Speakeasy can!

<rant>
It's really Apple's fault that third party apps can't sync with the desktop automatically when the iPhone is synced through iTunes.</rant>

I am friends of the developers at Speakeasy and they are actually about to put out an update to their desktop client (Speakeasy Connect) that will automatically transfer your recordings to iTunes when you sync your iPhone. It is really cool. Also, they will be putting out the Windows version of the Speakeasy Connect in the next few days. These guys are really coming out with some great stuff in the very near future!

It is out and it works great! So now there IS an export and the article should be changed.

I bought QuickVoice this morning and it supposedly comes with a free copy of QuickVoice PC for your computer, but I can't seem to find out how to get it. I emailed this morning at the email provided, but I have not gotten a response. Has anyone else bought this with the bonus software? How do you get it?

VoiceRecord is my app of choice. They have updated it since the OP was made and its benefits are -

*CD Quality recording as an option (44100 Hz)
*Option for instant start or upon record button press
*Pause / Resume button for recordings
*Renaming of files
*Sharing over FTP

Cheap too. Does the job for me.

QuickVoice

I have been using QuickVoice since college started. I use it (w/permission) during my law class and have had no issues. I sit in the middle of the classroom and it records the whole classroom discussions as well as lectures. After each hour I stop and label the recording with Chapt and date/time/class. At night I go home and sync it to my Laptop using the free software also called QuickVoice.

A note to the user looking for the free software...look in your Junk mail for the code...Firefox codes it as junk mail for some reason.

I do wish it had an added pause button instead of just a stop but its not something that is a do or die loss.

I also think this thread and the "Grades" should be updated to make it a user accurate referance.

Only thing i dont like is that iDicto records in 22.100KHz in a semi-compressed audio format... not bad quality and file management, and just requires a web browser to sync. the web interface it hosts on the phone is quite good.

Has anyone figured out how to hook up a real microphone to the iPhone just yet? I want to start using this phone as a digital audio recorder...

The latest version gives you the option of 44.1KHz now. Makes a big difference.

iLounge provides an extensive roundup of all of the iPhone voice recorders presently available in the App store. These apps are, of course, only compatible with the iPhone and not the iPod touch due to a lack of built-in microphone for the iPod touch. A summary of their ratings are provided here (prices link to App Store):

* Voice Memos ($4.99, D) - no-frills. no way to get recordings off iPhone.
* Voice Notes (Free, C-) - no-frills. easy to accidently delete recording. no export.
* VoiceRecord ($0.99, B-) - slightly more polished. no pause, no export
* SpeakEasy Voice Recorder ($1.99, B+) - polished. level meter, adjust quality. no export
* Audio Recorder ($2.99, B) - email recordings out of iPhone.
* QuickVoice Recorder ($1.99, B-) - transfer recordings out to Mac or PC. pause/resume.
* Recordifier ($4.99, C) - no pause/resume. no export.
* Recorder ($0.99, B-) - basic recorder. email recordings out of iPhone. no pause.
* Note2Self ($2.99, B+) - designed to email recordings out of iPhone. accelerometer detects usage.
* EccoNote (Free, C-) - poor interface.
* iRecorder ($0.99, B-) - works as advertised. standard UI. no export.
* YouNote (Free, C) - note taking
* Jott (Free, B-) - part of Jott service to record and transcribe to do's.

While iLounge's top picks include SpeakEasy Voice Recorder [App Store] and Note2Self [App Store], it's clear the best choice will depend on your usage. While Note2Self seems well designed for recording personal reminders, it would be less useful for recording lectures. If recording lectures is your goal, it would seem Audio Recorder [App Store] or QuickVoice Recorder [App Store] might be more useful with the ability to get recordings out of your iPhone and onto your Mac.

iLounge provides a much more in-depth look at each application in their review.

I heard Note2Self (One of the ones bolded above) is supposed to be the best App for recording. That's just what I heard.. :)

I totally agree with you - would love to be able to do this for my own app. Instead we are all left to come up with a range of disparate schemes to let users get data back to their desktops. It's just not very "Apple" is it?!

