What are other peoples rxternal storage set ups for their rmbp?

LaCie 2Big 6TB runing RAID 1 mode for 3TB mirrored. Backkup is 3TB Time Capsule. Neither set are meant to be mobile.

If I wanted a really mobile set of drives for 2TD, I would use two LaCie Rugged USB 3 Thunderbolt drives.

Would i get 300 mb/s if I used 1 750 gb wd black and a 256 samsung evo in raid 0?

Ill play it safe I think......
Bought the enclosure just which to drives seagate momentus xt or wd black
as these are the fastest 2.5 hard drives on the market below 100

You can mix drives, but Disk Utility will reduce capacity to the smallest drive size.

It will work, and results will be interesting...

As you say, results would be interesting, but a large HDD and a small SSD are are asking to be combined in a Fusion Drive rather than a RAID 0.

What speeds in RAID 0 would
I be expecting from 2 WD black drives?

You may want to rethink this. The drive is actually quite old. It does have two drives inside. They might be IDE; they might be SATA.

This used hardware controller to link both drives together in RAID-0 as one logical volume. No way to use as JBOD or RAID-1.

You'll have to look inside.

The largest configuration this was ever sold was as 1TB, using 2x 500GB drives inside.

I have one of these and there is not much flexibility for new, larger drives.

What drives would you suggest I put in for my needs then?? Must be at least 1tb and 200 MB/s....

I doubt you will do better than two of the new HGST 1 Tb 7200 drives.

Is the something magic about your 300 Mbs requirement you stated earlier? (how does that line up with the 200MB/s above?)

My gut says you might achieve a peak of 230-250 by Raid 0 HDDs.

Read it in toms hardware but probably a load of BS.
I think I've bought this enclosure and all I want to know is would 7200 rpm WD black drives easily cope with Logic Pro x and xcode
That's as simple as I can put it!!

Sorry, read what in Toms Hardware? that it will do 300? If so that is fine...I would tend to trust Toms Hardware. Would be interested in a link.

I don't use Logic Pro or xcode, but if you have a specific concern about them I expect they have forums you could ask in. I would be surprised if anyone there says 300MB/s is essential.

All I am saying is that I don't think you will find anything faster than two RAID 0 7200rpm HDDs within your budget, which excludes SSD.

I would prefer the recent HGST over WD Black which has been around a long time....or has it been updated?

Remember a RAID 0 drive is twice as likely to fail so you should budget for an extra backup.

So these are the drives you would use ?

Review gives transfer speeds which seem fine BUT for small files it seems a
little slow - that's just copying lots of small files though, so not the use you are
looking for.

I think a pair of these in Raid 0 would be just great... NOT 300MB/s though !
more like 220-230.

BUT - as has been stated a few times, failure is more likely with this setup
so you NEED a backup strategy from cheaper 5400rpm enclosures !!!

Note that review is three years old. I think things have moved on a bit...hence recommendation for more recent HGST 1Tb 7200

Ah - thanks Mike, I myself am using 2x HGST 7200rpm's with good results.

I keep repeating myself and the OP is just ignoring me for some reason ??

I'm also using the devices with Logic 9-X / AV work !

.... well I'm trying to help... outa here !!

Mike,
I think your drive can push 150 mb/s so for 300 mb/s in RAID 0 is a possibility
2 questions: I think you drive is the newest 7200 rpm out there?
How long do RAID 0 las t before they break?

Sorry Marty , not ignoring you , just taking it all into account!

Know any 2.5 hard drives that could reach 300 mb/s in RAID 0 ;)

Yes I think the HGST 1 Tb 7200rpm is the most recent drive of it's kind.

RAID 0 drives last about half as long as a non RAID drive!

Some of my drives are fine after 10 years, some fail in two. Reliability has improved.

They might be hotter in a RAID enclosure which might affect life, but there is other evidence that temp is not as important as thought.

I am quite relaxed about all my data being on RAID 0 drives, because i have at least three copies of everything.

Just be well backed up and relax...having good backups is a huge peace-of-mind factor in everything to do with computers.

Stick two of them in then! Marty, final question , this setup is good for logic pro right?

Ah - hello :)

Well I use Logic professionally on a cMP - that's a different setup entirely.... BUT...

I Also have a portable system on my MBP - Quad 2.4 late 2011 version.

I use 2 x drives with that, both have large samples / Libraries and record
Audio.
One is a Lacie Rugged TB/USB3.0 drive and I have stuck a 1TB HGST 7200rpm drive
in it - the original 5400 was "OK" but not quite fast enough.
- It works well as a single drive for me, don't need Raid IMHO unless you want
to stream a very large orchestral library .... is that the case ??

Second drive is a USB3.0 enclosure with another 1TB HGST 7200rpm inside.
This I have to use with my Belkin TB Dock - no native USB3.0 on my MBP !

My system drive in the MBP is a 750gb EVO SSD, this combined with the Lacie and the
7200rpm gives me all that I need.

What are your specific concerns with Logic ? would help to know the details :)

Marty.

How well it does when transferring large samples , storing plugins of up to 5gb?
Would my setup be quick enough?

Also have 512 ssd which reaches 700mb/a
So all apps
Are stored on that

Totally fine for me with things such as :
NI Komplete Ultimate
Spectrasonics Omnisphere/Trillian/RMX
Logic's own library is on the system drive SSD anyway, along with a couple more.

IF ... you had perhaps "LASS" strings that needs to stream HUGE samples from
disk ... I would say Raid OR SSD would be required ... otherwise no problem.

Regards,
Marty.

Great Ill get 2 of those drives then!
Btw just wondering if you use any thunderbolt audio interfaces?
