Just got my Dell 2408 WFP and its awesome. Highly recommended. Its on my mac pro.

Just my opinion like, so don't take it to heart ok.

... But I think those Dells look aesthetically ugly, esp when you compare the designs of the Dell Displays and Cinema Displays together, taking into the account the beautiful looks of our MacPro's.

From what I've seen, don't the Dells have a bulky back side? i.e. it's not flat like the ACD's.

Dell 3008FWP

I like the new Dells. You can pick them up for $1500 on eBay.

I plan to get one and retire my 24" Dell to my Mac Mini for use as a Navigation system on my boat.

I like the other guy's idea about having two 30" displays. That would be nice.

However, one you get comfortable moving around in Spaces, you can magnify the power of any monitor. The only issue I've seen is some software only works in the top left (Space #1). That is a bit of a pain.

I wanted to see two pages of text on one monitor. A 30" display will do that.

Definitely bling but highly impractical for 90% of the time. I have one 30" and it's sometimes overwhelming as is; can't imagine another one.

greetings from another member of the 30" club! ;) Not sure how long you've owned your ACD but trust me after a couple of months you'll find that the 30" isn't as big as it used to be and want to add another display. That's how I feel at least..it felt a little unwieldy at first like Cloud's sword but after awhile, it felt like any other monitor.

I wouldn't say two 30" displays are impractical..they'll definitely be a pixel wonderland in terms of productivity. It's the cost perspective that makes it impractical.

Got myself a 3008FWP recently, while it needs to be calibrated (I got a Spyder from Datacolor), it's overall very good. I don't understand why people keep buying the Apple unit, its lack of height adjustability violates basic ergonomics principles - tilting a screen does not make it height-ajustable, and is definitely a show stopper for me.

Ergo why I will never buy an iMac in current form; my kids got a Mac Mini mostly because of that.

I can also play just fine on the 3008FWP, using a X-Fire of 3870, and also from an Xbox 360 connected to it in through HDMI.

A nice "bonus", is that my Logitech QuickCam Vision Pro blends well with the display's bezel and is stable on it, unlike on my previous Dell display.

Yup...NEC 2690WUXi is amazing!

Yes, NEC 2690WUXi is awesome! It features the new S-IPS from which ACD's H-IPS just seem to become outdated. The NEC also has more positioning option, height, tilt, and vertical viewing. I couldn't be happier with its color accuracy.:D

Oh, did I mention it comes with a 4-year warranty?

Apple's H-IPS panel in the LED ACD is newer than those being used by NEC. NEC are better displays though.

Not totally flat but kind of slim. Since I don't watch the back of the monitor, I don't mind. I like the multiple connections on this monitor where as apple has less options. Plus the fact it cost allot less than what apple charges.

Let's make it clear where the confusion might be:

Apple's 30" ACD uses S-IPS, released in 2002, which is a relatively older technology to NEC's 2690WUXi's H-IPS released in 2006, which is what I was referring to.

Apple's new 24", with what many feel is the awfully glossy screen, uses a similar H-IPS technology to the NEC.

So if you use an MP for pro graphic work and want the newer H-IPS technology, NEC 2690WUXi offers an overall better product in matte at a lower cost and larger screen, IMHO.;) But if you are hooked on Apple's good looks, nothing close beats it!:D

From my research before choosing a display your information is 100% accurate and I do think the 2690 is one of the best monitors for the money.

That it can also be used for xbox 360 is a nice bonus. Can most displays (other than apple) be used to hook up to game consoles?

Thanks for all the ideas guys your giving me a lot to think about and do research on. originally i was just going to go with the samsung t220hd but now it looks like their are some real competitors out there :)
