I've decided on the Harman Kardon SoundSticks II

What will I need to hook these up to my MacBook Pro? Just the Toslink cable? Thx guys :)

everything you need should be included ... but all it will be is a 1/8" to 1/8" trs (stereo) cable, possibly built in. This doesn't have an option (that i could see) for optical / toslink.

I highly recommend Bose computer Speakers. The Companion 3's are probably my favorite. They sound great and don't take much space.

However, the price of a Companion 3 is just too high for me.

I have these speakers:

Klipsch Groove PM20

400x400.aspx

The Groove PM20 is amazingly small (not much bigger than a paperback novel book per speaker!), but the sound quality is OUTSTANDING, especially the strong and clear bass (perfect for playing back DVD movies).

the MPB's speakers are of very good quality, unless they are not loud enough for you (maybe the room is very big) i just say stick with it. Also all that 5.1 o 7.1 audio system is crap. The fact of the matter is that the more speakers you have (unless you are standing still, not moving in the "hot spot") the more interference will be (the more crappy the audio will be) thats why after all that surge for 3.1, 5.1 and last 7.1 audio system with huge bass and all the surround sound crap, we are going back to the traditional 2 speakers system. Therefore if you really need a bit more power try to get a set that has the fewest speakers, if it can be just one even better (usually they come in pairs so finding a set of 1 might be though.)
And btw for the guys that said BOSE is ****, i dont agree, they are pretty good, but not $300+ good.

Yep I have this and it rocks. My only gripe is no separate controls for bass/treble.

I stumbled upon this thread searching for speakers. I think I'm going to hone in on the Audioengine A2's...they seem to offer some great bang for the buck, plus I'm looking to downsize at my desk. I'd miss having a control pod but I can start using my volume control in OSX more if that's the case, plus it's more desk space saved as I'm aiming for a minimalist appearance.

I take it the A2's are a nice product...experiences?

Check out the Swan M200MKII, a class above the A2's and can be found for the same price:

The only caution about them is their size. They are bigger than they look in photos. The sound is outstanding, especially at this price.