There's an iDicto option under the iPhone settings.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5F136 Safari/525.20)

is there one which shows a mic level and input level changer on the recording screen or something like that for concerts?

I don't know what will happen if any apps will record it?-let me know plz.

I'm shocked that no one has mentioned Recorder. It's BY FAR the best app because it has the one critical ability that I can't be without. It can sync directly with the desktop without the need for email or anything else.

For the record I'm not the author of the app nor do I have any relationship with the developer other than being a very happy customer.

I am considering QuickVoice for use on my 3G. I will be using it for musical purposes and also recording lectures. The syncing with iTunes is a must! Was wondering if any of the users could let me know how well this would do at recording from a distance (ie. in a lecture hall). Its loud enough for me to hear comfortably, so I'm assuming the internal mic would do an adequate job at recording it??

Also, if a call or message comes in, is the recording interrupted??

the only problem you may run into is the mic clipping out and distorting the audio. also if a call or message is received then your phone will interrupt any program that is running at the time. just go into settings and turn the airplane mode on.

Help needed for 3G iPhone user going to Japan NEXT WEEK!

I hope somebody here will have a creative idea about this -- I'm stumped!

I have a friend in the UK who has recently bought a 3G iPhone, and is enjoying it tremendously (being a PC user ;-). She also has an iPod Nano and a Griffin microphone, & uses these to record voice memos which are then compressed to .mp3 (in iTunes) and finally sent to me as attachments to e-mail messages. (I really appreciate this, as it cuts down on the amount of typing that's needed to communicate -!) Of course, this involves syncing her Nano with her laptop and attaching the .mp3 voice files to emails that she creates on the laptop.

Right now the problem is that she is about to leave for a few weeks of cycle touring in Japan -- departing Wednesday, October 22 -- and would naturally much prefer to travel without a laptop. It would be a LOT better if she could use her iPhone to both record voice memos and also e-mail them to me, since the procedure with the Nano obviously requires access to a laptop.

I hoped to find an iPhone voice recorder to recommend to her, so I read this thread and reviewed the various apps mentioned.. now I finally understand that *Apple* has sortof hobbled developers who are trying to provide this kind of functionality to us users, by not permitting audio files to be attached to e-mails that are typed on the iPhone. I guess I can understand that there may be fears of mass music piracy..... but I REALLY wish there was a simple way to e-mail voice memos, without having to upload them to yet more online servers. Obviously this is already happening, when she sends these files to me as Yahoo e-mail attachments... but I would still prefer it if we didn't have to rely on servers that belong to the developers of these apps. (I agree with mkrishnan, for instance, who posted above that "third party web apps are not appropriate for sensitive information.")

So -- does anyone have some more ideas about how to get voice memos
*that are recorded and stored on the iPhone*
attached to a plain old Yahoo e-mail, without involving a laptop?

Thanks !!!

Do any of these record in mp3 format, like Vito Audio notes does?

I really miss Vito Audio notes which I have on my PocketPC. Do any of these have the ability to record to mp3 directly as a default or at least an option?
And if not,, I wonder why. That would be the first thing that I would introduce on a recording software for iTunes. Thanks for any inputs to my question

One of the great features of some winmobile voice recorder is one-touch recording. Pressing one button when in standby and the record start.

Does any of the apps do this? OR! Is there another app to reconfigure the volume buttons to launch a program/start a recording?

Any help would be appreciated... been trying to figure this out for ages!!!

Not in Canada?

Wow. Wow. We made Note2Self and we're really happy to see this. I think version 1.1 will make people happy - location saving of notes, naming of notes, pausing of recordings, and more. If all goes well - up on App store this week.

It seems that Note2Self is not available in the Canadian iTunes store.
I'm curious why that would be!

S.

Yes, SPEAKEASY VOICE RECORDER gives the option to start recording upon launch of application - thus, one-touch recording. By the way, SpeakEasy was just reviewed by PC Magazine where it was "awarded the coveted PC Magazine 4 Stars Rating. The awards are selected by a panel of PC Magazine editors, and leading industry experts." See the article here: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2333189,00.asp.
