Sorry if this is a stupid question, but if I use MacTheRipper to rip DVD's and then use Popcorn to compress and burn them, what do I need Handbrake for?

I've never used Popcorn, it may indeed serve the same purpose, but I'm not sure if it gives you as many options as Handbrake, and if it is as powerful or feature-rich. Plus, Handbrake works so slick.

Can Popcorn do all the following? If so, cool... if not, use Handbrake. :p ;)

Supported sources:
- Any DVD-like source: VIDEO_TS folder, DVD image or real DVD (even encrypted)
- PAL or NTSC
- AC-3, LPCM or MPEG audio tracks

Outputs:
- File format: MP4, AVI or OGM
- Video: MPEG-4 or H.264 (1 or 2 passes or constant quantizer encoding)
- Audio: AAC, MP3, Vorbis or AC-3 pass-through (supports encoding of several audio tracks)

Miscellaneous features:
- Chapter selection
- Basic subtitle support (burned into the picture)
- Integrated bitrate calculator
- Picture deinterlacing, cropping and scaling
- Grayscale encoding

The best program that (strangely) no one has heard of is Fast DVD Copy. You insert disc, press copy, and that's it.

Fast DVD Copy makes your DVD region-free, removed Macrovision, and will even automatically re-encode a dual-layer disc to fit on a single layer disc. You can select specific items to drop from a copy (remove French subtitles, for example) through an easy menu.

Everyone else talks about ripping this, re-encoding that, using all these programs to copy a DVD. Fast DVD Copy makes copying DVDs on the Mac what it should be: a painless experience.

There is a demo available at their site.

A question about Mac TheRipper. The description on VersionTracker has something about making the dvd rip region free. If I was to buy a dvd online from Amazon that was encoded to play in the US only, could I use Mac TheRipper to rip it and re-encode it as region 4 (for here in .au), without having to play with the region code settings on my Mac?

If this is true, I will be buying a few more DVD's I think.

aussie_geek

Yes, there is an ability with Mac the Ripper to rchange region codes or make it region-free. Region free is actually the default setting I beleive.

I use toast for general burning, and a Mac the Ripper > Popcorn combo for backing up DVD movies I buy. Happy with all.

you don't need handbrake in that scenario. I use mac the ripper with popcorn and I don't have handbrake.

what i use handbrake for

what i use handbrake for is to compress movies into a mpg4 format. in this format the movie only takes up around 900 mb on the disk instead of 4.4 gb which is about the compression size of a movie after standard compression by popcorn or dvd2onex. this is great when you want to have a number of movies on your harddrive to watch on a plane or trip. this way you dont have to carry the discs with you. also if you have a harddrive attached to your bigscreen you can store a ton more movies in that format, the quality difference isnt really noticable to me on the computer, i dont know about a bigscreen however.

ok wait a min...

i just want to know what programs to use if i wanted to rip and burn DVDs:
1)rip DVDs to my hard drive
2)burn them so they work with most if not all commercial DVD players.

i just downloaded mac the ripper. handbrake sounds like a good program to burn with.

i already have toast 6, if i burn the movies on toast, the DVDs work with most commercial DVD players?

From HandBake's FAQ page:

2.1 I want to convert a movie so I can burn it on a VCD or a DVD-R. Is HandBrake the right application to do this?

No. HandBrake only outputs MPEG-4, no MPEG-1 or MPEG-2. If you are using OS X, have a look at forty-two, ffmpegX, DVDRemaster or DVD2oneX. This will save you time and quality.

I have had good luck with Popcorn but DVD2oneX seems offer more options for a higher price.

With the process of mtr/dvd2onex (or handbrake)/toast (to burn) that will play in any player. The big "if" is the brand of dvd disc you would use as to the "what will play". I use (Don't use cheap media it will only give you a pain in the ass) TDK, Verbatium dvds and haven't found a player as of yet that won't play my dvds. Also I use the "-r" and not the "+r" discs as sometimes this can make a dvd unplayable in some set top players.
I check about 1-2 times a week www.supermediastore.com for dvd prices as they sometimes have rebates on the dvds they sell. Hope this helps

making coasters when burning DVD's is not cheap...
I'd believe you if this post was made 5 years ago. The cost of DVD-R 2x media was about $20 per disc. Today, I can get the highest quality Taiyo Yuden DVD-Rs 8x for about 80 cents each.

Yeah, I already commented on this earlier in the thread. Not sure where he's coming from....

That's probably because it costs $100 USD. Handbrake and MacTheRipper cost me nothing. :p
But there's one small problem: Handbrake, as others have pointed out, does *not* produce DVD content that will play on generic standalone DVD players, so exactly why to you keep talking about it?

All these different tools have their purpose. As ArtfulDodger commented on, which reinforced my earlier point, with the combination of MacThe Ripper and DVD2OneX (or Handbrake) / Toast 6.0 (to burn), you can produce DVD content that will play on generic standalone DVD players.

Why is it that we seem to have a complete disconnect here? Handbrake only does mpeg4 encoding. Generic standalone DVD players can't play mpeg4 encoded DVDs.

Sorry, my fault for not explaining myself well enough. ;) You are right, you wouldn't use Handbrake in that situation - only for encoding to MP4/AVI format from a DVD. MacTheRipper + Toast/Popcorn is all you need to rip and burn DVDs which will play in standalone players.

Better now? Or still more questions? Again, my apologies...

No problem, really. I use MTR + Popcorn. I just didn't want other readers to be confused about what handbrake can/can't do. Personally, I'd love to see a commercial H.264 DVD player, although the encoding times, even on a G5, would be pretty lengthy.

My 15" PB with Panther: Toast 6 Tatanium (works without problems), Popcorn (works withtout problems)
My 12" PB with Tiger" Popcorn with a recent patch (works without problems: I just copied 2 DVDs for my personal backups after using MacTheRipper)

may i ask what/where this patch for popcorn came from? i just recently bought a g5 iMac and popcorn closes on me whenever i try to drag files into it. EDIT: nevermind. i found it.

MacTheRipper & iDVD : all I need to copy movie DVD's?

Hello,

Is it possible to burn the output of MacTheRipper to 1 DVD with iDVD, even if the output takes more than 4.7 GB? In other words, is iDVD an alternative to Roxio Popcorn?

Thanks in advance.

No, you would need something like DVD2OneX for shrinking a DVD down to 4.7 GB. Toast 7 would burn it though, I never use iDVD for that.

Toast 7.0 also does the shrinking though. So if you have 7 there is almost no need for DVD2OneX... especially not with all the horrendous reviews their new version is getting.

Cool, thanks for the information on this. I have Toast 7 (which I love by the way) but have not needed to test to see if this functionality was present or not. Good to know for future reference.
