phones; period.

I mentioned the previous 4 BB reps that said, ‘No problem’. He said, ‘Well, they were all wrong to tell me what they did’.

He stated that Bestbuy makes No money on Phones that leave the Store without being tied to a contract. He said B.B. make money when they contact the Carrier and document that they sold a phone and it was assigned to a Carrier. I told him I was getting it Activated immediately after purchase. And they could walk the X right over to the Verizon Kiosk, themselves. So, right after my X is activated; than BB could contact the Carrier and make their commission; right?

He said No Exceptions.

I don’t want to draw an evil picture of this guy. He didn’t raise his voice. He wasn’t real mean. He didn’t really have any kinda Badd attitude. But one thing was very clear. He was not going to give me a credit; no matter what I said. There was No Wiggle room in this situation. He stated the Bestbuy rhetoric like he was reading off que cards.

I found this most interesting because I have been giving Lectures on Effective Communication for over 45 years.

.... On a good day; I can almost convince people that rain water comes out of the ground and goes up.

This guy assigned a ‘zero value’ to anything I had to say.

.... Now, my question. You stated that Bestbuy doesn’t make any money on an unactivated IPhone. But I was leaving the Store with an ‘Activated X’.

So how can BestBuy justify their ‘No Exceptions’ position?

They can’t. And BestBuy talks about their willingness to give their customers ‘flexibility’?

I have been a Bestbuy Customer for as long as there has been e BestBuy. If they had a Grocery Store; I would probably have BestBuy Yogurt in the Fridge.

And they are going to Punk me for $100?

BestBuy had plenty of time before the X Pre-release; to make their policy on the X; very clear and make this information easy to find and at least somewhat easier to understand. But they didn’t.

And they want to punish me for their poor handling of this Silliness.

Good job..

It’s not even about the money at this point. It’s just the principle of the matter.

You mean the principle of agreeing to purchase the phone at one price, getting it and now wanting a discount?

If you didn't like the price, you didn't need to buy it at BB. Sounds like you want your cake and it too ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Since you don’t seem to understand what I very clearly stated; why do you even bother to reply to my posts? I left the Store with an activated phone. Why should I pay that extra $hundred; when I met the condition Bestbuy says allows them to make money on the device? They don’t make money selling unactivated phones. They don’t make money selling phones not tied to a Carrier. Correct?

Ok; immediately upon purchase/pickup in Store; I activated the X and tied it to my 23 year old Verizon account.

I did not leave the Store with a non-activated, sealed in box IPhone.

What part of this don’t you understand?

I give away money. A hundred bucks is peanuts to me. I’m not asking for a crybaby discount.

I am looking for a justified price adjustment; factually based on my meeting Bestbuys’ criteria on buying and activating a phone and tying it to a Carrier. Period.

If you can’t deal with common sense and fact based conclusions; move on...

BestBuy was making a SIM free model available when no one else had them. They skipped the carrier phase of the purchase as well. They should have made this the focal point of their advertising.

Early SIM free phone, and no carrier confirmation seems to me to be worth $100 for those in need of this type of phone. For others, it seemed like an overcharge.

lol, if you say so, but you were the one who bought the phone at a premium price, and now have some buyers remorse over the principle of paying more.

Good luck on getting the 100 dollars - I actually mean it, even if that amount of money doesn't matter to you, but I'm finding this thread to be informative and will continue to be active in it.
