Here are some detailed instructions for installing the update that I found helpful on the Hardforum site: (to be done on a Windows PC)
Seriously? What about on the Mac? Are you saying Samsung are selling a sub-standard drive that can only be repaired on a Windows PC? It doesn't exactly look like a user-friendly update process either...

I have VirtualBox but no access to a 'real' Windows PC. Will that do?

Have to admit, I'm a little put off the Samsung drive now :(

PS Not taking anything away from your excellent instructions, it's just made me annoyed with Samsung that's all ;)

I was able to update mine in a Mac Pro using a FreeDOS ISO which already had the Samsung firmware update copied into it.
The ISO is linked in this post: http://forum.synology.com/enu/viewt...a2338951bfff07611c8ff8e5c35&start=150#p124311

Instructions for use are:

- choose 1) "continue to boot from FreeDos"
- choose 1) "install to harddisk using FreeDos"
- choose your desired language
- choose "run FreeDos from CD"

Now you should get the prompt x:

- type "HD204UI" and press enter

Thanks all for the firmware tips. Do you have to connect it as a local drive in order to do the firmware update?

new to this thread. I just replaced my 500gb with a 1.5tb WD EARS. Anything I should know? It's installed and formatting right now. Does it suffer from the spin down problem?

It was chrfr, I believe, that reported his 1.5TB WD EARS did not spin down. My 2TB WD20EARS does spin down while other people's have not. It's a puzzle and we'd like to hear how yours is working.

You can check yours by double-clicking it in Finder to mount it. The "spin up" is very quiet, but if the room is quiet you should hear the drive inside the Time Capsule "spin up", and you can feel a tiny vibration as it does so. Unmount it, and 2 to 3 minutes later it should "spin down," getting quieter and the slight vibration should go away.

While mine works perfectly, several have reported that their WD-EARS drives don't spin down like the TC's original drive did. They work OK for backups, but are using more power and generating more heat than necessary.

How's yours in the spin -up -down behavior?

For a simple Mac user, who can replace a hard drive, but does not wish to buy a drive that isn't going to function correctly or needs a firmware update, or is noisier than the stock TC drive, could some of the forum users report what IS WORKING for them? I'd like to take my TC up from 500gig to 2gig without headaches.

Any advice will be appreciated!::apple:

Samsung F4 2TB drive (HD204UI) has been working fine for me since February 21st.

Thanks for the info. Didn't work on my 2 drives that are setup as RAID 0 though :(

Stick to WD, Seagate or Hitachi's low power 5400-5900RPM drives if you want quiet and no firmware update ... for now.

I have always bought Western Digital, but the older TC seems to have problems with "Advanced Format" drives, i.e. they never spin down.

I am hoping someone might recommend a 2TB drive that is working for them without problems or firmware updates. One friend recommended looking for older WD drives, but I'd like to go for a large size that will last me for awhile.

FWIW I did stick one of the WD20EARS drives in my TC once I got the Cisco PSU mod installed and can confirm what others have said. It doesn't spin down like the original drive. Brian33 remains the only one for whom it seems to work OK.

I restored the factory drive and left it as is.

Weird.

Unfortunately I need my HITACHI Deskstar 7K2000 (non Advanced Format 2 TB drive) as a boot drive for my WHS or I'd stick it in the TC.

Thanks - I may just leave my 500Gig drive in the TC for now, unless I hear of something straight-forward & simple as a replacement that works every time.

Thanks balamw for trying that out. Mine is still working and spinning down fine, but it seems we've had so many negative reports about spin-down that we can't actually recommend the WD20EARS for Time Capsule use. Too bad, since it seems like a natural. It still bugs me that we don't know why mine spins down in the TC fine and, 4 or 5 other people's don't. Oh well.

I'll try it with one of the WD10EARS I have in the WHS server now when I pull them.

It's looking like the Samsung as a replacement for me. Unless I'm mistaken, everyone here who has used them as replacements for TC has been happy with the results.

I'm just trying to currently sort out a replacement monitor for a Power Mac G5 because those sodding ADC-DVI adapters are swapping hands on eBay for about £100 a piece  :(

I found two other forum topics in which the Samsung HD204UI came out as the choice with no problems.

Please let me know how your replacement goes!

Thanks!

I gave up on my efforts with the Western Digital and put a Samsung in (SpinPoint F4 EcoGreen 2TB HD204UI) and it works great so far. It spins down like it's supposed to and isn't obnoxiously loud like the original Seagate when it spins up.
Edit: For those buying the HD204UI, there is a firmware update which has a fix to prevent data loss. Guess I'll be taking the TC back apart shortly.

