Hells Bells by AC/DC

Classic in every way. Unmistakable. Straight dirty.

I see that and raise you a "Pour some sugar on me" by Def Leppard.

"Rock of Ages" has a great intro too.

What do you expect, Mutt is behind all of these tunes.

Although it's just one chord the opening of A Hard Day's Night by The Beatles is hard to beat.

That dang chord has haunted me for decades. It may not be the "best" intro but it certainly is a memorable one. Kudos to the Beatles for their many signatures!

Spiral Architect - Black Sabbath
Hey Baby (Land Of The New Rising Sun) - Jimi Hendrix
Anarchy In The UK - Sex Pistols
Under The Bridge - Chili Peppers
The National Anthem - Radiohead
Gimme Shelter - Rolling Stones

After stumbling across this thread and reading through it I have had to register simply to add 'I Wanna Be Your Dog' by Iggy Pop and the Stooges

Best intro to a rock song---

"Rikki, Don't Lose that Number" Steely Dan with the Horace Silver quote.
What Horace Silver piece is quoted in this intro? I've never heard mention of this before!

This isn't the same style as most of what has already been mentioned, but its role as an introduction is superb: Funeral for a Friend/ Love Lies Bleeding

[playlistId=256673234&i=256673381]Misery Business[/playlistId] by Paramore has a surprising intro. It's a tinny low-fidelity preview of how the song really starts. The first time I played it after buying the album, I thought that was how the whole song was going to sound!

One rock intro I like isn't really an intro, it's a separate song. If you listen to the album [playlistId=257736651]The Colour and the Shape[/playlistId] by Foo Fighters with the songs in order, the short and very quiet song "Doll" precedes the hard rock of "Monkey Wrench" and makes a great lead-in. When they played Doll in concert here in Los Angeles, the crowd got excited because they knew what was coming. :)

New Wave Jacket by Polysics has an incredible intro that fuses 8 bit, acoustic drums and surf guitar. It's one of my favorites.

Fell In Love Without You by Motion City Soundtrack makes the rest of the song that much better. It's like an orchestra tuning up until the Moog comes in and blasts the rest of the song in. They also have a song called Cambridge that catches me off guard when it comes in.

As for two track intros, We're So Starving into Nine In The Afternoon on Pretty. Odd. by Panic At The Disco, and The End into Dead on The Black Parade by My Chemical Romance are very good ones. I aimed for a similar progression on my record, Core.

There's probably a bunch I'm missing, but those are the best ones off the top of my head.

Old thread but I'll chime in..

Pick one:
Money for Nothing ~ Dire Straits
Barracuda ~ Heart
Hells Bells ~ AC/DC
Let Me Put My Love Into You ~ AC/DC
Bad To the Bone ~ George Thoroughgood
One ~ Metallica
The Unforgiven ~ Metallica

Top 3 (too tough to choose):

"All Along The Watchtower" - Jimi Hendrix
"Thunderstruck" - AC/DC
"Baba O'Riley" - The Who

Welcome Home by Coheed and Cambria
Money by Pink Floyd
Time by Pink Floyd
In the Flesh? by Pink Floyd (I believe these are all seconds and thirds)
Have A Cigar by Pink Floyd
Shine On You Crazy Diamond by Pink Floyd
Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd
Deadbolt by Thrice
Girls by Beastie Boys (doesn't really qualify as rock I suppose)
Day Tripper by The Beatles

I really like the intro on Should I Stay Or Should I Go by The Clash, short but distinct.

As you can tell I kind of like Pink Floyd.

The following is Queen's best intro IMHO

http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=_LVxb2JyNUs

It goes for 1:36 before the song starts and not a second is wasted, along with some pretty good guitar work from Brian May and some creative use of distortion and backmasking.

This was one of the first records I ever bought.

I'd go for Baba O'Riley or Pinball Wizard by The Who. Both fantastic pieces of music...
