kde, I tried to PM you but it said you could not receive PM's. I thought I would reply here with my tips for your print issue...
It could be that something on the Macbook Pro's firewall is stopping connectivity to the printer. I was unable to get my old Powermac G5 to see my HP printer until i disabled the firewall. That would be the first thing i would try. Be sure that if you do that you re-enable it when you are traveling and/or out from behind the router/firewall at your house.
The second thing I would do is make sure that the vendor's driver (or generic mac drivers used) support that printer and communication to it via a network. In theory it should be no different and I suspect the netgear device you are using just makes it look like a windows workstation sharing a printer.
Those are my best guesses, hope it gets you some satisfaction.
