I've been using the free mapquest app with voice navigation. Not quite accurate but works just fine on my iPad and iPhone 4.

Recently took trips to Central Michigan and North Carolina coast and Navigon was no use to us on our iPhone and 3G iPad. I'd assume any GPS on the iPhone or iPad would have failed as we had only Edge service in both locations. Good thing I had a Garmin!
I'm interested to know why Navigon failed for you (and why would you assume GPS would fail because of an Edge connection)? Navigon only requires a GPS satellite connection (nothing to do with cellular data service to do basic navigation unless you are searching Google for POints of Interest).

Has anyone here had experiences with Navigon et al in Europe? And does it work for pedestrians? I'll be doing a few tours through Europe when we move back there, and an iPad seems like a pretty good idea - not for constant guided use (would look silly missing out on the sights because I'm too engrossed in the iPad), but as an efficient replacement for those crappy paper maps that you get from a Tourist Info booth.
The original reviews I saw on the European versions were positive. Theoretically you should have better results in Europe since that's where Navigon's corporate offices are and where they have the largest installed base of hardware GPS receivers.
Exactly. I've never had the cell activated on my 3G and Navigon runs just fine for me. I only have EDGE in my home area and my iPhone running Navigon using EDGE has never had a problem.

Tha's good news - especially as we won't be restricting ourselves to one country. But does it do walking routes as well?
I use copilot on my iphone4. I couldn't resist the price ($4.99 + 2.99 for TTS). I've been meaning to try it on the ipad but haven't gotten around to it. I've also used Motion GPS. I thought they were both adequate and about the same. However, both had poor menus (too many options!!).
I really wish google would finally add turn-by-turn navigation to the included maps program. I use the "search" function ALL the time to find nearby coffee shops, gas stations etc. When I try to do that with copilot, it lists stores that are nearby but only tells me how far it is from me. Why can't they show it to me on a map? Distance is NOT the only thing I consider when picking where to go.
