Can't believe that no one has mentioned this. While technically not an intro, it is usually played that way for Pretty Woman.

Yeah, Van Halen seemed to do that. Intruder melded right into Pretty Woman, as did Eruption into You Really Got Me.
The pairs were nearly always played as a single track on the radio, at least early on around here.
Maybe Eddie wanted credit for his original material, plus an extra track listing looked good on the sleeve.

I have Gimme Shelter running around inside my head.

I always like...

Enter Sandman - Metallica
Rock You Like A Hurricane - Scorpions
In The Air Tonight - Phil Collins

They ritually play all 3 at Hurricanes games in the Orange Bowl.

Radio4 does long intros to many of their songs. Two that I like are This is Not a Test, and Party Crashers.

My favorite short intro is David Bowie's Modern Love. You can hear one or two seconds of it and you know what it is, same as with Van Halen's Jump. Bloc Party's Tulips or their Banquet, and Clapton's No Alibis are also instantly recognizable from a few seconds of the intro.

Back aways:

Bob Dylan - Freight Train Blues
The Eagles - Get Over It

Best rock song intro?

off the top of my head? The Spirit of Radio by Rush. hmmm... maybe Limelight. anything by Queen from the Jazz album or earlier. Around the World by the Chili Peppers. so many...

Eric Clapton - Layla

You know it at the start- Best? i don't know about that but it stays in your head.

Cool old thread!

Three off the top of my head:

Revolution - Beatles (the rippin' version from the single, on PMV2)
Black Magic Woman - Santana
Time - Floyd

Maybe Eddie wanted credit for his original material, plus an extra track listing looked good on the sleeve.
Pretty smart, actually. Songwriters are the only ones who get paid when a song gets radio airplay.

Best stolen song intro

I just noticed that Liz Phair borrowed the first 5 notes of her song "Firewalker" from Dream a Little Dream. I just picked random YouTube videos to illustrate the point. Compare 0:38 in the Phair video with 0:13 in the Glee video.

I read some music history pages and discovered that "Dream a Little Dream" was first recorded in 1931, so you'd think Phair would have had time to think of another sequence of notes!

Oh boy, too many to mention. I'm going to agree with YYZ by Rush. The Morse code to open the song is just cool. I also love the intro to La Villa Strangiato. Of course, I also love the intro to 2112 (duh), especially when they hit it in concert.

And having just heard this song again, I want to mention "Ace of Spades" by Motorhead. Oh yeah, and special props to the video version of "One" by Metallica. The quotes from the movie Johnny Got his Gun really add to the song.

Just Got Paid - Z Z Top
Bridge of Sighs - Robin Trower
March to the Eternal City - Triumvirat
Hunting Girl - Jethro Tull
