The 680 is just a 650 without an antenna IMHO.

Apparently it has significant under-the-hood improvements in the quality of voice calls.

Anyway, I'm now the proud owner of a Treo 650 and it's fantastic. I don't know why I didn't move to this from my old Palm Vx and SonyEricsson k750i before now.

The only thing it does badly is photography, but I can live with that.

A ressurection of some sort!

hey,
Just to begin, I am not a smartphone junkie, so please live with me with this one.
Its my Dads birthday on Monday, and my brother and I want to get him a new smartphone. He used to own a newton, and loved it. He always had all his contacts, calendars and a bunch of other stuff on it. But sadly the battery died or something, and it became a bit obsolete.
So as a replacement my brother and I were thinking of getting him a smartphone, but as mentioned before, I have no idea what a good phone is. He mainly wants it to sync it with iCal, and keep his to do list in order. The whole uber-messaging/e-mail thing is not needed and neither is a camera. We do not have a real price range, so all suggestions are welcome.
I have looked at the Nokia E61, Sony Ericsson M600i and the Qtek 9100. But would not know which one of these are the best.
Thanks

The SE M600i is a nice phone but it doesn't sync with isync. That means you're going to be out of luck regarding syncing up with iCal. The same problem arises with the Qtek. It runs Windows Mobile. I can't imagine you'd want to put you're dad through that kind of agony ;)
I have a Nokia E61 myself and it is brilliant. It slim, easy to use and has great functionality. There's no out of the box Isync support but a quick google search will bring up one or two free plugins and one paid one that all solve the problem perfectly. Besides that, it is highly likely that Apple will introduce support in some upcoming release of OS 10.4.
My advice is to go with the E61!

Smartphone Junkie

I have tried a bunch of different smartphones. I've owned the AudioVox 5600, Motorola Q, Treo 650, RAZR and the Blackberry 8700. I'm a sales manager with a small company so I basically ran down a list of items that I needed and after a test with all of these phones, I ended up with the crackberry.

The blackberry fit my needs nearly 100%. I agree that its a little big but know understand why the blackberry is used so often in business settings.

Here is what I needed in a "smartphone"

1. I am a Mac user. I use iCal and my address book extensively. Most of the telephones I tried either could not sync with my Mac or sould not do so reliably. The Blackberry can sync (with the USB cradle with NO problems so far 100% of the time.)

2. Email. I need to get my email from 3 different email sources. I also need to be able to open (and read) pdf attachments. The Piece of crap Treo 650 could view pdfs that we transferred from the computer but not email attachments. Again, the Blackberry with DocHawk allowed me to view the pdfs I needed. The full keyboard of the Blackberry is awesome! I thought it was a little overkill but now I can't imagine being without it.

3. The simple, intuitive blackberry interface is awesome. The only issue I have is the scroll wheel is only on the right side of the device and I'm left handed.

4. Call quality and volume is ok on the blackberry but I think the 5600 was teh best.

Overall, the blackberry is the most productive and useful device I'm found on my Mac. I'm willing to pay whatever the cost for something that works! All the MS based phones have loads of gimicks but simple stuff hardly works. Synch is a must for me as well as useful email. The one item I wish my the blackberry had was the ability to use AOL or MSN. SMS works great but I'm charged on top of the data plan.

I cant wait for Apple to release something along the lines of a blackberry smartphone.

Mmm.. I'm really wanting an E61 so I can browse like mad in bed or whererver.

Be careful you'll go blind if you carry on like that... :)

This thread is interesting just in the fact that it shows people want wildly different things in a smart phone (some even don't see syncing to their computer as a high priority).

I tend to view the smart phone as the logical replacement for the pda, which is an extension to my main computer as well as a communicating device.
I've always been a pda user but the data input is always a problem (palm, ce). I think this is why thumbboards are so popular on these devices now.

The market is wide open for something solid if you ask me. Palm were close but dropped the ball, windows mobile etc is trying to be a computer, I've read too many bad reports of symbian ...well you know the rest and we might even find out when wwdc rolls around if apple will attempt to fix the problem or sideskirt it.

Thanks everyone, you guys have been a lot of help.
Well I think I have decided on the Nokia, but my brother is still unsure. So we have decided just to let my dad decide out of the four (incl. the crackberry). Just gonna print out all the specs, and write a nice birthday message with it, than give him the option.
Thanks again to all.

I'll give you the best smartphone...

(why not?)

Why does it have a windows key?

This thread is pretty nice. I think there should be a cellphone stickie with recommendations divided by useage/needs (cameraphone, music players, smartphone etc.)

Anyway, I am also looking at getting a new smartphone/cellphone. However, I am not sure I need a full on smartphone.
My needs are:
-PIM function (contacts, calendar, notes, tasks)
-Camera- 2 mps would be nice. 3 would be REALLY nice
-sync with Windows Outlook seamlessly. ( I have a Treo 600 and fight with it daily to get it to sync. I have also had Windows Mobile that I have had fights with.)
-Music player
I have also been thinking about getting a cheap camera phone and using a Nano for music and PIM. but I don't think the Nano alerts you to upcoming appointments.

I think a Nokia 6300 would suit your needs great for low-mid end, it has a 2MP camera, music player, probably syncs with Windows Outlook (Not sure), but if you want to bump things up go for an N73, it's a mad phone, 3MP camera, monster screen for it's size, and a front facing camera for video calls. Check gsmarena.com and use the Phone Finder to find the phone of your dreams. :D
