If you aren't finding great intros in modern rock, you aren't looking too hard. :)

Tool - Eulogy (2:08 minutes of wonderful buildup before a single line is sung)
Porcupine Tree - The Start of Something Beautiful
A Perfect Circle - The Noose (my vote for most haunting intro)
Muse - City of Delusion
Seether - 69 Tea
Radiohead - Sit Down / Stand Up (the whole song just keeps building on itself until the very end)
Dredg - Lechium (easily one of the most memorable in my collection)

and let's not forget-- my vote for best rock intro ever:
Coheed & Cambria - Welcome Home :)

first one that popped into my head...

Iron Man by Black Sabbath.

Second was the keyboards notes that start "Girls" by the Beastie Boys.

No one's mentioned any by Led Zeppelin yet?!

The Song Remains the Same by Led Zeppelin (who else?) has to be one of the best intros. It just has so much energy to it, and mmm, multitracked guitar... :D

Stairway To Heaven of course.
and Kashmir.
All Along The Watchtower.
For Those About To Rock (we salute you)
Ozzy-No More Tears.
U2-Sunday Bloody Sunday.

I dont know about the "best" but it is certainly the most, hmm cant think of a word to describe it really, but it has to be Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. All you need to hear is that opening note. Not being a musician I will probably get it wrong but I think I heard somewhere that is was a B-flat. If you know the exact note go and play it on a piano, just that note and you know which song it is. Amazing really, fantatsic song, fantastic writer, fantastic band.

I am sure some songs hav better intros but to me this is something more really. Something more powerful that just a piece of music. Just that one note can mean so much, to me, is pretty amazing really.

EDIT: Thought I should just add that this is the live version that I am on about as the studio version has a vocal introduction which they never played when this song was performed live. If you can get a hold of the live at Wembley '86 CD or DVD then you will see what I mean!

Yeah, Bohemian Rhapsody is on my list.

I'll definitely get behind Bohemian Rhapsody for its creativity, although Smells Like Teen Spirit (although the opening is more "conventional") will always be one of my favorites too.

Some faves:

Don't look back into the sun - The Libertines
Banquet - Bloc Party
Baby Lemonade - Syd Barrett
Echoes - Pink Floyd
The Way It Is - Sunshine Underground
First Love - Maccabees
No One Knows - QOTSA
2 + 2 = 5 - Radiohead

Schism - Tool
Can't Stop - Red Hot Chili Peppers
Highway to Hell - AC/DC
Thunderstruck - AC/DC

-Baba O'Reily
-We Dont Get Fooled Again
-Crazy Train

Another one that comes to my mind: "Gargoyles, Angels of Darkness" by Rhapsody. 2:40 mins before any word is spoken!

Simply. Amazing.

However, the song is not as good as the intro