This data loss/firmware update is still an issue for me. I wonder they fixed it at the factory on the newer drives?

You can't tell, so you need to put the firmware update in.

Some of the forums are questioning whether the firmware fix does fix it once and for all. I own 8 of the Samsungs, all purchased within the last 3 months and 3 have failed and been RMA'd. I've had better luck with the Hitachi 5K3000 2TB - not advanced format.

Eeek

Well I was just buying the replacement drive and was just coming on here to say this, when I realise I might have made a slight boo-boo and ordered an older version! here's the one I ordered, the HD103SI:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B001U3S5S0/

Then I looked back at previous posts and I should have ordered the HD105SI:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0031M9JC4/

They both look the same and both say they have 32MB cache... Do you think I'll be okay? Should I try and change my order?

Hi all,

Just thought I'd report in, let you know about my upgrade story so far :)

Well the HD103SI came as mentioned. I know I got the wrong one but since they both seem to be similarly spec'd then I wasn't too worried.

Firstly, I thought I could create a "clone" of the disk by simply running the AirPort Utility archive function onto the new HD, which is what I did. This is not the case so people who have yet to upgrade, take note! The new drive will need to be formatted in the Time Capsule once installed. If you want to continue your TM backups from your old files, you need to do one of two things:

  • Copy all the .sparseimage files off the Time Capsule onto a local drive, and then copy them back again once you've replaced the drives. I couldn't do this because I didn't have enough space on any of my drives, and you can't use the new drive because it will need to be reformatted
  • Create a proper hard drive clone by using a utility such as SuperDuper! or CarbonCopyCloner. I couldn't do this either, because both drives would need to be connected as local drives on a machine and I didn't have enough SATA bays or any SATA external HD enclosures to put them in.

The problem with copying the .sparseimage files to the *new* drive and then installing it into the Time Capsule, is that the TC needs the drive to be in a different (weird) format. Try connecting an already formatted drive into the TC with files on it, the files won't show up. Try connecting your old TC drive to a machine locally, you'll see two partitions with nothing in them. I have no idea what's going on here, but suffice it to say, it won't work.

So I had to unfortunately start backups from scratch. I was a little disappointed but not worried, because I'd done an off-site archive of the TC about a month ago.

Anyway tracking back a bit, I obviously needed to install the new drive. In theory this is a fairly easy process, but unfortunately for me I found it a little tricky and at one point I thought I was screwed... Some of the screws were *really* tight, so if there's one piece of advice I'd give it would be to try loosening them all off first before removing any of them. Also, the little screw-feet on the old drive were also extremely tight and at one point I thought I was going to have to buy new ones for the new HD. But a few hours later, I was up and running... Although as stated previously I had to reformat the new HD again from AirPort Utility, which unfortunately negated the 11-hour archive I'd previously done. It would make more sense if Apple made the archive function a cloning utility so that if the TC drive died you could just swap it for one of the clone archives... But I digress.

Doing the backups from scratch naturally took a long time (some I did wirelessly and others via Ethernet). But immediately I noticed the difference in the noise level... No loud spin-up or spin-down hums any more! The TC lives on the top of a sideboard next to where I sit and before I could always tell when a backup was starting or finishing. But now there's no way of telling that without getting within a few inches of the unit. However, one thing about the drive I chose is that sometimes it makes quite noticeable clunking noises as it writes to the drive. It vibrates through the sideboard so it is fairly noticeable, but not nearly as noticeable as the hum was from the original drive.

So now I've had it running for nearly 48 hours, and on the whole it's working well... The speed of backups appears to be just as good as it was before. However, a problem that I have had a few times so far: Time Machine sometimes cannot find the backup volume and fails to backup. But this is usually solved by locating the drive again and selecting "Backup Now". I have no idea why this is so if anyone has a clue, please let me know. At one point earlier today, none of the machines could find the TC drive and I couldn't even connect to it via Sharing. So I switched the TC off and on again and it's been fine ever since. I need to keep a close eye on this, but I'm hoping it's not to do with a dodgy drive!

Anyway I hope some of you may have found this mahoosive posting useful... I'd be really interested to hear in other people's upgrade stories!

Thanks, jowie, for reporting back. I was wondering how the upgrade would go. It must have been worrisome when you couldn't remove one of the screws! I almost feel guilty that my upgrade went so easily. Glad it's quieter and working out for you.

You don't mention explicitly whether the drive spins down after a short period of non-use like it should. Do we assume that it does?

I guess that gives us a positive data point for the Samsung EcoGreen HD103SI 1TB as a Time Capsule replacement drive.

Brian33.
